Xbox creator claims there’s still “no killer app” for VR yet

Virtual Reality has come a long way since its humble beginnings, but Xbox co-creator Seamus Blackley suggests that a 'killer app' is needed.

Chocoburger324d ago

Regardless I've absolutely loved both Astro Bot Rescue Mission, and Resident Evil 4 Remake in VR. Fantastic experiences, what more could you ask for from a VR game?

To our point, it feels like Microsoft has decided what their audience can and can't enjoy without giving them the option. If they don't want to invest in creating a headset for Xbox they could just open up the Xbox to be playable with the Quest. This way they can let comsumers decide what it a killer app without taking a big risk on it. Just let people port their games to the Xbox. Wouldn't really cost them much to make it happen.

I'm sure you mean in a different way, but Xbox GP including MS games is absolutely playable on the Quest headset. So, in the truest sense Xbox games are available on the Quest, making it an option.

To be fair Blackley has long since left Microsoft and Xbox so it's his independent thoughts

he's also trashed the leadership of modern Xbox publicly to so I don't think he is overly biased and has stated he doesn't think pushing for power needed anymore and it's not about how much tech you have these days and has publicly praised the switch

Petebloodyonion322d ago

What does Microsoft have to do with this?

Seamus Blackley is not currently working for Microsoft. He is the CEO of Pacific Light & Hologram and the President of Innovative Leisure.

I got the platinum on Astrobot, I'd buy it again if they upgraded it to VR2, it was brilliant.

Chocoburger322d ago

I'd love to play it again on PSVR2! And of course and sequel.

1Victor322d ago

🤣 he’s expecting a anime/ manga type of VR games where you control it with your mind and can feel almost everything. 🤦🏿

Destiny1080323d ago (Edited 323d ago )

i do think battlefield would be the killer app, driving a tank / helicopter / plane / all in Vr, maybe even parachuting down to the ground day or night

Kornholic322d ago

That sounds like a great idea, until you find out how out of shape the average gamer is.

gold_drake322d ago

not to mention the motion sickness ha

lucasnooker323d ago

Half life Alyx is the killer VR app!

DazaMc322d ago

I thought this would be out on PSVR2 by now :(

lucasnooker322d ago

Do yourself a favour and get a cheap quest 2 just to experience that game! It’s a cut above any other VR title imo. It’s just in its own league!

Cockney322d ago

If it's on pcvr then it's on psvr2, sonys headset is now PC compatible

Abear21322d ago

1000 x this! I’d argue Beat Saber is even more mainstream

RaiderNation323d ago (Edited 323d ago )

See, the mistake I think they are making with VR is in thinking it should be gaming focused. I disagree! The most compelling potential with VR to me is in virtual travel, live sporting events, live concert events, etc. God, what I wouldn't give to be able to buy an NFL Sunday VR Ticket where I could sit virtually in every NFL stadium and watch the games as if I were actually there! Same with college football! How how about ringside at every major boxing or UFC event! Or WWE! Or Courtside in the NBA?

DazaMc322d ago

Time to get an Apple Vision Pro! There's a great sports demo if you head to the Apple shop.

RaiderNation322d ago

Lol I'm not paying 3,500.00 for a VR headset!

Jingsing322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

Will you still play it when they close the server down like GT6 and your headset is a paperweight, That is why I didn't invest in PSVR2.

Babadook7322d ago

How long will that take though? They just updated it with content a few days ago and it's still pretty popular. You're missing out I'd say.

Kotick Made $155 million from MS in the buyout, the little b*tch needs to stop whining. Thanks to this Microslop deal and massive industry consolidation thousands upon thousands of devs and other workers lost their livelihoods. This greedy piggie pervert needs shut up and f-off.
