Windows 7 vs. Mac OS X Snow Leopard: competitive origins

The tech media is working to pit Microsoft's upcoming Windows 7 release against Apple's new Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, but the two products aren't really direct competitors.

The operating system most users end up with will depend upon what hardware they choose to buy, not the specific feature details of the software that system happens to run. History reveals that the hardware decision isn't going to be based primarily upon features.

i can't wait to see the improvement in software
once all the developers go to 64-bit.

Snow Leopard is just improving on an already awesome OS.
not really adding new features.

a lot of Vista and 7 features looks quite familiar though
stuff i've seen over 5 years ago

:)

it's their artistic styles. they really need to hire some animators, and give some lives to the stonecold desktop icons. just look at the "tech" demo of vista.. it was soo cool.. but vista has none of those.. and now Window 7 is basically a Vista + touch.

Apple's Core Animation FTW

i've been mucking around with the SDK and it's a serious platform to work with.

have you ever used Disco for burning?
it friggin has animating smoke coming off the tiny window as it's burning.
and it's dynamic as well. how friggin awesome is that!

I never upgraded to 10.5, so I plan on getting 10.6 right when it comes out. I love my mac

I was a little disappointed by the article in that it was a history lesson and didn't say anything about 7 or 10.6

straight intel support and 64bit-ness makes me excited for snow leopard. they're keeping most of the stuff the same, but they're completely revamping whats under the hood + security. depending on what they do with snow leopard, i might hold off a for a while before buying it. after all, leopard is a complete beast anyways.

meepmoopmeep6338d ago (Edited 6338d ago )

yeah, they're just cleaning up the code
and making it more efficient.

i'll get Snow Leopard when i get the new 17" MBP... hehe
but it's so darn expensive... but i could use the 8GB RAM for Aperture though.

i love all the OS X features and i can see why MS wants to mimic them

Bonsai12146338d ago

haha, i wish i could get a new computer. i'm going to use this whitebook until i graduate... still runs fine though. too bad its only GMA950... :-(

meepmoopmeep6338d ago (Edited 6338d ago )

yeah, ALWAYS go here:
http://buyersguide.macrumor...

to see if you should wait for a new model
i bought my MBP like 2 months before the update.

so i'm stuck with only 2GB RAM as opposed to the upped 4GB cap.
and i'm missing full mulit-touch.

and ALWAYS buy from the Apple Student Store, you'll save up to like $250 on most hardware
and a few bucks off software.

it's freaking amazing.. i know i got the low end one but everything about the os it's so nice and smooth..

I've been using stuff like iphoto and imovie to do stuff i was never interested in.. I can say that mac osx has made a computer fun to me. It's not a hassle and annoying anymore.

My favorite part is that it boots up in 28 seconds and shuts off in 4.. now that's an efficient computer.

I was shocked watching a video today about someone saying how amazing the new taskbar is gonna be and all the cool things it does and i was like wow, osx has had that for a long time now.. I don't hate windows or anything.

I still use xp for mkv2vob cause mac doesn't have that program and for other things of course.. but to whoever has never tried osx or even hates macs without trying them.. i would suggest to even just to apple.com and just watch that 5 minute video about leopard.. you'll be surprised how cool it is and how awesomely smooth it runs..

And i'm getting my hdd for time machine i'm freaking stoked!! I'm buying snow leopard day one.. can't wait to see my baby flow even smoother. is it even possible??

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing29d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9229d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit29d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing29d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9229d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
