The games industry is undergoing a 'generational change,' says Epic CEO Tim Sweeney

PC gamer writes, "The world of videogames is changing, and the Epic chief believes the future is social.

Yeah having unrealistic sales expectations, then firing the whole studio while the execs pad their pockets.

It's in Sweeney's best interest to have all gaas games competing and failing against Fortnite and not have single player games succeed.

Exactly. I was thinking the same thing while reading it.

Yup. They want a Ready Player One meta where they own the meta. In that world, Fortnite turns into the platform and maybe companies can sell games within that platform. Of course they would see that the future since they have Fortnite.
I think the biggest changes have been like you said companies trying to chase Fortnite and failing, and the GamePass/PS Extra effect where gamers are spending less money on new games and just waiting for them to hit the sub service.

I guess they finally found their Quake killer. I remember the days of Unreal vs Quake and while i enjoyed Unreal Tournament more than Quake 3... it was Quake that was dominating the multiplayer LAN parties and online.

Fortnite sucked when it first came out, and was nothing like it is now. it took them tweaking and making all kinds of changes to the formula to get it to this point in its success. Adding all the extra character skins is a byproduct of them fixing the game to make it a hit to even bring in all these outside character skins in the first place.

" What we're seeing is a real trend where players are gravitating toward the really big games where they can play with more of their friends."

Ummm, what? If anything, mp games are flopping the most, how out of touch do you have to be to not see the trend of games winning hearts/sales right now? Black Myth Wukong, BG3, Astrobot, Space Marine 2, Dragons Dogma 2, just for the most recent examples off the top of my head

His perspective is from the owner of Fortnite, a multiplayer game that quite literally grows year after year. With yearly revenue so high that even if we combined the revenue generated by all the SP games mentioned, it would still be on top.

pretty sure more single player AAA games than mp AAA games this year failed

If these publishers care about profits (it seems they don’t) they have to pay attention to what gamers are buying. If they keep making games they believe we as gamers need to play and support than they will realize sooner rather than later that that’s a losing proposition
