In the PS5 annual download rankings, the hunting action game "Monster Hunter Wilds," which has been improved in various ways, including the new "Focus Mode" action that allows you to aim and attack and guard, took the top spot. In second place was "ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN," a cooperative survival action game based on "ELDEN RING" that has a revamped game design and allows players to face new threats together with other players. And in third place was "Ghost of Yōtei," a new open-world period drama action adventure from Sucker Punch Productions, the studio behind "Ghost of Tsushima.
I like the concepts in MH (battle huge monsters, explore cool environments, customise your character), but I feel like it is a bit convoluted. The controls can feel odd and unintuitive, the combat is slow and clunky compared to other games, and there are a lot of different systems at play that can become confusing for new players. It can also be a real grind.
I think these barriers can all be overcome with enough time, practice, and patience but many people won't invest that initial frustrating 10-20hrs it can take before things click. From what I played of the beta it felt pretty similar to Worlds so I'm not sure they have really addressed these barriers to entry. Hey hopefully I'm wrong.
I so want to like this game. The trailers and idea of hunting down monsters really appeals to me but playing the beta was a bit overwhelming and the fighting was really weird, it's hack n slash but you gotta aim like a shooter? Also took me like 20 minutes to kill the introductory monster that kept running? Maybe I'll end up watching people play this game on Twitch instead.
