Maybe in shipped numbers but even then they would have to have stuffed the chanels to reach that. They have said they expect to shift just under 23 million by the end of march and you think that number? Please :/

As 4th Quarter 2007, which is 4.9 million units, they would have sold a total of 21.75 million consoles. It's hard to get shipment figures since Sony doesn't use shipment figures; they use "sold to customer", i.e. sales figures.

nobody uses sold to consumer numbers. They only report (in their financial reports to their stock holders not the press) consoles shipped to retailers. Sony doesn't see a dime of profit off console's sold to the consumer. They see profit off consoles sold to the retailer, just like Nintendo, just like microsoft, just like every major electronics manufacturer.

its not difficult math but the problem is that many people on here doon't want to believe it and make up excuses such as sony count sold (haha) and MS fabricates numbers/uses RROD. Even if MS 'wins' this generation against the ps3 people will always make excuses because they cannot fathom anyhting otherwise.

Games publishers are in fact making more money on the 360 by a massive margin. The problem is that every once in a while the ps3 software sales 'spike'. But this doesn't translate into a real trend, unfortunately. It is somewhat of a delusion and wishful thinking on your collective behalf.

Granted, there was a quarter where the ps3 produced more revenue than the 360 and sure enough this event was heralded by the media in numerous news stories.

The problem is, each and every time the ps3 software DOES sell well, it is MAJOR NEWS purely because it is so unexpected. But just because it comes to our attention, doesn't imply it is the natural state of ongoing affairs.

So what's the big deal if a person buys 2 or 3 of them??? Their are confirmed reports of companies buying hundreds of ps3's to use as cheap servers. Should that be considered just one purchase???

The companies buying consoles as servers aren't as large a market as the actual customers. Since the real customer market is in the billions there is more opportunity for expansion.

As for the broken units being counted as sales you don't have to count the ones repaired by the manufacture warranty. You do have to count the ones sold to retailers that furnish 3rd party warranties.

When a customer brings back a broken console, that unit is sent to a repair/repair department thrown in the trash or shipped back to the manufacture. The *new unit* that is given to the customer counts as a sale too or by the retailer.

As for the second part.

It's well known hobbyist and collectors are willing to spend above average for their entertainment etc. Gaming is a hobby. It can be very addictive. When someone buys an item they enjoy and it breaks or there's insecurity of losing it there are people willing to spend money extra for added security.

If that means buying multiple systems at before the breakdown, or after it breaks that's no big deal to them if they can afford it. I myself went through 3 PS1's and 2 PSones.. Only one of the PSones was replaced by a 3rd party warranty afterwords I gave the NEW $49 console away.

The other 3 PS1's had laser burnouts and eventually got trashed. Considering how much I used the PS1's it's obvious why they broke.

Yes, remember when the NEW PSOnes where $49 lol.. Talk about Cheap..

On the Sony side the users have less of a reason to convert to a new console then the MS side. New PS3's don't have BC, are more efficient and include bigger HDD's. No card readers, only 2 USB ports. Good reliability with $150 service fee if the unit breaks. *In this case It's probably more expensive to replace the unit then get it repaired.*

On the MS side the new units are more efficient, include more features, have a higher reliability (based on what MS has stated) and they're cheap enough to replace. *In this case it's probably cheaper to replace the unit then get it repaired.*

What more reason would someone have for replacing an older model that fails without a warranty? As a gamer, they want to stay in the game. If a unit breaks isn't it obvious they'd replace it 90% of the time? Based on your opinion those don't count as sales do they?
