Xbox Wants More Feedback From Devs, Including Why Some Are Avoiding The Platform

We've seen a few stories this year about disgruntled developers who have struggled to bring their games to Xbox, as well as titles that have been skipping the platform, and it looks like Microsoft is taking steps to rectify this for the future.

That doesnt answer much considering many games that skip xbox do come out to switch... which is even lesser tech wise than the SS.

BlackCountryBob575d ago

True, but the switch has over 100m owners who are used to buying software so it’s worth spending the time and money getting it right. Compared to Xbox where they need to get it running the same features on 2 platforms with minimal guarantees of any returns unless it’s on Gamepass.

Hotpot575d ago

Not tech wise but cost vs profit.. Porting games to switch is harder, sure, but the sales number justified the cost. XBox series S is not only hard to port but when you do, the number is abysmal.

It's as simple as asking yourself is it worth the resources spent?

Chevalier575d ago (Edited 575d ago )

@Darth

So chase 28 million or so customers and increase your workload for TWO versions for Xbox where no one really buys games vs. a little work vs 143 million Switch users who buy games. Really tough choice right?

Seriously if you need to wonder why Xbox fails to get games then I don't know what kind of idiocy your subscribing to. But it's plain to see why Switch would ALWAYS be the better option. Because either it's Gamepass or not releasing basically. Any developer would go F no to TWO more versions for next to probably no sales.

darthv72575d ago

@all above, the first comment said Series S, I said the switch is lesser tech so games that come to it should not have a problem coming to XB and now y'all want to say that its the size of the user base or gamepass as another excuse. Keep making excuses if you want... there is no logical reason for a game that is released on one platform should not be made for others. Unless the game is 1st party... that's it. That's the only acceptable excuse. 3rd party games should be available across the board for the widest possible exposure.

BlackCountryBob575d ago

@darthv72 - I don’t think anyone is suggesting that the Series S is not superior in pure tflops and memory than the Switch, or that the Series S is unable to deliver many games. However, I think what everyone has been saying is that porting to the Xbox requires polishing and tailoring to 2 very different systems without much of a guarantee on return of investment.

Artistically there is no reason not to port to Xbox, but they are all money making enterprises and they are having to approach in that mindset and prioritise their time and financial investment on what gives least risk and most reward, which is usually some combo of PS5 / Switch / Steam.

FPS_D3TH575d ago (Edited 575d ago )

Switch is also successful in selling the same games over a year after the original release date backed by many different games sales data. So unless there’s data showing that releasing a game on a rival console a year after initial launch, then it’s likely not worth it as the issue is how much time it requires to optimize the games for series S while maintaining a parity that Microsoft imposes

Hotpot575d ago (Edited 575d ago )

Mate it’s a product, every product is just a simple question of whether your profit is bigger than the production cost. It’s as simple as they don’t make banks when porting to XB.

If you want games to come out on XB then actually buy it when it comes out, just like Switch gamers do. Except those games with exclusivity deals with competitor, the rest is all ON YOU XB gamers for not supporting them.

Mandating development for Series S and Game Pass.

Chocoburger575d ago

Even if they didn't mandate Series S, the Series X only has 25% install base, which means all devs would have no choice but to support the 75% as well, otherwise the sales would be even worse than they currently are.

Said it before multiple times, the Series S should have never existed, it screwed MS so hard in the long term, they were so short sighted if not flat out ignorant thinking that a gimp console at launch wouldn't affect the games they would eventually NOT get.

TheCaptainKuchiki575d ago (Edited 575d ago )

@Chocoburger
It depends. The PS5 and XSX are closer in terms of power than the PS5/XSS and XSX/XSS are. It means that just because of the XSS, they have to make an development effort. If there was only the XSX,they could simply port the PS5 version without taking advantage of the extra power. It would take less time and cost less. But because they also have to optimize for the XSS, it disrupts the workflow.

