Cautiously optimistic about Killzone 2

Justin Kemppainen, Minnesota Games Examiner writes:

The hype machine has been cranking out an absurdity of propaganda in favor of Sony's "please-god-let-it-be-the-biggest-game-ever" game Killzone 2 because, lets face it, there have been a few disappointments in the pase, namely the first Killzone game on the PS2, which suffered from a promise that it would be a Halo-killer. They expressed different style and presentation than Microsoft's savior, but ultimately was considered not as good.

Which is sad that reviews come based upon response to hype and comparisons to different game experiences, but oh well. Killzone on the Playstation 2 provided a very entertaining experience with a good story, unworthy of the obscurity it received. Although, to be fair, the multiplayer in Killzone was not the greatest, and first person shooters are nothing these days without decent verses modes.

KZ2 will be awesome-sauce,can't wait for this must-play game.

BrianC62346348d ago

Justin doesn't sound cautiosly optimistic to me. More like he thinks Killzone will fail. It's funny to see all these people writing about how Killzone 2 is getting too much hype. I see more of that now than people hyping the game.

Simon_Brezhnev6348d ago

wait until the day killzone 2 comes out all the hate but im glad they hating on it more people will know about it and more people will buy

bmatthews6349d ago

I don't recall seeing articles about being cautious on Halo 3's hype...I don't recall anti-hype articles of GTA IV...

suddenly when a game like Killzone 2 comes along, journalists think they now need to take up the responsibility of telling people what to do?

I understand what he is saying, but for him to still question Killzone 2's gameplay then he is obviously quite silly, the BETA received brilliant impressions, taking a look at the game's reviews they have all been 90% or more....

not to mention the fact that this game has pleased multiple journalists and reviewers who have received their review copies...and this guy still wonders why there is so much hype...?

useless article.

computer6348d ago

Couldn't agree with you more bmatthews. People just need to wait and stop with the doom and gloom articles. But what can you do.. they need a way to drive traffic to their sites.

boxedup6348d ago

The more hype a game gets, the greater the expectation, and the greater the opportunity for disappointment.

On the other hand, KZ2 can use every bit of hype it can get. It isn't going to put up Halo 3 like sales figures - the PS3 doesn't have the numbers (especially in the U.S. where shooters are the most popular) and the franchise doesn't have the pedigree. Plus, we all know that Sony is not the best when it comes to marketing.

Consoldtobots6348d ago

just more proof that america has more than its fair share of morons who call themselves journalists.

Firstkn1ghT6348d ago

Big difference dude. Halo and GTA are proven AAA franchises. Killzone is not.

Sarcasm6348d ago

"Big difference dude. Halo and GTA are proven AAA franchises. Killzone is not. "

And when a franchise is "Proven" is where they start to get too comfortable. Noticed the trend? Halo 1 and 2 were awesome because the community demanded it. But the community sat back and waited for Halo 3 and what did we get? Halo 2 in sub-HD.

GTA: SA or even GTA: VC is among the most favorite GTA's of all time. Rockstar felt so comfortable to change the whole formula, and what do we get? GTA IV that is good, but not great.

So sometimes a franchise that isn't "Proven" could end up being better because it NEEDS to be. And given all the hate and BS that was entitled to the first Killzone, Guerilla Games is on a mission to prove everyone wrong. And so far, Killzone 2 is on pace to do that.

Firstkn1ghT6348d ago

Halo 3 averaged a whopping 94% and GTA4 averaged one of the highest ratings of all time with 98%. Nice fail of a comment dude!

I wish these f*ck tards would actually read up on the sh*t they spew, SONY NEVER said it was a Halo killer that was the media

Kleptic6348d ago (Edited 6348d ago )

never point blame back at the media...never...it never ends well...like you said...anyone that remembers killzone 1 when the preview embargo lifted...knows what really happened...I forget which, EGM or GI ran a cover story saying 'is this Sony's Halo-Killer?'...and we all know the rest...Sony never said any of it...it was just a first person shooter to tap into a thriving market, and arguably failed given the hype it received from the media...

