"Most advanced graphics ever in a mobile device" well.. probably not all that true. Maybe because of DLSS.

I have a feeling Nintendo has put themselves in an awkward spot though, I think Deck 2 could well be out by the end of next year and it will likely be a big upgrade. Nintendo has released late, very late. It reminds me of the Wii U in some sense.

Nintendo have the position of having first party games, but they need to bring them.. without long droughts, I can't see it but they should have some quality games anyway. Third party stuff I think they'll be eclipsed quickly hardware wise, especially when next gen consoles release and another new gen of GPUs.

ABizzel1354d ago

The deck and none of the other handheld PCs are a threat to Nintendo due to their abysmal market share. Combined the 3 major handheld PCs have sold less than 10 million units. From a performance standpoint the Z2 Extreme devices are more powerful than the switch offering up to 2x the performance in games, but that’s not enough to make the Switch 2 irrelevant. It’s just the difference between 30fps Switch 2 vs 60fps Z2 Extreme, but that doesn’t matter to Nintendo gamers.

Nintendo has a monopoly and more importantly Pokémon. Nintendo could not release any games the entire generation, except a mainline Pokémon and the hardware would still sell 30m units, lol.

1nsomniac354d ago

I really believe I live in some parallel universe. I’ve been gaming since the 80’s, I’ve lived through the invention of Pokémon. I’ve got a kid of my own, I’ve got nieces and nephews, Yet I’ve never met a single person even slightly interested in Pokémon. Cartoon or game… I genuinely have no idea how it appears to be so popular or why people find it interesting.

…I mean I lived through the “POG” generation and yes I collected them and they were great… but there’s only so much interest it can peak in you surely.

FinalFantasyFanatic353d ago

@1nsomniac,
That's been the opposite situation for me, Pokemon is popular with quite a few woman I've met, one ex-coworker, and one of my co-workers and his girlfriend are big Pokemon fans, I also know of another Co-worker who is also a Pokemon fan.

The more I think about it, I've actually come across quite a few of them, I lost interest at Gen 2, I've played Pokemon Violet, and that was enjoyable enough for me (even if I don't know half of the Pokemon anymore).

Michiel1989353d ago

Not sure that you understand what a monopoly is. What has nintendo monopolized exactly? Being successful and having a monopoly isn't the same thing. The thing is that their competition chooses a different market for their product and nintendo focuses mostly on a younger demographic. you're literally only comparing the power of devices. Does Ford also have a monopoly because Lamborghini doesn't sell as many cars even though they're better and faster? if you're a fan of sony games and you can get a console that plays games at 200 fps but doesn't have the games you want to play, sony 1st party games for this example, would you buy it? When you think of a nintendo fan, what do you think they care more about, having the highest end devices or playing their favorite franchises? You have absolutely 0 idea about nintendo's strengths and why they're successful because you're only talking about the raw power of a device.

Seem you rather play a game you likes less in 120 fps than a game you enjoy more in 60 fps, weird shit.

BlazedKong353d ago

They dont understand that with nin, its games vs all these other handhelds. Nin fans will buy it regardless

crazyCoconuts354d ago

Agree with @Abizzel. Somehow Nintendo transcends power via great exclusives and name recogniton. They'll do just fine again I think

Espangerish354d ago

Deck 1 had no noticeable impact on switch 1s sales, can’t see any reason why deck 2 would have any significant impact on switch 2.

UltimateOwnage353d ago

And despite that, some of us will still be primarily using the Deck from here on out and primarily buying digital games on Steam. I have a massive Switch physical library, but I personally don’t see Switch 2 even coming close to what made Switch 1 a commodity item for the average gamer especially now that devices like Deck exist, and also now that $80 Nintendo games are here and game-key card are becoming the norm. A lot has changed this time. No doubt games sell hardware, but I don’t for a minute think Switch 2 will come anywhere near Switch 1 in sales. Having said that I Love Nintendo and obviously can’t wait for Thursday to get my hands on MK World…

Neonridr353d ago

@UltimateOwnage - here you are complaining about game-key cards, but propping up a Steam Deck which is entirely digital.

how cute.

TheColbertinator354d ago

Nintendo has enough 1st party support to outlast the toughest generations. If the situation worsens, they can just buy another 3rd party studio

ThePacemaker354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

Haha, why would a successor to a device that merely sold 4 million units be a threat to a successor of 150+ million units?

Nintendo consoles are all about quality & fine gaming. SW1 sold that much despite being equivalent to PS3/360 in terms of raw power.

repsahj353d ago

And Switch 2 sales will immediately surpass the Steam deck lifetime sales upon its launch.

