"We consistently evaluate our games portfolio and status of our projects to ensure we are meeting near and long-term business priorities. As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen SIE’s Studio Business, we have had to make a difficult decision relating to two of our studios – Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios."

....WTF?

pwnmaster3000581d ago (Edited 581d ago )

Lmao good job, what a waste.
Everyone wanted them to shift away from F2P now they close studios. They all cheered when Concord flopped. Celebrated and now people lose jobs. This is what y’all wanted right.
Sony this gen is a joke and running blind all thanks to the leadership of Jim.
They need to get back on course.

Idk what Neon Koi studio is.

fan_of_gaming581d ago

Neon Koi (previously known as Savage Game Studios) was making an action game for mobile

Inverno581d ago

"Y'all" is actually a whole nother group of people that love to see things fail. I'd argue most were simply pointing out it's potential to be a flop because you could see a mile off that it was gonna flop and why. SONY had years, everyone in charge had years to come to the logical conclusion of making Concord F2P but instead kept it a paid game. This game didn't fail because people weren't willing to give it a chance, it failed long before it was publicly shown. I will agree that SONY is making some bad decisions but usually when you're late to the party you go all out trying to reach what has taken others years to achieve. Id say they're paying for their push for service games but they shut everything down, fire a few thousand people and recoup their loses.

Tacoboto581d ago

Sony, in their self-described most profitable generation so far, did not need to cut the jobs.

Their decisions and their decisions alone led them here. They could have forced the studio to make a single player component. No. They could have launched as a F2P. No. They could have forced Naughty Dog to finish TLOU Factions 2 and handed this off to them for persistent support. No.

I fully expect Herman Hulst is continuing full steam ahead on the stylized Horizon multiplayer game because PS Studios has basically become Aloy & Friendz Studios since Jim left, with no lesson learned here.

-Foxtrot581d ago (Edited 581d ago )

"This is what y’all wanted right"

Hang on. Woah woah woah...

Just because people didn't care about Concord over legit reasons (it was terrible and uninspiring), does not mean we wanted people to lose their jobs. That's unfair to any constructive criticism with this game.

What do you want people to say when they get shit on a plate from this industry?

"Hey we better pretend to like this and spend our hard earned money on this crap because if we don't all those people may lose their jobs"

It's terrible what's happened to people but a bad product is a bad product. Whether Sony invested or not wouldn't have made a difference, the game would have still failed because it just wasn't a good product and I doubt the studio would have survived anyway for how long they spent on the game development wise. Sony's issue was investing so much money in a game which didn't really have anything going for it then making out it was the next best thing.

H9581d ago

Buddy just because someone worked on a game that doesn't mean we have to like it or play it, what you said right now could be said about every game will ever be made, am I obliged to pay money to secure people in their jobs?
Do you know what would keep people in their jobs more often? Making products that the consumers would actually be willing to buy!

TheKingKratos581d ago

Never trust corporate at all .... They never cared about us gamers at all

Sony is going the same shit route of Microsoft but at least Microsoft have the money to pounce

Sony only reason for survival in Xbox360 days were the exclusives now they don't have any and closing studios and relay heavily on 3rd parties and live service games.... Jim and US heads are destroying everything great about Playstation

I am so sad that Sony became a clone of MicroShit

blackblades581d ago

I mean they did say they are helping them get new jobs sooo not like they threw them to the curb like others companies

Lightning77581d ago

Neo koi was a mobile studio they bought back in 2022. They were making a triple A action game. I guess it didn't pan out.

Lots of time, resources and money lost. Sony can't afford to keep them open after Concords launch. Hopefully some key staff members get absorbed within other Sony Studios.

581d ago
8bitAssassin581d ago (Edited 581d ago )

THEY DID THAT THEMSELVES.

You don't buy Ferrari then gut it to put an Escort in it. You think spending money on future floos is what we wanted. FUCK NO!! That's not money Sony can risk. Cut this bullshit out and make good games.

Sony at least sees that lose millions in wasted production and manpower. Or cut the cancer out when found.

DarkHeroZX581d ago

Lol I do not feel for people who actively antagonize the fanbase and make products you know they don't want. At that point you deserve to lose your job.

Rynxie581d ago

Firewall studios is woke trash. No one cares if the people there lost their jobs.

S2Killinit581d ago (Edited 581d ago )

Wait, isnt this sort of how it goes in gaming? The studios that show promise grow, the ones that are out of touch close down.

Im not surprised, if people are correct that Firewalk made Concord, it shows they made big mistakes, the funding will now be diverted to the 2 new divisions Sony recently announced.

