Microsoft really got their consumers by the balls..360 owners have to buy a second, and third, console because it keep on crapping out on them! 28 million sold world wide but how many got the RROD or the error?? I know a lot of 360 fanboys who keep on purchasing the system and wasting their money and i feel bad since that money can be use for more important stuff in their life..

I got this about 2 months ago.

It cost me $100 and Mircrosoft had to replace my Xbox. And, when I asked what the problem was, the rep refused to tell me what exactly went wrong.

I've received 2 rrod, one disk gouging unit and countless lost hours and frustration with their tech support (to this day they can't help me to network my computer into my 360 or figure out why my brand new Sanyo Z700 projector does 1080p no problem off my PS3 but goes all blu-screen on me when I switch my 360 to 1080p.)

I have yet to receive this error. Woohoo?

This is another reason why I don't trust my Xbox 360. Imagine having a big library of games just to have your Xbox die on you. I buy only exclusive games in my 360, and anything else on my PS3. I have 13(soon to be 14, K2) PS3 games and 3 Xbox 360 games

We've seen this E 74 error happen even before the Xbox 360 was released. It happened at some press event.

I was going to say hopefully it's something that can easily be fixed in the update, but from the sounds of it I don't think that can happen. Hope this isn't a big problem since it wont be covered on the 3year warranty.

You know, I'm a bit of a Sony Fanyboy, I've had one since the PS1. I never bought an Xbox, but I really do want to get a 360. I'm a gamer, and to me it makes sense to be able to play all of the games I think I would like. Sony does everything I want in a console, but I still want a 360. This stuff is honestly what has kept me from getting one. It probably wouldn't be just the news articles that would keep me from getting one, but EVERYONE I know who has a 360 has had to send it in. I really wish they would fix the problems...there are some really good games I wanna play.

Again, nothing new. This error is not really any different than the RROD, just not as prevalent. It's been going on since way before the NXE and there isn't anyone update, game or whatever that is causing it.

Hey I've actually had this error twice now, on two different systems. So far I've owned 4 different xbox 360's and 3 out of 4 have failed. The first was the RROD, the second and third E74, and I just bought the arcade just so I can play my games and not be bored while my elite gets sent back to me. I got E74 on both the original and elite versions. My suggestion is to stay away from the 360 unless you can get one of the newer ones or save money and purchase a PS3

I remember when I was younger when the Xbox 360 launched. I tought this was the red ring of death because it is the first error I saw on a defect unit. It happened in a Wal-mart when I wanted to test the new machine.

I'm done with 360. It's been a poor design from the get-go. From the fit and finish to the overall design, it's just so cheap! Do they recruit engineers from GM and Chrysler?

Everyone, do yourself a favour with that $100 repair, contribute it to a fully functional, very well thought-out PS3. I did and I'll never look back. The system is made with top notch engineering and quality, the differences are huge...Reliability is not something you should gamble with...MS will never learn if you don't take action now! It won't get better with future consoles if we tolerate this nonsense, take action and stop supporting!

E-74 is a loose scaler chip and/or the GPU has failed. My launch system failed august of last lear with this error. I fixed it by heating the board with a towel. It worked fine for a week and a half. Then failed again. I fixed it one more time by buying a litE60.

I had this occur to me recently. I would be playing a game and the picture would freeze (sometimes just the sound would disappear). It started happening more often until all that would happen is when I would turn my 360 on I would only get the logo and nothing else.
After contacting Microsoft support I was advised to perform maintenance on my new 120g hard drive, now, that hard drive doesn't work at all. I put my old 20g in and everything works fine, haven't had the issue since, so personally, I think this problem is caused by a corrupted hard drive. Has anybody who does not have a hard drive been affected by this error?

wow really? The media is just now catching onto this problem? My launch 360 bit the dust due to this problem OVER A YEAR AGO. No RROD. I didn't get this E 74 Error BS but it did exactly what it describes. My video crapped out, hardware failure.

This is an old and common problem. I dunno if it still is happening to newer models tho. But I had to pay 100 bucks to get it fixed. I didn't. I ended up getting a new 360 for free tho when I purchased a TV. But this problem is so old I'm amazed this is the first time I'm reading an article about it.

check out that forum post on the xbox forums. The post was in November of 2007. That is around the time mine crapped out as well. 52 pages of people with this exact problem.

Be nice if this problem got more attention so I could get my old 360 fixed for free. Doubt MS would admit to another hardware problem tho even if it doesn't seem to effect their sales.

my brother keeps having a problem with his 360 and we cant figure it out.

it splits the screen horizontally and shows the dash board on both screens. and its the full dashboard on top and bottom of the split

Theres an Xbox at Harvey Norman, 2 out of 3 times I see it, its got a 65 error. When I saw the headline I thought this might be that.

Also, you might have heard me menion in the last couple days I got RRoD again, but rebooted and it as gone. Still no reoccurrance, knock on wood.

