Days Gone Developer Bend Studio Job Listing Hints at New Multiplayer Project

Job listing reveals Bend Studio is hiring for a new high-budget multiplayer project after the cancellation of its last game.

Sigh...

How many times do we have to teach you this lesson old man

Eonjay249d ago

Let the studio make the game THEY want to make. As long as they have the creative freedom and as long as they aren't being forced to make something they don't want to make I am fine with that. I look at Clair 33 and I look at Helldivers 2 and one thing that stands out about both of these games is that the studios are both very passionate about their work even though it is clearly different.

I mean that was their pitch for the Days Gone sequel was a MP focused game, but ye im weary of any legacy 1st party studio doing a MP game at this point, Jim really messed this whole generation up

-Foxtrot250d ago

I mean there's been so many stories over Days Gone 2 where I don't even know if the multiplayer sequel idea could even be true.

First, it was Days Gone tanked in terms of sales to the point Sony wasn’t interested in a sequel.

Next there is there was a pitch for a sequel that would be a multiplayer and have a shared world but apparently they didn't like that within the studio.

After that it was said the game actually did sell well (according to Ross apparently) and it was the best selling game in Bends history yet Sony still wasn’t happy.

The latest story we have in the past year or so was that Bend themselves cancelled the sequel without actually pitching the idea to Sony. They never bothered.

@Foxtrot

Good lord! 🤦‍♂️ A real shame cause while i felt Days Gine was very flawed, i also thought it was an amazing foundation for a sequel. Nothing come.close to fighting the hoards on Days gone, the planning and execution for larger hoards is sa incredibly satisfying

Eh. Jim sucks, but at the end of the day, the public face of many companies only exist to justify the direction the board wants to take. They're functionally a lightning rod for all criticism. Microsoft axed Mattrick, not because I think Xbox One was his idea, but because the optics of bringing in new blood just looks better. So they dropped someone who looks more corporate and brought in an "average Joe" gamer to implement parts of the original Xbox One plan in slow motion and repackaged it.

However, when a company branch is on top of the competition, the board tends to give more flexibility to the company face, but still need to implement their vision (which is where Ryan comes in). His tweaks around the edges weren't great, but his departure in favor of a seasoned game studio head (Hulst) and financial expert (Nishino) really shows they want to be a Japanese company with appeal to the west and prioritize game quality, but with heavy financial regulations in place. Ultimately, I think the money people won out, but maybe it's in response to the tariff stuff.

I think Sony affords their heads more agency than Microsoft so we can definitely say Jim screwed things up, but again, only to a certain extent.

I mean... it'd be cool if they spearheaded the revival of TLOU's MP. *That* zombie game sounds more exciting and dynamic than whatever they'd cook up with Days Gone 2.

Deeeeznuuuts249d ago

An open world, multiplayer survival set in the days gone universe, with the hordes roaming around and a base building element would actually be decent if done right but I doubt it'd be that, I would much rather a single player sequel though.
We'll have to wait and see.

Eonjay249d ago

Right I'm thinking of State of Decay but different of course.

ravens52249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

🤞🏽 Its a single player game with a multiplayer portion..... They can't be that dumb.

__y2jb249d ago

Just what everyone doesn’t want!

S2Killinit248d ago

I want them to make it actually. If done right.

neutralgamer1992249d ago

I guess Sony can't learn anymore. This isn't the Playstation we grew up with. Shawn layden should have kept over Jim Ryan, just imagine how different things could have been when someone who knew what he was doing was in charge

Michiel1989248d ago

the writing was on the wall since ps4.
I was enthralled with them during the ps3 era but there was one thing that really stood out to me. They started to block your fortnite account on other platforms if you purchased something on it on ps, without warning. I don't play fortnite myself so I wasn't affected but it got me thinking. Then all the stuff with them actively blocking cross platform play, the timed exclusives (dlc). That wasn't what I was used to from them.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio15d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing15d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit15d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing15d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