Concord wasn't even a bad game. That game had potential and with the right direction, definitely deserved a chance as a f2p game. Sony have been awful this generation, if they keep trying to push live service crap, may they continue to get stuffed with humble pie and fail miserably until they wake the ef up.

Dabigsiebowski581d ago

Concord Not even a bad game, The last jedi subverting expectations.

Bring in inclusive interesting characters. Throw out DEI crap teams like Sweet Baby Inc that forces jank.

There fixed the industry

TwoPicklesGood581d ago

Nah bud, it was horrible. The playable heroes are at the top of the list for being the worst ever lol. Gameplay was cut and paste. Nothing new brought to the genre and yet the devs were delusionall thinking they made the best thing ever. Worst of all, Sony saw this game and backed it.

-Foxtrot581d ago

Man this is f****** wild

Sony has really made a bad call with their live service plans and now they are paying the price, it's just crazy there was an article on here a few days ago which suggested they were still committed to it.

They bought Bungie, Firewalk and New Haven yet Bungie has massive issues going on, Firewalk has now shut down and New Haven's game Fairgames$ didn't look super promising or interesting with their cinematic first reveal trailer.

Meanwhile Astro Bot has done pretty well and I bet you it cost far less to make.

I hope people can see this is why Jim Ryan took "early retirement". Can you imagine if he was still there right now when he was the one who put most of this shit into play. Either Sony knew what was up or he did which made him leave early.

porkChop581d ago

I wouldn't put this one on Jim. We already know this game was Herman's baby. He called it the future of PlayStation. He's the one that pushed for the acquisition. Instead of all these people losing their jobs it should be Herman Hulst on the chopping block. Everyone but him could see this game was going to fail.

-Foxtrot581d ago

Course we can, they bought the studio in April 2023 and Jim announced his retirement 6 months later in October that he would officially leave in March 2024

This has his stink all over it just as much.

rippermcrip581d ago

@porkChop you're quoting rumors with that Hulst thing.

Jim was the one who pushed live service. Jim was the one who bought Firewalk.

Notellin581d ago

Hermen or Jim it doesn't matter it's next man up with C-Suite rats.

MDTunkown581d ago

I remember in 2018 after successfully launching Spider-Man and multiple other exclusives Sony told they will release less exclusives from now on and focus on mobile it was also around this time they announced Jim Ryan as new CEO. It was clear that Sony decided to go to wrong direction. Many people on this site back then tried to give excuses why it’s good that Sony planned to release less games in 2019 compared to 2018

"WTF?"

Yeah... Bunch of F* hypocrites!

Sony knew they were sending Firewalk to their Deaths with Concord. Especially after the backlash from the gameplay reveal. And yet, they did it anyway. They´d brutally murdered those studios.

Jade Raymond better watch her back

Another Sony F* up! Another topic where some spiteful and disgraceful people are celebrating the fact that people losing their jobs. Another topic where MrDead the "The Defender of The Working Class Citizens" is nowhere to be found.

-Foxtrot581d ago

No offence but you talk about people being disgraceful celebrating people losing their jobs but we all know the only thing you are really getting from this is a great excuse to shit on Sony.

You also cant call out users for X Y and Z when again you do it when Microsoft does something and you spin it

Hypocrites can’t call out hypocrites, it just doesn’t work

Obscure_Observer581d ago

@-Foxtrot

Spare from your act and bs excuses to try and protect Sony from this epic F* up, man.

I´m in peace with my conscience as I wasn´t celebrating no studio from no company getting shut down.

Sony doesn´t need anyone to sh!t on them, they´re doing a far better job sh!t on themselves.

-Foxtrot581d ago

@Obscure_Observer

What the actual f*** are you talking about? Look at my comments here, do you think I'm defending them in anyway.

I just can't believe it's gotten to that point with you where you literally will tell bulls*** lies in these supposed counter arguments when you get called out, making out people are as bad as you.

The majority of people here are calling Sony out and even when the game was revealed people were s****** on this game because of how bland it looked.

The difference here between me and you is I can call things out while you won't, you'll spin things if its a company you like. We've all seen what you do for Microsoft and Phil Spencer especially when Tango got shut down.

You don't care that people have lost their jobs, you are only using that to justify your fanboy comments to call out Sony because you can act like you have a good reason for it when in reality you would be calling Sony either way.

Yeah this generation of sony that is based out of California is a huge joke they need to change there burning so much cash. Next up is faregame$

Cacabunga581d ago

What’s the point of closing these if they are keeping their madness of live service going? Isn’t there someone who can reason and for that Hulst scum?