Lightning77575d ago

Series S yes but what's GP have to do with it?

neutralgamer1992575d ago

Xbox series s has held back this whole generation. You can’t at the same time making the strongest and the weakest console and have a parity clause

Darth

We can all argue but facts remain MS made a HUGE mistake. Now vast majority are series S owners so they can’t give up on them. It would have been just easier and straight forward to have same specs but one with disk and the other without

kayoss575d ago

Its because games dont really sell on xbox. If you look at multiplatform games that are released, the majority of the sales are from PS5 and PC. Xbox is usually sell the least of the platforms. So developers dont want to spend extra time and effort to optimize for the xbox let alone trying to optimize it for the Series S.

We know what will happen though when they actually say it.

You clearly don’t listen to feedback or Xbox wouldn’t be in the position it is today.

senorfartcushion575d ago

You? What's this chat got to do with Xbox feedback?

Einhander1972576d ago

Your console doesn't sell.
Your consumers don't buy software.
Game Pass and your purchases of major publishers makes you their rival.
No one trusts your future goals for the industry.
Series S is hard to develop for because its so weak.

Bathyj575d ago

Xbox should have called you

kayoss575d ago

They should have to avoid being in the position theyre in now. THey prioritiezed the xbox to be an entertainment hub instead of it being a gaming console. They wanted xbox to be a subscription platform with gamepass instead of a purely traditional gaming console. They didnt prioritize making worthy AAA games instead they relied on buying out other developers. Their failures is due to their poor decision making.

Pyrofire95575d ago

As far as I've seen it's largely the limited RAM that makes the S troublesome for most games. There's really just a few edge cases where the GPU is a real sticking point, otherwise games generally just have to turn down the rez and RT, RAM permitting. CPU being the same in both S and X.

Knightofelemia576d ago

Maybe Microsoft should have a pow wow sit and think where they see Xbox in the future. How to fix the problems Xbox is having. And asking themselves. Why are some games avoiding us? Why are we dead last in sales? Why did we create the Series S? How can we make enticing, exciting, fun exclusives? Even if they did receive the feedback Microsoft won't listen. And if they did say listen to the feedback the do the opposite of what the fans are saying. Fans have been screaming since XB1 days did Microsoft listen no. Fans got a few tiny little drops of exclusives when compared to the amount PS4 was getting. I just don't see the point in Xbox myself there are no exciting exclusives. I am glad I sold my Series X. Like literally what is the point of owning an Xbox? Most of the games are coming out to the Switch or the PS5.

rakentaja575d ago

PS5 doesn't make sense because most of the games can be played with Game Pass for $5/month vs. 70€/game on Playstation. Yes, Sony's first party games are full price on Steam, but really the only logical option is PC and Switch. Only Playstation seems to be the worst choice of them all.

575d ago
kayoss575d ago

Most of what games can be played on GamePass? I dont see the Last of us 2, God of War, stellar blade, Wu Kong, etc... What AAA games are you referring to? Gamepass is the reason why developers dont want to make games for the Xbox. They end up losing money. Just like how 3rd games that are exclusive to a console, it wont sell as well.

Extermin8or3_574d ago

You missed the part where ps plus extra has a better library pretty consistently of Sony first party titles and third party AAA titles a year or so old. Also ps plus streaming is of a higher quality than x cloud abd generally more reliable, embarrassingly given it runs on Amazon web services and Microsoft literally own Azure which xbl runs on.

Reaper22_575d ago

Lol..this is an ignorant post. You have no idea what you're taking about.

Pyrofire95575d ago

S was made for a time where they saw how expensive the hobby was getting and supply lines were stressed.
Seeing as S is a good percentage of Series sales, it wasn't a bad call, it's also helped keep optimization a little more in line. However I still pose that the RAM should not have been smaller than the X.

jznrpg575d ago

It’s doing a great job. So great they are on pace to lose to the Xbox one.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio22h ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing20h ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9220h ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit20h ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing20h ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9218h ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