take 2008 for example...GI runs a 'the king is back!!' article in January 2008, one year ago, proclaiming why the PS3 would dominate 2008...there were no quotes from Sony in there...there was no '2008 is the year of the PS3' from Sony directly, other than normal useless PR responses to media outlets asking 'what do you have planned for 08?'...just GI starting a wave of non-stop 'good news' articles around the PS3...the PS3 then goes on to outsell the 360 for 7 months that year...yet when the 360 gets a price cut and moves more units through the holidays...where do we end up...the media going 'well Sony lied again, it wasn't the year of the PS3'...summoning in an endless wave of 'the king is dead...again' articles...gaming media is the biggest joke in any entertainment industry...by far...it should never be taken seriously...

after all...the media is what comes in and says 'say no to fanboys'...then gives countless unjustified reasoning behind various reviews on nearly every game...the media enforces EVERYTHING...thats the internet...you get journalist wannabes writing about whatever is popular in order to get hits on their website...but then doubling back on what is popular and then throwing in a layer of controversy to get even more hits...as ridiculously ungrounded as the controversy may be...

the days of seeing and playing a game like killzone 2...in which in any other generation, and arguably on any other platforms...and having a wave of 'holy shat that was awesome' rush over the entire industry...are gone...now its 'wah, the first one sucked, so this can't be that good'...or 'well gears 2 looks so much better than everything, so i'm not intersted'...etc.etc.etc...

instead its now 'don't feed the fanboys'...but then post countless 'the PS3 is doomed' articles...don't feed fanboys, but write comparison articles taking complicated computer hardware architecture out of context entirely (read: brucongames now infamous comparsion of the RSX and 360 GPU, and never makes the point of the RSX being 100% designed only to complement the CPU of the PS3, not render a game almost entirely as the 360's GPU is designed to do)...don't feed the fanboys...but then write and article saying 'the hype for killzone 2 is unjustified, as its just another great shooter'?...what exactly does that mean in the first place?...whats halo 3 and Gears 2 then?...

feck the media...the future for this industry, and for us gamers...is to just let sites like N4G just list screens and vidoes of up coming games...and draw their own conclusions...then let the message boards and comments sections sort through the mess...rather than have some half-wit contradict himself with a strong opinion of why he does or does not like something...only to offer zero justification as to what formed his opinion...

thats not towards this newspaper article guy...whatever...he has bigger fish to fry...his editor was probably just like 'hey this is popular, and our ad quota is suffering...get us some hits'...

thor6348d ago

Kleptic whilst I usually agree with what you have to say, and it's usually quite intelligent and interesting, do you have to write with so many elipses? (...) When your posts are long like this one it's kind of irritating to read that's all. Full stops, commas, dashes and semi-colons never hurt anyone; at least not to my knowledge. -OW!

vlazed6348d ago

It is just his style man, no biggie. Good post Kleptic.

orakga6348d ago

I got one of those "ow that icecream is so good but my brain hurts!" headaches.

Bubbles for you.

Kleptic6348d ago

yeah I don't know why I do it. I've done it since my first informal emails years ago, no reason really. It simply makes it easier for me to re-read for some reason, because I usually make constant typing mistakes. See, this feels weird to me haha.

my problem lately is rambling. I word puke through the keyboard thinking it will be a short paragraph or something, and it ends up being an essay.

Only the gaming magazines called it the halo killer.

Thoreau6348d ago

if killzone 2 was an xbox 360 game, there would be a sh1tstorm of xbox360 fans calling the funeral director for ps3 coffin prices, but it is for the ps3. halo 3 is a game with missing mechanics. so what if you can replay a match, give me the ability to run, and have the fine aim system (holding the L1 or left button a la COD or Resistance 2) i expect to trade in my 360 for a 720 very soon after Killzone 2 is released.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX593d ago (Edited 593d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne593d ago (Edited 593d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro593d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken593d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown593d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72593d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken593d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya593d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast593d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood593d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro822d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72822d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_822d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga822d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos822d ago (Edited 822d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23822d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000822d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin822d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole822d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix822d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989822d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor822d ago (Edited 822d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

822d ago
Michiel1989822d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1127d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1127d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1126d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491126d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381126d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1126d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1126d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381126d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1126d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761126d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware7301126d ago (Edited 1126d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1126d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1126d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1126d ago (Edited 1126d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1126d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright1126d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
