This is a great reminder of how game sales have become more concentrated in a smaller number of games/series over time. In the PS1/PS2 era a game was a success if it sold a million or a few million copies. The GTA games (3/Vice City/San Andreas) were pretty big outliers in selling as much as they did during the PS2 era. So in the minds of a lot of gamers something like FF VII feels like it was as big of a PS1 game as God of War 2018 was for PS4, but in reality far fewer people bought it (though it has obviously reached additional people through remasters, etc.).

this was alwalys the case and will always be the case. with everything

What this says to me is, not many people are buying a PS to play PS exclusives. Like so many false narratives, like Xbox gamers don't buy games! It seems Playstation as a default system is a vanilla system to play call of duty, Minecraft, GTA games and a sports games.

if you look back into the PS history, it has always been the 3rd parties who sells the most games. it was just that the PS1 and PS2 were so dominant that many of those 3rd party games were exclusives. so, back during the PS1 and PS2 days, the strategy was "to sell as many consoles as possible in order to sell more 1st party exclusives" to ride on that wave. The strategy to push many 1st party exclusives to sell consoles only started with the PS3 when many of those prior 3rd party exclusives went multiplat but more accurately, it started with the PSP.

Sony saw with the PSP, which was being trounced in sales by the DS, that 3rd party exclusives are hard to come by if you're not dominating the market. So they started building more 1st party games and when the PS3 were facing difficulties in sales, they knew they had to rely on their own to differentiate the PS3 from the 360. So the strategy back then changed to "release more 1st party exclusives in order to sell more consoles".

the only manufacturer that is still consistently selling their hardware to play 1st party exclusives, is Nintendo, and that was because they gave up the armrace for power thus they can't rely on 3rd parties anymore as all multiplats play better on competing consoles. AND that's also why they are the most ominous in going after emulators and also patent trolling!

so, you're not wrong there, but not an "aha!" moment or anything. it has been this way since the last, at least, 15 years for Playstation.

@zerobalance

So... what this tells you is that Call of duty, being the absolute check writer that it is, has been outsold by Last of us, God of war, 2 Spider man games..... Saying Playstation exclusives doesn't sell is like saying call of duty doesn't sell because they have outsold some of iterations. Does that make sense to you?

For those spreading lies here about Marvel making the most out of the deal...

The rate has tiers. 9% to 18% physical and 19% to 26% digital for the first 7 mil. So even if it's 26% for all versions it's not that much. Considering all platform holders charge 30%. And just like 30% is how much Sony is getting from call of duty.

Now let's think about how much money Microsoft is making off Indiana Jones on PS5 and steam since there is a platform cut of 30% plus the disney cut...ouch. 😏

Chevalier538d ago

Plus why would Disney mess with a deal where they sit back and make a crap ton of income without lifting a finger?! Idiots think Disney will say no to money? Lol

Yes considering the IP, 19-26% isn’t really that crazy.
For context google and apple wants 30% for selling your console and PC games on a phone.

False
Proof: you are able to purchase titles within the Steam and PS Apps. You've always been able to.

The one exception is Xbox, where they both (1) have their own mobile store agenda, and (2) have remote play built into the core Xbox app, while PS Remote Play and Steam Link are separate apps.

Can someone explain me the math here. 20 million copies x $60 = $1.2 billion max (assuming every copy was sold at $60 which it possibly couldn't).

Even Gta5/RDR2 didn't generate this much revenue in their first year even though they sold much more. Something is off here with this revenue calculation.

Basically people like Boxx don't know wtf they are talking about. There was also an expensive collector edition of the game, faceplate, controllers and a special edition console. Add in new customers to Playstation buying the system to specifically play Spiderman and yeah you can bump up revenue in multiple areas. Spiderman is that popular.

It's a guy saying their games helped generate revenue...not any official revenue. He's touting revenue that wouldn't exist without the game. So ya toys and comics. This is not a sony financial report.

It took GTA 3 days. And Spider Man had a season pass as well that released all it's content a couple of months after launch.

“It took GTA 3 days. And Spider Man had a season pass as well that released all it's content a couple of months after launch “

Reminds me how many devices was gta released on and who’s fanbase bigger CoD or gta 🤦🏿.
Edit:Congrats to Sony.
Damn I missed a obscured account troll comment 😩

Amplitude538d ago (Edited 538d ago )

Spiderman didn't have a season pass in the traditional sense. It was 3 story missions included in the Deluxe edition, but with the ability to purchase them all separately as a pass. They were multi-hour stories as well - It's not like Insomniac has been constantly building on Spiderman, collecting money monthly from players in exchange for monthly content drops.

Hell, all the skins they released were free for everybody and there have been a ton of them.
Why are we comparing Spiderman to GTA5 anyway? You can pick literally any game or media release and it doesn't compare to GTA5 sales - plus, one is exclusive to Pla-... this is dumb.

Redemption-64538d ago

It's only off if you decide to exclude accessories and custom consoles/bundles. Those are all part of the revenue

538d ago
Redemption-64538d ago

@TysonDor
Sure, if that helps you sleep better at night. You might not be smart enough to know this, but most games don't get bundles or their own custom consoles. If Sony, Nintendo, and MS create a custom console of a game that ends up selling millions, that revenue is counted towards that game. Video game sales are not the only way games make money.

They are not fudging any numbers, they are counting the money they made through this game, hell I would say it's more if we include merchandise sales too, but that goes to Marvel, not Sony
