Nintendo Confirms Some Switch 2 Game Cards Will Be Download Key Only

Nintendo has confirmed that those sleek new Switch 2 game cards won’t always carry an actual game and will, instead, sometimes simply contain a key for a game download.

If they are sticking to the same 32gb cards as SW1.... I can only imagine more SW2 games will go this route of key cards because they just won't fit. SF6 is 50gb so that will be a key cards game.

At least these are still physical unlike those one time code in a box games. So people can still sell / trade.

The article states that Cyberpunk will contain a 64GB card. I wonder if it will then require an additional download too.

I wonder if they will lock these down so that you can't sell them on?

It's sort of inevitable, given that game sizes will probably expand. Additionally, the XtraRom that Nintendo uses to manufacture those cards has a substantial increase in price as capacity goes up. But then again, that type of memory is only rated for a 20 years lifespan, so I would backup any game physical or digital as soon as that becomes available.

Why the hell does Nintendo stick with cartridges?

FinalFantasyFanatic287d ago

Probably less battery drain on the Switch, so the cartridges make sense in that respect. I know the PSP had its mini discs, but the Vita went back to cartridges, I wouldn't want the same thing for the Switch, especially as a portable machine.

That’s actually a fair point I didn’t consider. Btw, love your name. FF fan, here, too!

FinalFantasyFanatic285d ago

Is it to safe to make a guess that you name is loosely based on the Red Wings from FF4?

Keep digging that grave, Nintendo

So lame. Use a bigger card or why?
