If the Switch 2 Stumbles, Nintendo Has No Plan B

The Japanese gaming giant finally revealed its latest console. The stakes have never been higher to end the boom-bust cycle that’s plagued the company for years.

since yesterday, their stock decreased by 5%, thats alot and quite unusual after a new console reveal and showcase.

Christopher421d ago

That might be more tied to tariff-a-palooza. I think, in the end, people will buy enough to start them off (already sold out in many places) and they'll readjust as they go along to keep people buying in the long run with 'sale' prices going down to what people expect now but getting those Nintendo Whales with new game titles @$80.

Cacabunga421d ago

I hope it will until they start caring for the consumer

Christopher421d ago

How dare you, Cacabunga?!? Nintendo (and Microsoft and Sony) absolutely cares about the consumer, specifically about how much money they can give Nintendo.

Profchaos421d ago

To be fair the stick market accross the board has taken a belting companies like take 2, Sony and non gaming companies saw the same dip.

6+ trillion lost since Liberation Day....

A hundred and thirty six year old company doesn't have a plan? Yeah, okay, Bloomberg.

Inverno421d ago

Did they have a plan for when they fumbled the 3DS? Nope, they lowered the price on a whim, pissed everyone off and had to give away free games to make up for it. How bout the Wii U? They basically let it die, fell back on the 3DS and pushed out the Switch. The Switch, much like many products, has a boom in sale cause of COVID, Ninty doesn't have a pandemic to sell their system this time. They're pushing their luck and this time they have no other system alongside the Switch 2 to fall back on.

Companies like Nintendo, Sony, Budweiser, Micron, Microsoft aren't just playing everything by ear. They have strategic plans that are 5,10,15, 25,50 years in advance. They know what they're doing. They know where they'll be in 2045.

To say otherwise is just naive. And the belief that they're doomed if Switch 2 fails is simply that: conjecture without evidence.

Nintendo isn't going anywhere. And their company isn't hinging everything on the sales of one console.

Michiel1989421d ago

their other consoles/handhelds must have been outliers then cause they didn't need pandemics to sell, weird.3ds turned out to be an absolutely massive success for them, you forgot to mention that part about it.

andy85421d ago

It did do well in the pandemic but it's not as if it stopped after that year. It's blown up every year since

Knushwood Butt421d ago

'their other consoles/handhelds must have been outliers then cause they didn't need pandemics to sell'.

Gamecube sold less than the first generation xbox; Microsoft's first attempt in the console market.

So when Budweiser had their recent Bud Light episode, they weren't just playing it by ear, and strategically planned it 50 years ago?

You'd be surprised what big, famous companies don't have/do.

burd_persin421d ago

If you think Nintendo hasn't fumbled badly during those 30 years, you'd be mistaken. Pretty sure before the wii was released it was a make or break sort of situation.

ZeekQuattro421d ago

Based on what data and in what world with the way the DS was selling?

burd_persin421d ago (Edited 421d ago )

@zeekquattro https://www.nintendolife.co...

There is plenty of data if you use this thing called "google." Let me know if you need more info of their missteps. I know you LOVE them, but they aren't impervious to failing...no company is.

DodoDojo420d ago

Make or break situation? Sure if you completely ignore that they have always had a really successful handheld department.

Profchaos421d ago (Edited 421d ago )

It is true their handhelds have always propped the business up when their home consoles struggle.

Merging development pipelines made things most efficient and cost effective only targeting one SKU

But there's no alternative console to fall back on now

I don't think switch 2 will flop though

theindiearmy421d ago

Plan B could easily become putting the hardware in a console form factor and sell it for cheaper than a portable device with a screen and battery. Probably wouldn't take very long to do so.

VariantAEC421d ago

Sense made: 0%
Just lowering the price is much smarter. They exited the home console space because they couldn't compete on power and where would their controller be without the Switch's unique form-factor anyway? Almost no games even use the Switch's unique controller features of which very few are exclusive to Nintendo.

NotoriousWhiz420d ago (Edited 420d ago )

Nintendo's only successful consoles were the Wii and the SNES (and maybe NES). Nintendo's handheld department has always been the big winners.

Alos88421d ago

The tariffs are going to push a price Nintendo fans will pay to one they'll be less happy with- and it won't just be them either. Nobody's getting out of this one untouched.

Muigi421d ago

Plan B is $80 games and an inevitable Gamepass tier subscription service.