UltimateOwnage353d ago (Edited 353d ago )

You think Valve cares? Steam eclipses Nintendo in raw game sales and number of devices where it is the primary sales platform. Deck is one of many handhelds Steam exists on, and SteamOS is only going to broaden the market for them. Some gamers are still stuck thinking in terms of console wars. Microsoft figured this out with XBox a while ago and now we’re seeing the fruits of that same realization on every platform.

DankSinatra353d ago

@UltimateOwnage

And you think nintendo cares? They have such a massive share of the market that anything steam does will be abysmal in their eyes.

FinalFantasyFanatic353d ago

Nah, I can't see Steam pushing out another Steam Deck for a few years, I don't feel like the hardware has advanced enough yet, definitely not enough to be a huge upgrade over the Switch 2. maybe in another APU generation or two, but I think it will be longer, plus battery life is an issue as it is, the APUs need to get more efficient or batteries need to get better (or maybe Valve will find a way to shove a bigger battery in that form factor).

I strongly suspect that the Steam Deck will stick around a lot longer than people expect before we get a successor.

Who cares what this money-grubbing jackass has to say. He sucks harder than anyone else I can think of right now. What he's doing to the PC market is disgusting.

jznrpg353d ago

He’s not the worst person in the world but he definitely sucks for PC gaming prices.

UltimateOwnage353d ago (Edited 353d ago )

Gamers want double performance at any cost every few years, and he delivers. I’m not sure how that makes him the bad guy. AMD exists for budget gamers who don’t mind waiting for the future. Nvidia has no problem charging you to have it now.

Ashunderfire86353d ago (Edited 353d ago )

Yea every few year he total the darn price of his newest graphics card from $1500 for the 4000 series to $2000 for the 5000 series! It’s going to be $2500 for 6000 series no thanks!

FinalFantasyFanatic353d ago (Edited 353d ago )

I can't wait for the AI bubble to burst and see prices come down to something more sensible, I don't think this euphoria will last, and in the end, only a few worthwhile AI companies or products will be left standing. I wonder if we'll eventually see an Intel-lite situation for Nvidia in the future, where AMD finally wallops them, while Nvidia briefly stagnates.

batiti93353d ago

this guy is a fucking liar... rtx 5070 better than 4090 for 1/3 the price. He thinks people are foolish. Switch is way less powerful than Z1 extreme

Fonsecap353d ago

I don't know about 1st party games because Nintendo usually squeeze every bit of performance out of their consoles with their games, but more demanding 3rd party games,.like cyberpunk for example, will have to rely much on dlss and Frame generation tech to perform ok visually and Frame time wise.

mastershredder353d ago (Edited 353d ago )

lol I knew he would not get far without spewing ai buzzword nonsense. Get wrecked Nvidia and take your embarrassing AI shill Huang with you.

AI to beneficial gaming processes is a thing but in the wrong hands and mouth, it’s pure snake oil.

Take-Two CEO Once Again Side Steps Grand Theft Auto 6 Price Point

Strauss Zelnick says price of GTA 6 is being carefully considered and that Rockstar is focused on "making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth."

Kuma24d ago

If GTA 6 abandons everything that made GTA 5 great, it will crash and burn right out of the gate. GTA 5 was funny and not at all PC. My worry is that they will cave to the PC crowd and ruin the vibes.

Eonjay24d ago

They got freaking BBLs twerking on the top of trucks for the gram, the freaking Flordia joker, and dude running down the stree in their undies and you are worried about it being 'too PC'? The internet has runied gamers. It doesn't matter how non-PC they make the game, you will all listen to the grifters telling you not to believe your lying eyes lol.

gigoran823d ago

"Rockstar Games’ co-founder and former VP of Development Jamie King said he envisions GTA 6 as a game that’s “maybe not quite as edgy or quite as funny” as its satirical predecessors."

oh yeah, totally internet grifters spreading rumors...

blacktiger23d ago

That's part of the plan, they destroyed you but they need to destroy the shareholders? Only 1 shre holder is the true elite that don't care

1nsomniac24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Meh.., if it’s above £55 I ain’t buying it.

Rockstar are genuinely not half the company they used to be. I was a die hard GTA fan I’ve purchased every game and expansion and spin off day 1.

My opinion of GTA6 is that I can take it or leave it. Not bothered. They burnt too many bridges.

DaReapa24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

So they're actually leaving the door open for an L.A. Noire sequel? Nice!

VaNdAl23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

He should just come out and say it already it's getting stupid it's going to be a 100 bucks $200 for the special edition🤡🤡; 29315;🤣♿

Storm2323d ago

I won't be getting this game until I can get it for $70. SHoot, I could wait for it to be even lower. I don't need the game that badly as my backlog is still huge and I am enjoying playing other things.

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn226d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn225d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown25d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay25d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay25d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac25d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger25d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300025d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde25d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde25d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