Microsoft as reliable as ever I see O well still love my launch 360.

My friend got the same problem with a launch console.
We connected the X360 (NO HD installed) to a PC monitor with a VGA cable and after 5 min.we got the E74 error.
The problem is...he used that PC monitor and VGA cable for years and no problems (exept 1 RROD)
My friend can't use the internet so the new dashbord update was not installed.
After his first RROD he bought another X360 and the first one returned to his box.(after he was repared by Microsoft)
We reconnected his first X360 after 6 months and we get this E74 error in 5 minutes?????with no Harddrive and no NXE software with the same VGA cable he used for 2 years??????

Had this error last Spring. I've had my system for 2 1/2 years and this is the only error message I've had. Would rather have had RROD though. At least they would have fixed that free of charge.

ouldn't it be funny if Microsoft some how found a new way to have the RROD error come up? Instead of getting the RROD though you get this error. And since it isn't the RROD error it isn't covered by the extended warranty. Pretty smart Microsoft. This could save them a billion dollars.

it has nothing to do with the update. this is caused by a little chip called the ANA or "HANNA" chip. the e74 happens when the soldering that holds this chip, gets loose. and voila lol. i repair e74 xbox 360s as well. this has been around for a year now

you don know sony give free replacements the same week you can tell how cheaply made the xbox is if you have 2 basically the xbox is just a fail machine yes sony do have the odd problems ie blur ray drive dead and YLOD but you get free replacements and the new consoles they are giving back to you last much much longer because mine broke got a new one back two days later been working quietly for a year and still going strong

Everyone acts like Sony has never had problems with its hardware. The mighty PS2 had a huge disc read error problem, and they would never have acknowledged it if it wasn't for a class action lawsuit.

i never had the 3 red rings but i got this e74 error one month after purchasing my x360 (2 years ago) after it was repaired i never had another problem thank god. but i tought this error was rare.

nothing new here E74 is the code that your 360 is over heating and may Red Ring soon.

I received this error message during the 360's first year out. This really isn't this new.

... with a launch machine. Repair was totaly free. After only 1 week I got a new 360 + 1 month free gold live. So this error seems to be covered by the 3 year warranty too.

I bought Fallout 3 a week after it came out, and within a week of playing it I got this error. Im not saying it was because of the game, Im just using it as a date reference. I started having several problems while playing the game early on and it eventually led up to this problem.

I had the RRoD. Reason being I had my Elite in a new multi-media tower that had no ventilation for my Reciever, HD-DVR, PS3 & Elite. When the RRoD appeared, my 360 was hot as a firecracker. Even my PS3 did the same thing. So I just moved it for more ventilation. Ever since then, no problems at all. I keep my 360 on the lowest level on my TV stand, where cool air is mostly in your home. With the Intercooler EX, no problems whatsoever.

I really do feel bad for 360 owners first the rrod now this e 74 crap tsk tsk tsk..

the E74 error has be there, it just wasnt as wide spread!! I got 2 360's an both suffered the E74 error!! the bad part about it is its not covered under the 3 year warranty so I had to pay for the repair one 1 system, the other system was still new so they fixed it under the original warranty!! I have never had the 3RROD, but I have had 2 E 74's

I can tell you this. Mine E-74'd on me 2 weeks before NXE, so I don't think that's the cause. I noticed right before it died there was all these black lines on my screen and when I asked the rep he told me it was a graphics card failure.

yea this happened to my first console, you can tell by all the graphical glitches or oddities when gaming. Take a chill pill man and wait for the reapair. That's what I'm doing right now after getting the RROD with the 2nd replaced new 360, (which I got from support surprising the hell out of me lol).

i bought my xbox 360 at launch and died from the dreaded RROD late December. It took 2 weeks to get it back and it has been fine ever since. I hope that it does not have anymore issues. the three year warranty is almost up.

I got the E74 error in August of 2007 while playing the Call of Duty 4 Beta, I bought an Elite since that Xbox 360 was a launch day console.

I hope Microsoft learned from their mistakes and fixes these issues before releasing the next Xbox.

Man if my XBOX gets this code off to the trash it goes, I want to enjoy gaming. I don't enjoy waiting for Microsoft to fix my console. I hope that when the 720 comes out either Microsoft kisses alot of ass for the faliure rate on the 360 or they make the 720 an actual reliable console. If Jasper gets the RROD or this E74 alot of people will begin to turn their backs on Microsoft a person can replace and ship a system away before it gets boring thats when people start getting pist.

Typically happens to the serious gamer. I slept outside BestBuy on launch day and have since gone through 6, I do not kid, 6 360s. Of course I have the 2-year replacement plan so i simply take it back and exchange it. The cause for the errors is USING THE SYSTEM. Dont get me wrong, I love XBOX. But I can rack up 12 hours straight usage on the weekends and that is just for COD and Gears. If you play for an hour every other day, this unit will last you years. If you game, about 3-6 months.

