Microsoft confirms ACES closure

VG247 write:
Microsoft's confirmed ACES has been shuttered as part of 1,400 immediate job cuts.

The internal studio was responsible for the Flight Simulator series.

In a statement, Kelda Rericha of Edelman, Microsoft's public relations firm, said that the decision was made within Microsoft's Internal Entertainment Business "to align our people against our highest priorities."

It's not the end for Microsoft flight simulation, however.

"We are committed to the Flight Simulator franchise which has proven to be a successful PC based game for the last 27 years," Rericha added.

"You should expect us to continue to invest in enabling great Live experiences on Windows, including flying games, but we have nothing specific to announce at this time."

The closure was rumoured overnight.

If Sony is the one that is DOOM!!!!
Then why is MS the one closing down studios?

LightningPS3PS36318d ago

360 is selling way more consoles. That's all it comes down to.

Blademask6318d ago

Because surely you havent been enjoying any high scoring exclusive games, and haven't been since 2007.

But hey, im sure in 2008 the 360 will still be cheaper than the PS3 as well, so more console sales to play!

JokesOnYou6318d ago (Edited 6318d ago )

You sony fanboys act as if "ACES" actually makes games revelant to the 360...quick, name one 360 game made by ACES?...1...2...3...boom! too late=

Hold on wait did you say "Flight Simulator" for the PC, uhm excuse me how many copies of that did games for windows sell last year? lmfao, In the business world this known as "streamlining", in other words you find projects within the company that have been either idle for a long time or are losing money without much future prospect of actually producing a profit.

PirateThom6318d ago (Edited 6318d ago )

Yeah, because the 360 is the be all, end all of gaming.

THEY MADE MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR!

Edit: As usual "sales" not the "product". Not to mention, the latest in the series, Flight Simulator X sold over 1 million copies in the US alone.

pwnsause6318d ago

they could of made games on the 360. the next Flight simulator could of been for 360 and PC if you think about it.

poindat6318d ago (Edited 6318d ago )

Actually, MSFS is not only the best civil flight simulator on the market, but it is also the best selling. As in it moves a decent amount of copies and more than likely has made a nice profit.

Try spewing that "oh it doesn't have guns, so it's sales must be abysmal" crap to the MASSIVE community the sim harbors. There are companies and people that make money solely off of producing 3rd party addons for the sim. And they make a decent amount of cash. That should tell you how well recieved MSFS is.

AND @pwnsause

No... just no. That would mean an extremely dumbed down and ultimately useless version of the sim. If you ever see MSFS on a console, remember that day as the day the series died.

JokesOnYou6318d ago

Sure they COULD have, but there were NEVER any plans to as far as the public knows, they have been strictly a hardcore PC small flight simulator team.

Here's the deal, if you think about it micro's never had a really deep set of "in house"/1st party development studio's but they have still always managed to get great games out of 1 or 2 of the ones they do have and mostly BUY/fund exclusives or pay for publishing rights to get great games on the 360 via 3rd party developers. In fact micro themselves are on record like a year ago stating that their business model will focus less on "owning" development studios and more on once again "finding" great talent and licensing them to make great games for their platform.

As I mentioned a while back before Gears2 released, although its a different business model than what we see from sony it may end up being a great business model for micro, basicly its comes down to= Overhead Costs of maintaining a dev studio vs going out a paying a 3rd party studios to make exclusive games/content for 360....ha ha aren't sony folks always swearing they paid for this blah, blah well I guess thats why they have more cash to do it and are OBVIOUSLY MORE WILLING...in the end as long as they deliver great games I don't care who makes them.

gaffyh6318d ago

Ok so what studios does MS actually have left now? Microsoft Game Studios and Rare?

PirateThom6318d ago

Microsoft Game Studios is the publisher, the developers under the brand are:

Lionhead, Rare and Turn 10.

Bathyj6318d ago

It might not be relevant to 360, but it is still one of the only M$ franchises left that people love them for.

Why dont they just sack the people who made Vista and make some games. M3 aren't going to have any studios left soon.

gaffyh6318d ago

Bubbles to you PirateThom, thanks for answering my question. Anyway, those names seem large enough for MS to keep a hold of them, hopefully.

KRUSSIDULL6317d ago

Dont be suprised if they sell or close the studios that are left Microsoft is aiming for letting others do the work they pay money for exclusives here now on.

Marquis_de_Sade6317d ago

Blademask, are you a year behind everyone else?

No Way6317d ago

*wooosshh* Another MS game studio disappears into the wind...

Chubear6318d ago

but no-oh, Sony iz teh doomed -.-

PirateThom6318d ago

Flight Simulator was Microsoft's best product.

Seriously, it was pretty much perfect.

Way to fail epically Microsoft, why not close down a studio that doesn't make good games.

LoVeRSaMa6318d ago

I could not agree more, as fun as it is to see a Giant as big as Microsoft fall, seeing my Favorite simulator go with it makes LoVeRSaMa sad.

Marquis_de_Sade6317d ago

Why don't you apply for a senior position at MS? Seeing as you know how they should run their business.

frictionini6318d ago

Mistwalker will be next since MS loves to abandon their own investment for more popular names like SE...

how slutty, both company that is MS and SE

Marquis_de_Sade6317d ago

I really hope not, so far this gen, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, while far from perfect, have been much better than anything with the SquareEnix branding.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
