Rare’s Everwild canceled amid layoffs at Xbox

Everwild was announced more than 5 years ago

LucasRuinedChildhood198d ago (Edited 198d ago )

Jesus. The amount of layoffs is terrible (stating the obvious, I suppose). People deserve some job security and much more competence from management. Sad day.

Read the comments, Certain people were hyped for this game. It's sad to have now been cancelled and layoffs happening. Hope the devs can move to somewhere else in Xbox. Keep the talent in-house,

darthv72198d ago

If Rare is on the chopping block... Nintendo would give them their room back if they decided to move back home.

andy85198d ago

That 2nd links comments are hilarious now with whats happened 😂

pwnmaster3000198d ago (Edited 198d ago )

Wow read my comment with obscure in the second link.
I guess the curse is real lol.

@lukasmain
yea I was hyped ... I liked the art style (dont see the problem here).
I had already lost faith, given how long its been in dev hell .... but still had a sliver of hope that Rare might pull a miracle ... well guess that's kaput now.
On other news, Romero's first AAA FPS in decades also got chopped due to these layoffs.

lukasmain197d ago

You and the others were right to have hope because you trusted Phil Spencer when he said the game was fine in February 2025 on an xbox podcast. Also before that when he played it at the studio. Phil keeps giving out mixed messages. At this point, how can you trust him anymore after all that has happened? Xbox management are all full of shit. You can't trust a word that comes out of their mouths

pwnmaster3000198d ago

Prayers for the people who lost their jobs and for their family also.
Hopefully they can bounce back and quickly secure a new job.

The_Hooligan197d ago

I looked at the second link from lukasmain and you are right. The curse is strong with Phil lol

ZeekQuattro198d ago

Oh boy. For a good laugh scroll down to the article related to this one. In particular the first comment. Aged to perfection. 🤣 On a more serious sucks for the devs. This situation is wild.

Relientk77198d ago

More like this situation is Everwild

Alright I'll go grab my coat and head out.

ZeekQuattro198d ago

After you said it I was like damn the joke was right there and I didnt think of it. 🤣

-Foxtrot198d ago

I kind of like how my comment aged like a fine wine.

ZeekQuattro198d ago

It certainly did. I'll give you that.

Charal198d ago (Edited 198d ago )

Very good catch, and a proof that some common sense and connecting dots always tops brainless fanboyism in the long run.

I said this a few months ago, Microsoft has displayed a historical pattern of promising games when they are extremely early in development, in order to get you to buy their hardware.

Then the game ends up canned, fake apologies are issued, damage control is performed, and they hope their fan bases forgets about it within a few weeks, only for the process to repeat over and over again. Idiot Spencer has completely ruined the Xbox brand over the past 11 years. It didn't have to be this way, yet it is this way. Shameful.

Microsoft's unending shame-parade on full display. Lost jobs, lost studios, lost games. Great job Phil. What leadership.

One of my fav art style.
Too bad they couldn't make the rest work.

Microsoft Has Become the New EA, Buying Activision and Blizzard Just to Kill Off Its Other Studios

I mean yeah it’s a shit move from MS but I wouldn’t go that far to say they are the new EA.
you got to be more shitty to take that spot

Terry_B197d ago

Have a read about how many and what type of studios /companies were bought by Microsoft and how many from them were killed.

GhostScholar197d ago

It must be sad to hate Microsoft more than you love your family.

darthv72197d ago (Edited 197d ago )

The real shitty move is the cancelation of the games... I get the laying off of the staff and closure of the studios, but the games could very easily have been shifted to others that they kept around. THAT (to me) is the real shitty move. You dont put that much time and money and energy into something to just shut it all down. you keep that shit going by handing it off to others who can deliver where the previous could not. Even if its just to save face is still a better reason than to end it all.

raWfodog197d ago

“ you keep that shit going by handing it off to others who can deliver where the previous could not.”

I don’t think they laid off 9,000 people because they could not ‘deliver’? By all accounts, they were doing the jobs they were hired for. MS/XB just doesn’t want to pay them for it anymore.

RedDevils197d ago

@pwnmaster You're right they worst.

GhostScholar197d ago

So you think the purchase was made to purposely shut down a studio? Logical……..let’s waste millions on a studio and then buy another one so we can close the other one.

Armyofdarkness197d ago

Well, thats whats happening.. Microsoft does this shit in all their ventures. Too rich, does not give a fuck. Not aligning with strategy? You are screwed. Read their history of takeovers. Identifying with a corporation is some 1984 idiocy.

GhostScholar196d ago

I’m not saying Microsoft is a paragon of virtue, but if you’ve ever owned a business you would know that you don’t spend millions on one venture in order to kill another venture you’ve also spent millions on. If anything your merge the two.

Linking to a wikipedia page that lists nothing but facts is not a form of hate in any form.

gold_drake196d ago

mh thats not what it says.

its more that they bought such a high profile studio and the aftermath was to the shut down of others.

dsammy04196d ago (Edited 196d ago )

Buying a business to acquire it's assets then sell it off to buy another business is very common in the business world. You thinking small if Microsoft losing millions ain't nothing but a write off for a multi-billion dollar company. Nothing but a acquisition or in other words hostile takeover

DarXyde196d ago

Because it was never about the studios. You think they bought Mojang for the talent that brought us Callers Bane or C&C? No, it was to get their grubby mitts on Minecraft. Same with the publishers they purchased.

It was always about the IPs. It was blatantly obvious from the beginning: since they bought Bungie because they made Halo or even bought Gears of War from Epic.

The studio purchases were a goodwill stopgap, until they could pull the trigger and replace their workforce.

Why are they doing it now? Also obvious: because gaming is a massive entertainment industry and they now own so many classic IPs that you'll give them your money one way or another. It's like boycotting Disney: you can try, but they've got a hand in so much that it might not be practical.

Xbox killed Perfect Dark and others, before they shipped a single game.Seven years. Top talent. All wasted. This isn’t “refocusing.” It’s betrayal—of fans, devs, and the future Xbox promised but never delivered.