TheEroica581d ago (Edited 581d ago )

Sony produced the biggest flop in entertainment history.... Unbelievable.

Next time, Sony, hit me up! I'll produce the same thing for you and I'll do it for half the price.

So much for the F2P comeback .... but isn't this a bit too brutal? More brutal than EA or T2.
Studio's debut Big AAA game released just 2 months ago and already the whole studio is being nuked?

RaidenBlack581d ago

For Concord fans, you can still experience the universe one last time in Amazon's upcoming gaming focused Secret level series.

Plague-Doctor27581d ago

They threw $300 million plus down the drain with zero sales. There is no industry where the company wouldn't get shut down

RaidenBlack581d ago

Luke stephens : "So, two PlayStation execs greenlight a $200,000,000 project that was doomed to fail and, when it does, one of them retires and the other gets a promotion to a position where he then fires everyone who worked on it?... Got it."

Just saw this on another site.

Sony is doing the exact same developer Darwinism bullshit as Microsoft. They have the nerve to push this live service garbage that no one wants and studios die as a consequence because they are now of the opinion that if you throw enough money at it, it'll be good.

Stupid. Absolutely stupid. And now, livelihoods are ruined because this game HAD to be made.

And you want to know the worst part? They're not going to stop making live service games. They'll just find ways to cut the budget, maybe via AI.

Drop your stupid f—ing budgets, you swines. I swear to God the leadership at PlayStation is just God awful this generation.

isarai581d ago

I mean it's not EXACTLY the same, they managed and made one of the biggest flops in gaming history. MS shuts down studios even when they just delivered hits like Tango

DarXyde581d ago

Of course it isn't a one-to-one comparison, but it's still incredibly slimy.

Now to be clear, I'm a gamer. I've loved every PlayStation every generation. I like PS5, but I do believe it's easily the worst PlayStation—not necessarily a bad thing because the others have really been stellar.

But I've also been a working adult for nearly two decades, with much of my work influencing my outlook on the world. And one thing that I hold very dearly is my pro-labour bent.

If it comes out that Hulst pulls a Nadella and gives himself a bonus as people lose their livelihoods? Yeah, count me out of whatever Sony is doing going forward.

I'm very open about how anti Microsoft I am, and this was kind of the last straw that made me black them out to the point where I'm not even purchasing their word processors and other office products.

Sony may well join my blacklist. I'm far more principled than the people who blast Sony and boycott them but still give Microsoft money (and vice-versa).

Times are changing and budgets are getting outrageous. I've plenty of sympathy there, but the time has come to really figure out how to get dev costs down (not at the expense of jobs). As someone who does a lot of project management for a living, you cut costs significantly by reducing the timeline and scope. Make smaller, less resource-intensive games, contract out less, and sell games cheaper. You do that, you're now in range of people's price sensitivity and you're selling better.

It's really not that difficult. But that tangent side, it's your move, Mr. Co-CEO.

Friendlygamer581d ago

Wasn't this studio making this game before sony brought them ?

Lionsguard581d ago

That's the worst part. Sony came and saw what they were doing and were like "Oh yea, that's the stuff! Here's a blank check!".

Friendlygamer581d ago

Well that's a very different narrative no ? Instead of evil sony forcing the studio to do what they wanted they actually helped them to realize their vision, if that's true the company is at fault for its own demise

Petebloodyonion580d ago

It's unlikely that Firewalk chose to price the game at $40 when similar games are free-to-play, just as it probably wasn't Helldivers' studio's choice to require PS+ for PC players.

Lightning77581d ago

"Sony is doing the exact same developer Darwinism bullshit as Microsoft."

So it's a another companies fault for Sony's failure here?

Besides Redfall MS LS games are actually fun and with many communities. As far as I'm concerned MS has always excel in MP games since OG Xbox. It only makes sense they'll be decent in LS. It's their SP stuff they've yet to really prove.

The blame solely goes to PS here as you've pointed out.

dveio34d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing34d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9234d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit34d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing34d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9234d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Take-Two CEO Once Again Side Steps Grand Theft Auto 6 Price Point

Strauss Zelnick says price of GTA 6 is being carefully considered and that Rockstar is focused on "making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth."

If GTA 6 abandons everything that made GTA 5 great, it will crash and burn right out of the gate. GTA 5 was funny and not at all PC. My worry is that they will cave to the PC crowd and ruin the vibes.

They got freaking BBLs twerking on the top of trucks for the gram, the freaking Flordia joker, and dude running down the stree in their undies and you are worried about it being 'too PC'?