3 years later and we still doing the dance. My launch got it, but after a reset it went away. Never fails, get Gold card for Christmas and NOW my 360 wants to sh!t on me. Wouldn't be the first time...

This article has no point. This error I had more that year ago, nothing to do with NXE. It's still RROD and nothing more. I think it was graphics failure, when I played CoD4 there was some graphic artifacts on screen and then xbox died...

Yes. I got this error at the same time I received RROD. This was back around May, '07. I did a chip reflow, which helped with the RROD for about a month or two- but one day while playing PGR3, I got the E74 error, white lines across the screen and all. Then the RROD came back and eventually my 360 bricked. Went through three 360's. Finally, I just said Fck it, and bought a PS3. PS3 was what I really wanted anyway, but I didn't have the patience to wait for it- and got screwed by MS. If the 360 were made by another company besides the MS, they would not be in business anymore for releasing such a defective POS. But the almighty MS and all its money gets away with this horrible transgression on the consumer market to be forgiven with a slap on the wrist, and instead of people rightfully perceiving it to be the defective POS that it is, it gets a cheap price tag and record sales. Well, beware suckers, you get what you pay for.

They should be made to shut down the 360 and start again from ground up. They can afford it. Why is the US government protecting the company and not the consumer?

I ove my 360, it has an amazing constrol pad, online service, and many many great games. Bu I cannot ignore this fact. Xbox 360 hardware sucks. And M$ are not doing ENOUGH about it!

A three year warranty on RRoD isn't enough!

What about Infra red issues i've had that M$ wouldn't cover!?

It's sad that a system with so many great games has to constantly die due to tech problems that should've been tended to before its 2005 launch.

i got my 360 just before christmas because it was a bargain at £80. since then i've had simalar things happen twice (remember this 360 is only 1 month old about now). I get a green and purple screen where i can sort of make out the origanal picture but it's just green and purple and made up of green squares that resemble low bit display properties. it happened in forza 2 yesterday and the thing i did notice was all the speed dials etc were still colored correctly it was just all the 3d in the game, and when it first happened i was playing GOW2 and the entire screen did the green and purple thing. because it was all 3d i'm guessing. i have to reboot my machine and unplug and replug my memory card otherwise the machine won't detect my profile at all.

Personally I've had no problems with my heavily used "falcon" and got the NXE when launched.

However, if this turns out to be true, M$ are really risking losing to the PS3. It would also show the incompetence of the hardware team - I mean - the console is over 3 years old; how could they NOT have ironed out hardware problems yet?!?

I reserve opinion until this becomes headline news like the rrod was as I find it hard to believe that a huge company like M$ could be so idiotic.

but i can't help thinking that it must have created lots of work for IT guys in the repair centers, There must be a whole industry built up around this failed machine.

I was blind when I bought my Xbox 360,pre-owned as well.Six moons into the next gen gameing and my beloved system gets the RROD,which OK I could live with because I did buy it second hand plus Microsoft at least where extending the warranty to address the issue.It was back and fixed with in a week,so thumbs up for that one.But the more I open my eyes and read,all I am reading is problem after problem with this,when working fantastic console unit.The games are fantastic for this console and truth be known for me and I guess many others this is the only reason I chose to put up with the constant fail after failure of the dam console,because believe you me if Sony had the game quantity and exclusives that Microsoft does,then I am afraid to say this I would play off side and join the Sony team any day.This is only my opion and I hope the future does get brighter for Microsoft and the less problems it and we the consumers are getting.

No wonder the 360 is the cheapest system on the market, unless you have extended warrenty your screwed. I know there are alot of people who buy the system send it away to Microsoft and instead of waiting for it to comeback they just buy a new one. My system is getting fixed but i was tempted to buy a new one but i am not going to. Why should Microsoft get more of my money for something that is not reliable so now I sit waiting for the rumor to be true of Left 4 Dead to come to the PS3. The 360 is like a pair of shoes you buy them wear them get maybe half a year out of them throw them away if they have a hole and buy a new pair. The cycle repeats the only way i would buy another 360 is a year from now when the reviews of Jasper are released.

As a consumer i find it disturbing as to why the hardware issues plaguing the 360 cease to exist. As much as i want to own a 360 for its good selection of games i am still waiting for that certain "unit" that will end all these issues. I will never pay for anything that has a high percentage of failure with my hard earned money because i teach my child the value of spending wisely.

Well I had this problem happen to me about 5 months ago. I called MS and they fixed it free of charge, so I don't know what the people who had to pay are talking about. There is usually more to a story then people let on, like how many previous times had you sent in your box? A friend of mine also had a similiar problem with his PS3, sent it in and it was repaired free of charge. How about everyone chills out and stops creating a false crisis.

Does MS cover this? cause if they don't...
