Hitman Studio Will Remove All Conor McGregor Content After Court Ruling

IO Interactive writes: "In light of the recent court ruling regarding Conor McGregor, IO Interactive has made the decision to cease its collaboration with the athlete, effective immediately. We take this matter very seriously and cannot ignore its implications. Consequently, we will begin removing all content featuring Mr. McGregor from our storefronts starting today."

I don't believe in getting games retroactively changed liked this - whatever the crime of the person in it was.

Pulp Fiction's a classic. In 2008 one of the main stars, Samuel L. Jackson was arrested for disorderly conduct - this shouldn't mean that CGI should be used to replace his face and voice.

OJ Simpson was a famous American Football player and actor who starred in the classic films The Towering Inferno and Capricorn One. He was charged with the murder of his wife and her lover, but was found innocent. Although he was found liable for their deaths in a civil court. Does this mean that those old movies should be changed so he's no longer in them?

Keeping them in does not mean endorsement of their crimes - it is simply preserving the original art.

xHeavYx544d ago

Wait, you are comparing disorderly conduct with sexual assault? And you are comparing a video game that can be patched to an old movie? Buddy, you need some help.

VenomUK543d ago (Edited 543d ago )

@xHeavYx I respect your right to disagree with me but why not try and maintain some civil discourse? When you jump straight to throwing names to claim that I am psychologically deficient it's an amateur technique used to present oneself as automatically right and different opinion as wrong. This comes from a lack of inner-confidence which compels within you a need to feel that you are always right - when the wisest minds comprehend they can be wrong.

mastershredder543d ago (Edited 543d ago )

Nah dude. It's a real good way for an industry to take a stance and say something in a hard way (it should sting, and I would hope he's not too delicate to not take some of what he dishes out). Also, the gaming industry IS NOT Hollywood. A better film annlogy would have been Mcgreggor getting digitally removed from Roadhouse. It's a current film he is in, and he's not getting removed from it; i.e. different industry flow (also why this is a GREAT move from IO interactive and a huge statement that usually goes unsaid or gets burried fast in Hollywood).

Amplitude543d ago (Edited 543d ago )

Adding a "We don't support Connor McGregor and he will be removed in all future games" disclaimer would be just as beneficial as removing him.

I'm with VenomUK. Games are just as big as Hollywood movies. The budgets and revenue often exceed Hollywood. If Connor McGregor went on a killing spree, murdered women and children, then killed the president and enslaved the entire country (except myself, who he lets chill and play video games), i still wouldn't be okay with them removing content from a game I paid for. That's fundamentally messed up - and yet again, a perfect reason to buy physical media where you can access the 1.0 build. Last Guardian 60fps and Connor McGregor are disc exclusive :)

@VenomUK
Don't forget Naked Gun too, an underrated classic.

I'm with you on this one. I see it as pointless and even harmful. Not only you're changing the game to the worse (removing content), but the person you're trying to «remove» already got the fame and money from the exposure, so what's the point? Virtue signaling? It's not like he's getting paid for every in-game kill or something.

And especially doing this in Hitman games, all you do is killing him in the game, why remove him at all?! Advertise your game with «We added even more ways to kill this elusive target», so people would vent in the game instead of on social media.

Also, what happens if he'll appeal and win? Will they apologize and patch him back or what?

Another thing, this is why online-only future is awful, they can do whatever they want with YOUR copy of the game and you have no say in it. You can't even back it up to preserve the content.

OldDuffer543d ago (Edited 543d ago )

You are writing your reply as if they intend to go through the game and replace his image. If you actually read the article, you will see they are simply cutting ties and ensuring they do not use his image in their marketing, and no longer making a single assassination available which was only available for a short time anyway.
This seems to me to be a valid way of protecting your brand and company image from association with a violent, rapist?
Such an action is a very long way away from editing the star of a film out of the whole film, and I wander what possible motive you have for trying to equate the two? A company trying to protect its image is a very long way away from censorship.

No. It wasn’t a criminal trial. It was a civil case. Furthermore the authorities declined to press charges against him. The woman admitted she was coked up and drunk they all were.

This is another instance in where a woman is simply seeking money because it’s a he said she said situation. We have to believe women yes but women also lie.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp are the prime example of this. But of course here we are in 2024 where anyone at anytime can take you to court for a civil judgment where the bar is extremely low.

Maybe they should replace his face with a clown given that's what he's become

CrimsonWing69543d ago

Or do a Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out and just change his name. Done. Everyone wins.

PrecursorOrb544d ago

I hope they just put in a different fighter. I still enjoyed the mission. I mean you are killing the guy lol

isarai544d ago

Weird how supportive people are with getting pieces of their game deleted, maybe just replace him and keep the mission?

The-VG-shamman543d ago

Seriously though, what’s up with gamers nowadays, media is absolutely jeopardizing integrity. This issue would’ve never happened if the game stayed in its own universe to begin with, nobody who played the originals asked for these stupid collabs.

ocelot07544d ago

Found guilty of assaulting a woman in a hotel.

JEECE543d ago (Edited 543d ago )

This is not exactly what happened. This was a civil proceeding, not a criminal trial-the prosecutor in Ireland who reviewed these allegations declined to prosecute. He was found liable, not guilty. Hence why he has to pay money, rather than go to prison.

This is similar to what happened to OJ Simpson; he was found not guilty on criminal charges, but was found liable in a civil case based on the same factual circumstances.

Averyashimself543d ago

Oh boo fuc king hoo. Cry me a river. There's been plenty of WWE superstars that have been charged with more that haven't been removed from remakes or otherwise older games.

Best VR Game of 2025

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "With the second full year of Meta Quest 3 and PSVR2 now wrapped up, the VR market's output seems intent on making modest, assured steps to continue. It's tough to expect more given the way the winds have blown. From a continued high price point, to other devices vying for attention, some forces simply aren't in its favor. But that doesn't stop creatives from exploring its potential all the same. 2025's breadth was surprising in this respect: a new IP, a remake, a VR addition to an established franchise, and a VR-exclusive revival to a long-dormant franchise."

Does anybody else just find it creepy and weird that game developers think putting "celebrity's" in games is a good selling point?

Christopher184d ago

It works with the younger crowds.

gold_drake183d ago

they've done that for decades.

be it that they sing a song for a game or have them as characters

AuraAbjure183d ago

Is this video game Hitman World of Assassinations allowing you to play as a virtual Hitman contracted to kill the virtual form of Marshall Mathers?

Miraak82 183d ago (Edited 183d ago )

It's why I love video games , sometimes they're just meant to be fun , dumb and silly and not to always be taken seriously . I'm surprised Eminem hasn't been in more games before at least not to my knowledge . 50 Cent : Bulletproof and Blood in the Sand haha good times

The_Blue183d ago (Edited 183d ago )

A bunch of fake Slim Shadys to kill until you can find the real one.
