Well Gamepass really worked out for them. It goes to show that when you come out with a quality original title. That people will buy it through the service.

im going out of a limb here and say that xbox players, for the majority, aint into jrpg inspired roleplay turnbased games. like at all

If you read the article you would know this wasn’t the case here.

What cracks me up about those that downvoted me. They are disagreeing with the creators of the game. Because they said Gamepass was a success for them……Stupid is, is what stupid does…..just saying.

I feel a spiritual successor would be better, a lot of the mystery surrounding the world and story is what really helps gets you hooked, once you find things out at the end there’s nothing else really to reveal unless they choose a different painting or something

Then you have what ending to go off, I mean I know I have my personal pick but others might think differently. Unless they do an update in the future which unlocks a third option.

I agree the original mystery won't be the same but there's still some unknows in the real world with the Painters vs Writers. What will "writing" look like?

Man, I’ll start off by saying that expedition 33 was one of my favorite games in almost two decades. That team did a great job with almost everything I’ve wanted with a RPG.

That being said, one of my biggest fears were that they were going to over milk this title and try to make a sequel. I think it would be uncalled for.

I wanted them to take the final fantasy route and make different games with different stories, characters, and sceneries. I told myself I wouldn’t really want to buy a sequel to the game, I want to see if they really had talent on creating worlds and characters. To each his own though, I hope they do just as well, but if their next project isn’t something new I’m not interested.

gold_drake142d ago

depends if they mean a "clair obscure" sequel or expedition 33 sequel.

This was such an inspiring interview! I really enjoyed hearing Guiam Broch’s journey from Ubisoft to creating Expedition 33 and how following his creative vision led to such success. I also respect the team’s decision to stay small and focus on authenticity rather than chasing rapid growth. It’s refreshing to see developers staying true to their artistic values while delivering such a critically acclaimed game.

It'll be interesting to find out if the sequel also treads the gamepass path, or now that its a highly thought of commodity whether they'll go the more profitable route of sales only.
I believe the game sold very well outside the xbox ecosystem, will those millions of players that played through gp equate to sales for the sequel?
My guess is probably not.

Best RPG of 2025

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "If there's one genre you can almost always rely on to put out at least a few solid titles each year it's the RPG genre. Whether it's CRPGs, WRPGs, JRPGs, ARPGs, or MMORPGs, there are a lot of subgenres with rich histories and confusing abbreviations, and each of them brings something worthwhile to the table. This year in particular was a bit of an interesting one since it had no brand new entries in the really long-running, genre-defining series like Final Fantasy or SoulsBorneRing to step in and steal the show. Instead, our shortlist consists mainly of much more unique titles within the genre, but they're certainly no less deserving for that."
