PlayStation Hit With More Layoffs

Ryosuke:

Most of my team was just laid off from PlayStation. It was a dream to get to work with Sony on the platform I'd grown up playing since the PS1 and contribute to the PS5, Portal, PSVR2, PS App, and future consoles. If you know anyone who needs an engineer experienced native console UI, feel free to reach out.

When a new CEO begins his or her tenure, promoting a new wave of layoffs is never a good thing.

Hopefully all those devs affected will find another opportunity soon and land on their feet.

fr0sty344d ago

"The layoffs happened in the software department that works on previous consoles."

Sony commits to a 10 year life cycle for their consoles. With PS4 now going on 12 years old, it's no surprise to see some of those jobs being cut.

Inverno344d ago

Cause people that work on previous consoles can't possibly just work on what comes after?

Cacabunga344d ago

I will be glad the day Hulst is fired

MDTunkown343d ago

Didn’t knew ps6 was already out

Double-Edged344d ago

I agree obscure,

From a corporation to change leadership then have to fire a bunch of people from the software side is kinda not looking good.

danglyparts343d ago

It doesn't look good but it's expected. The common thing with new leadership is to restructure, which means layoffs.

Eonjay344d ago (Edited 344d ago )

More than likely this is related to PlayStaiton taking over SNSystems from Sony, which has more than likely created some redundancies in the hardware UI deparment. Still we wish everyone the best and would have rather they got a different position within the company.

rippermcrip344d ago

Uh that's basically standard procedure. High level person comes in and they make changes all across the company.

EricCirE21343d ago

You’re absolutely correct. It happens in almost every single profession on the planet. Not sure why that is surprising or isn’t a good look. It’s just the way it is.

Christopher344d ago

I'm certain he, in only one week, made this decision. You, as an obvious equal to him and running your own multi-billion dollar business, know how this works. /s

Obscure_Observer344d ago

"I'm certain he, in only one week, made this decision."

*You* can´t be certain of anything since based on your comment above it´s pretty obvious that you don´t even know who he is or what he´s being doing for YEARS!

344d ago
Christopher344d ago

So, again, decisions made in the past and not relevant to him becoming CEO, Obscure?

344d ago
Obscure_Observer343d ago

"So, again, decisions made in the past and not relevant to him becoming CEO, Obscure?"

Of course! /S

But such scenario only exists your mind where such important decisions as to fire the freaking software team can be made behind the CEO´s back.

All those people were fired because Totoki said YES!

End

Christopher343d ago

*** All those people were fired because Totoki said YES! ***

Obscure, you're the one that made it about him being 'new CEO'. I'm not saying he didn't fire people, but you're the one making it about him being the 'new' CEO. I'm surprised you're not getting this.

Obscure_Observer343d ago

"I'm surprised you're not getting this."

No. *You* don´t get it.

Sony just changed it´s chain of command yet again after multiple F*ups with it´s Live Service plans.

Future plans for Playstation under the new leadership are yet to be revealed. Will they continue with their LS push? Will they continue with their multi platform plans? Will they expand it? Will they scrap all of the former and go back to its exclusive single player roots now that MS will be releasing all of their games on Playstation?

We don´t have any information from the new CEO regarding those topics. Yet, we already knew that people got fired under his watch in his early days in the office.

It´s simple as that.

The future is grim for us tech employees

Lexreborn2343d ago

My mentor once told me, regardless what happens at the career you are currently at. The experience you get trumps everything… so after they buckle and dimed me for my growing skillset and didn’t give me the acknowledgement i deserved.

I took my expertise to the market and got a gig that paid me nearly 60% more of the last gig was paying on my salary.

Needless to say, he was right the skills stayed the money increased. We will be okay in the end

🤦🏾. Sad. On another note MGS Delta comes out 8/28/2025. Surprised the trailer isn't up yet here.

PhillyDonJawn344d ago

Damn, i gotta complete indiana Jones asap. So many games dropping back to back. Rip to any game after gta release.

XBManiac344d ago (Edited 344d ago )

And more than 200 new positions open in Sony (PlayStation)... with hundreds more in internal studios... It seems like a change of people, not a fire and close situation: https://outscal.io/company/...

mudakoshaka344d ago

I think he means that there are 200 available positions currently with Sony PlayStation department. So the people that have been laid off could be transferred. I think it is that they have to reapply for these new positions and not just being transferred.

Rockstar launches official marketplace for mods

Rockstar has launched an official marketplace for "every server and every player" to buy mods: Cfx Marketplace.

I wonder how much of this isn't just taken work of others who have modded for free.

Edit: Also, great way for R* to take popular ideas and build them into GTAVI based on demand.

fr0sty7h ago

What I see happening here is, R* is going to ban mods in GTA6 UNLESS you buy them from the marketplace and R* then gets a cut of that sale.

ActualWhiteMan10h ago

Ah, perfect timing with them taking down the Bully online fan mod. Greedy a$$ company.

Christopher7h ago

It's okay as long as they get a cut of the money.

fr0sty7h ago

Expect R* to force it on you.

Snookies121h ago

Yep, right there with you. I'll happily donate to a mod creator if it looks really cool, or if I enjoy it. But expecting payment up front? Nope, not touching it.

IanTH7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I'm not entirely sure how to read this, as it doesn't seem exactly like an exact parallel to Bethesda's paid mods shenanigans.

Rather than single player stuff, this appears to be aimed solely on Cfx Servers. From what I've gleaned, apparently Rockstar bought the Cfx mod team several years ago, coming a few years after weird contentions led them to ban a few of their members. Ultimately, the question is if they plan to keep this contained to only online/servers.

I have to guess to a degree yes. It'd be pretty hard to "force" paid mods for single player when modding files locally on your own machine, but much easier for servers they'll control. So perhaps this is their soft launch ahead of GTA6 online and they'll clamp down more tightly on non-official servers going forward? Ever since they've become a 1 or 2 property studio, I haven't really cared much for Rockstar stuff, so I'm not entirely up on everything surrounding this. Sounds like it has the potential to be problematic further down the line, but right now fairly easy to ignore...I think lol.

MrDead9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Kotick Made $155 million from MS in the buyout, the little b*tch needs to stop whining. Thanks to this Microslop deal and massive industry consolidation thousands upon thousands of devs and other workers lost their livelihoods. This greedy piggie pervert needs shut up and f-off.
