Sega considering Netflix-like game subscription service

It's another sign the industry is moving away from owning games, some fear that means gamers having to "shell out more."

Xristo390d ago

Sega is the OG of subscription gaming services. Anyone remember Sega Channel in the mid-90s?

Notellin390d ago

We had one really rich kid that lived in my town back in those days. I'll never forget the Sega Channel, it was way ahead of its time.

ZeekQuattro389d ago

Yup. My mom rented it from Suburban Cable for me because buying games for the Gameboy, SNES, Gamegear & Genesis together was a bit much. It saved her some money. It's why I laugh when I see people mention rich kid stories about the Sega Channel. My mom loved her some layaway. Nothing rich about that. 🤣

I had a mega drive and we never got Sega channel in my region I was completely blown away when I heard it existed and what it was years later.

I thing about subscriptions services is the media helped convince everyone to "cut the cord" on cable etc. They were all on board to getting everyone to sign up for loads of individual subscriptions instead. Turns out that is worse and more expense and people still don't like subscriptions. The only people who like them are people who are flush with cash and no sense and don't watch their bank balance. or it is people in the industry who get this stuff for free that pump and promote it.

Maybe the best model was the one we always had, getting out the house going into a shop and buying a game or movie you want.

As long as I have other means to access to games, I couldn’t care any less.
