Playing The 1st killzone on my ps3 its great im surprised how good it looks on my 42" tv. This real is a great game i recommend everyone give it a go b4 killzone 2 got it for $10.

It is well documented that the first batch of PS3s had seperate GS and EE chips that ran at about $100 extra cost. The EU PS3s then got a slightly different setup where the EE was nearly completely replaced by software emulation and the GS was still present in a new combined EE-GS chip still costing a load of money. The cheaper 40GB models afterwards came without this EE-GS chip. And thats it. There is neither any valid fact backing the deviant claim that Sony 'disabled' the BC software wise, nor any substantial evidence of Sony developing a fully software driven emulator.

The whole piece is rumors and wishful thinking, but nothing with any kind of hard facts.

I have two original 60gb PS3's but I don't ever play PS2 games on it.

Only game I might plan to play is SOTC but my current copy is PAL regioned.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Not only is this move cutting costs for the PS3, but it helps ensure that the PS2 continues to sell by being needed to play PS2 games.

The people buying PS2s now are buying used games. Sony has complained about this. It is rare to see a PS2 title in the charts anymore.

The PS3 almost bankrupted Sony. They had to make the PS3 cheaper by any means. The least desired and necessary feature was BC, so they eliminated it.

here's to hoping that he is right, i sold my 60gb a little while back because i wasn't really playing it I think if it comes back out with ps2 compatibility and a slight price drop ps3 sales will come back strong.

The article makes sense, but I'm just glad I have a 80GB and most of my PS2 games I tried on my PS3 work. I don't really play them anymore, but keep em for the good memories I had of them last generation.

Buy a 60 or 80 GB launch system they are not hard to find.I was in Game stop 2 weeks ago & they had a refub 60GB PS3 for sale.

There is only 1! ps3 model made w/o ps2 compatibility and thats the 40gig u want ps2 games play ur ps2 or get a 80gig pick 1.

Ill just play my 60gig(that has touched a ps2 game like 2x and had since launch) for ps3 games and movies.

Mine can, and even tho i still got a ps2 still working, and one of the first, can pack it up now and just use ps3 :)

They could make a small fortune by selling all the big hits on the store if the allowed all PS3s to play PS2 games.

it has got something to do with cutting costs because manufacturing old hardware can cost more than making new, the emotion engine has a big chip and big chips make less money than small chips e.g.

a 90nm CPU will cost more for the customer and that because it costs more for the company that is making it. so a 65 or 45nm CPU is cheaper for both

but they should of had a good software compatiblity

Personally, i don't care about PS1 and PS2 games, they are virtually unplayable these days where they have dated so much. There is the odd game or two i'd love to play on my PS3 though...

Xbox 1 because its a little more powerful than the PS2 has faired better. Many of the games on that system are horrble to look at and play though...

And yet classics like SHENMUE seem to age rather well....

Interesting theory. Doesnt matter much to me since Ive got an older 80gb that plays them. And even though it does, I havent played a PS2 game since the day I sold my PS2, which was the day after I bought my PS3.

I never did get why Sony removed the EE chip when it's only like $10 to add. That said, I am sure glad I got one of the last 60GBs on the shelf!

nVidia created the GPU for the original XBox.
They had a falling out with M$ when they refused to passs on savings on Chip design...

One of the reasons Xbox 1 loast so much money for M$.
Strangely, nVidia were in talks with M$ to create the 360 GPU which would have been totally compatible with the orginal Xbox.

Now, talks have stanrted again with nVidia about creating the chips needed for the Xbox 720.

IF nVidia get the contract, we could see M$'s third consoel FULLLY BC with all Xbox 1 and 360 games without the need for extensive emulation...

Then you can pretty much forget about it. No reason for a cash-strapped Sony to bother with that feature at this point.

What also makes emulation purely based on SW difficult for the PS3 is the CELL. Being that is such a departure from Intel/PowerPC based processors, huge amounts of code would have to re-written just for the CELL, and thats just not a good business proposal for them right now.

One thing they could MAYBE do...let u hook up your PS2 to your PS3 via USB. You could pop the disc in the PS3 and it would use the PS2 to do the processing, allowing you to keep it out of sight if you wanted to.

Obviously that might be hard or next to impossible (or even a bit redundant) but its something that could work for some, especially if it was something a system update could enable.

why would I want to play PS2 games on my PS3 when I have 2 perfectly good PS2's @ home?.. When I'm in the mood to play God of War, I just plug up my PS2. I can understand though. I never owned and original Xbox and I have a 360, there are/were some titles on Xbox I would like to play on 360 and they aren't compatible so I can see a new PS3 owner that has never owned a PS2 (if those people even exist) want to play PS2 tiles on their PS3.

I have over 200 PS2 games and this was the first thing I tested when I bought my PS3. All games work 100%. I like reading all this bullshit postings, cause pretty much all are 100% BS.

If they were being strategic wouldnt they allow for all PS3's to be BC?

Personaly i cudnt care less about it but i know there are people who still play PS2 games but the way i see it if its able to play PS2 games, owners cud trade in there old consoles, controllers towards a new PS3?

**EDIT** Yeah i have a BC PS3 and i dont think ive ever used it apart from once when there was a lack of games (launch) to play FF7.

I wonder if I have to repurchase the games from the PSN store or if I can use the PS2 games I have on disc.
