The Future of PlayStation VR2: What’s Next?

The PlayStation VR2 has hit an abrupt halt in support from Sony, but price cuts, PC VR compatibility and indie titles paint a rosier future.

I will not be buying another five hundred dollar vr headset. As I said before, the PSVR2 better be forward compatible with the PS6.

I got scammed with Vita then PSVR. I couldn’t get more satisfied over the fact i chose not to buy this thing. The tech is surely on point like vita and psvr but that lack of support is unacceptable

You missed the very best that this gen has offered to date. But you do you.

Vita is a tricky one. Great hardware and I would have loved to see more first party titles on it. I don't care for the big games from studios like Guerilla or Naughty Dog on a portable, but they really could have allowed Japan Studio and even Asobi to thrive on it. Gravity Rush was great. Vita was great for Persona 4 Golden, the MGS Collection translated very well to the hardware, and it was a great place to play classics.

Awesome potential, they just couldn't figure it out.

I appreciate Sony releasing PSVR to try something new and improving vastly on the technology in PSVR2, but Sony is easily discouraged when hardware doesn't catch on right away. I wouldn't buy PSVR2, but that's entirely because Sony won't give me enough reason to justify dropping money on it. I despise their legacy approach to slow momentum projects.

Vita is as tricky as PSVR, PSVR2 and even Move.. so much potential, a few killer apps but support dropped too soon.

"Vita is as tricky as PSVR, PSVR2 and even Move.. so much potential, a few killer apps but support dropped too soon."

Nah, I don't know about that. I think that applies to Vita as a traditional gaming device with interesting (if not a bit gimmicky) features.

Move I feel had good support, but it was provided as an option rather than a requirement. It was never needed but it did give some cool experiences when the tracking was good. Had a great time with Darkside Chronicles and Child of Eden namely.

Where I think PSVR fails is, in addition to not enough first party support, it's a peripheral. Peripherals that aren't necessary or extra controllers tend to be tough sells, historically. There's also the perception that VR is a gimmick. Unfortunately, flooding the stores with kiosks to test it isn't much of a solution since the pandemic has really conditioned people to order everything online. Support is definitely a thing, but it's a perfect storm that I wouldn't quite compare to Vita.

The original VR had passable support. Releasing one major title for PSVR2 was shameful from Sony.

Profchaos122d ago

Agree that one big game from them being horizon was shameful at least gt7 got VR support

thorstein123d ago

You know this is marked as an opinion piece and at no time did the article state that PSVR2 support has halted.

The last software update was a few months ago.

first party support is non-existent.

But its still getting games. Thats how I see it. There are games. And no other console has them.

Lexreborn2123d ago

I’ve got a collection of PSVR2 games I just haven’t been able to get around to playing due to my schedule. I even have PC vr games I just haven’t gotten to.

crazyCoconuts123d ago

There's actually quite a bit of content for it, despite the unfortunate fact that we're not getting many AAA VR games.

Kurt Russell122d ago

I just find setting it up and putting it on the barrier to entry, it's a lot easier to just pick up a controller and get stuck in.
In terms of games, there are plenty of really good PC ported VR games on the system.

Lexreborn2122d ago

I have it plugged into my Pro and that’s right next to my PC with the adapter. I just move my chair I’m ready. I just legit struggle with time to play the content.

Neonridr122d ago

@Lexreborn2 - would have been nice if you could have initialized it once per hardware (PC / PS5) and it could remember everything. Having to re-do the setup every time I want to swap back and forth is an annoying issue.

PapaBop123d ago (Edited 123d ago )

Honestly, with some of the discounts I've seen for it, it's future is likely a good value for money option into PCVR. The PS5 VR library of games is still really good but the future of it on console is iffy at best. For PCVR though, you won't find better value for money as an entry point into VR assuming you pick one up when it's on sale.

If only they spend a fraction of the money they wasted on making live services games on creating VR games instead.
