Do HD Graphics Really Matter?

Loot Ninja writes:

"The current generation of consoles has been on the market for a few years, but looking back at sales data and Neilson ratings for 2008, I began to wonder how much graphics really matter to the average gamer. You have to consider the fact that today's average gamer is not the hardcore guy playing the latest games all day long. The hardcore, which all of us here are certainly a part of, is very much a minority in the grand scheme of things. And the average or casual gamer isn't looking for bleeding edge graphics."

Not reall.I have a ps3 but i play my game on wide screen T.V that is not HD. and my games still look sick.I know HD will make it look better but im happy with what i have, i think its gonna take something really special to make people buy HD T.V quicker, almost every one i know dose not have a HD T.V. and they still enjoy there games.

coolcole936353d ago

That makes no sense. If it will make it look better, which you admit, how does it not matter? :S

gamesmaster6353d ago (Edited 6353d ago )

."I know HD will make it look better but im happy with what i have" there you go he said it already, yes i'd like a gold plated toilet with raw silk bog roll but i'm hapy with what i have so it doesn't matter.

although i couldn't live without my tv XD

SaiyanFury6353d ago (Edited 6353d ago )

Core gamers a minority? Yeah right. We're the ones who keep a system alive by consistently buying new games for a console and keeping it alive. As for HD graphics, do they matter? Of course not, but do they enhance the gameplay immersion factor? Sure they do. If I was given the option of HD over SD, I'd take HD every time. I don't NEED a game to look great, but HD presentation makes me appreciate the game even more. To further that point, it also makes me appreciate the effort that the developer put into it.

Once I switched to HD ($200 1080p Acer monitor with HDMI port) I can NEVER go back..I tried doing it the other day and I was honestly disgusted...HONESTLY. I tried to play Wipeout HD and Motorstorm PR on a SD tv..and I couldnt take it...

"Going from 480 to 720P matters, going from 720P to 1080P just isn't that big of a deal. Sure, it makes a noticable difference, just not to the point where it's worth the trade off. The difference between 720P and 1080P is seriously overrated imo"

The thing is most of the people that buy consoles couldnt care less about complex HD games. The "numbers dont lie". If this was the case the HD consoles would be selling much more.

I also like how u wrote "720 to 1080" doesnt matter to you much lol But i bet if say the ps3 only had 1080p games and the 360 only ran at 720p (or vice versa), that would be like you ammunition towards the opposite console.

SaiyanFury6352d ago (Edited 6352d ago )

Mini Mario, you're right to a point; the jump from standard definition (480i) to HD (720p) does seem more drastic than going from 720p to 1080p. This seems more dramatic of a change because you're going from a decidedly low, blurry resolution to a resolution that's about double that of SD. If you're trying to view 1080p on an HDTV or a monitor that's smaller than 42", then you're not really getting the full experience. 1080p is a resolution that needs a larger screen to really be appreciated. I'll break it down below in terms of screen pixels. i=interlaced, p=progessive scan. Interlacing is the lines of resolution that alternate rapidly therefore you're only seeing half the true resolution at any given time. Progressive scan is where you have no alternating lines, hence you're seeing EVERY line at the same time.

Standard Definition (Regular CRT TV) - 640x480i
Enhanced Definition (Nintendo Wii with Widescreen) - 640x480p
Standard HD - 1280x720p - 1920x1080i
Full HD - 1920x1080p

As you can see, the jump in pixels from 720p to 1080p is quite dramatic. The difference is that 720p, as I said above is more appreciated on a screen smaller than 42". I have a 61" HDTV that can display 1080p and believe me, it's better than you think. Keep an open mind and do some research before writing off 1080p. Try watching The Dark Knight on Blu-ray on a 50" screen before you make up your mind. :)

they dont REALLY matter, there are other aspects of a game too...but, its undeniable that if you see wipeout HD in action that it wouldnt be as good if it wasn't 1080p 60fps.

WANNA GET HIGH6353d ago

Yes i know it will look better but wiv out HD it still looks good so that is why i say i dont really need it.

dragunrising6353d ago

I was recently playing Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii and have to say that even setting the resolution to 480 p makes a huge difference. Games don't have to be HD to be enjoyable, however the extra resolution adds to the immersion.

I agree, Wipeout HD looks amazinging in 1080 p.

nycredude6352d ago

Your tv may be good enough now but once you go hd there is no going back. You should get a new hd tv for Killzone 2! If any game is worth getting one then it's Killzone 2!!!!

Mini Mario6352d ago

i wonder what mario 3's specs were hmmm or chrono trigger

you know what...who cares! lol HD wasnt around then and yet they still made pretty darn good games that are still played to this day.

Its funny how these "resolutions" are so important. Did u care when u owned a ps2 or xbox.....seriously.

CBaoth6352d ago (Edited 6352d ago )

I guess you never heard of S-Video inputs or didn't realize component cables existed before the HD era? Sure to get my usual fix, the PC of yesterday was the best possible way. But that's not the question you posed. I guess Nintendo must think gamers care or else I'd be stuck using AV cables (80's technology) w/o the 480p HD setting enabled in the options. I guess then I shouldn't tell you about shrinking the picture of my HDTV to 4:3 letterbox mode to get the most out of the Wii's fuzzy resolution. And did you notice how I never EVEN mentioned the numbers 720 or 1080?

EDIT: For the record, I own all 3 consoles. I can critique each system based on their strengths and weaknesses. I no longer fight the good fight w/ the fanboys, I just give bubbles to those who carry on. I like all 3 systems so there must be something wrong w/ me!

but it needs to come with good gameplay as well

lokiroo4206353d ago

bad games need even better graphics.

Mini Mario6352d ago

"bad games need even better graphics."

No bad games need better devolpment as a whole. Not just in one area.

iiprotocolii6353d ago

Graphics are getting tighter and tighter. Usually, the best way to look at high-res textures and so forth is through HD. It's not important, but it sure as hell can enhance gameplay experience.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle44d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree50d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai49d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
