DivX 'not happy' with Microsoft

TechRadar has just got back from a meeting with Jérôme Vashist-Rota, founder and VP creative, brand and community of DivX, where we were given an overview of the company's new hi-def iterations of its codec – DivX 7.

The new technology means that you can use DivX to encode your HD files, which can be played on DivX-certified players, and also those devices that use third-party DivX compatibility.

Currently, when it comes to DivX on consoles, it is just Sony who has signed up for the official codec compliance for the PlayStation 3.

TechRadar asked if DivX can see other console manufacturers teaming up with the company in the future, and Rota was quick to respond with regards to the Xbox 360: "When it comes to DivX branding, we have had a hard time with Microsoft. Obviously we would love for some sort of partnership to happen.

I thought the 360 has official DivX support?

Fox016373d ago

I still don't know why you need to be "online" to play DivX movies on the 360. And most movies don't even work!
The PS3 on the other hand has real DivX support, it's even written on the back of the box and you don't need to have an internet connection to play DivX movies, which is retarded by the way.

Kushan6373d ago

It has support, but it's not official.

Also, who said you need to be "Online" to watch a DivX film? You don't, you just need to download the CODEC. That's like complaining about needing to be online to download an update for the PS3, of course you need to be online to download it, but once it's downloaded, it's capable of playing it off-line, easy peasy.

As for the non-working films, that's not quite accurate films. If I recall correctly, the support Microsoft has is from DivX version 4 onwards (Obviously version 7 wont be supported yet, or maybe not at all), which is a few years old, but films encoded before that wont work (Version 3 and under). Most films will be 4 or above, so when you say "most don't work", really you mean "a few really old ones don't work". As far as I'm aware, any XviD version will work fine, but I'm not certain on that one.

The PS3, however, DOES have "official" support, so it should play literally anything the DivX player will play. Not sure how the licensing works for later versions of DivX, but I think the PS3 already plays the stuff DivX7 encodes anyway (H.264 and Matroska/MKV files).

As far as upgrade details go, the PS3 is DivX-certified, meaning not only is playback guaranteed to function properly, but game developers can also use the compression format for in-game cutscenes In comparison, the Xbox 360 merely supports playback of DivX-encoded videos [DivX]

First of all, unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 is DivX certified. While Microsoft’s console can only playback some DivX files, the PS3 will get full DivX functionality. This includes the ability for game developers to use the very efficient compression format for in-game cut-scenes.

This means DivX video cut scenes will reduce stress on the machine, theoretically allowing for better load times, less power consumption, and less heat output.

M$ wants complete control over what goes on with the 360. Sony, who want the PS3 to be the most comprehensive HD experience, gladly worked with DivX, no big surprise there. I love streaming anime from my PC to my PS3 and watching it painlessly. According to DivX, trying to work with Microsoft is anything BUT painless.

me too,but anyway if the 360 doesn't have this codec .MS needs to GET HER DONE .i watch all the other codecs on my 360 i don't see no reason to not have this one also ..pulse ITS HD BABY!!

Kushan6373d ago (Edited 6373d ago )

EDIT: Hmm, must have pressed the wrong button. Whoops!

sinncross6373d ago

Oh well I just hope that the next firmware update for the PS3 adds full div.x and avi support.

also, the addition of it for the PSP would be a killer move from Sony!

kharma456373d ago

If the PSP had it it'd be pretty sweet. It's always been rumoured, so hopefully it'll come sometime.

Kushan6373d ago

I don't think the PSP would be capable of playing back HD videos (it'd be pointless, anyway) but it'd definitely be cool to have it play DivX stuff!

What about hacked PSPs, surely there's a homebrew port of VLC or something?

sinncross6373d ago

who the hell would disagree with me for wanting avi support on the PSP... and full support for the PS3?

Israfel6373d ago

It's cheap and touch screen, WITH Divx support.

That plus my PS3, make life that much more enjoyable.

kharma456373d ago

My N82 plays DivX too in fullscreen ;)

vdesai6373d ago

I would say the disagrees came because avis are already fully supported because all an AVI does is contain an audio and video stream into one file. This is a really bad comparison but its like a zip file with and audio file and a video file in it. Now if you meant you wanted full support for all the possible types of video contained within the AVI then it would be more accurate. Audio streams are already supported since majority are just MP3, AAC or AC3(Dolby Audio).

HDaphiles already realized WMV HD (VC-1) is the better codec for higher bit rates. These guys are complaining that Microsoft is adding more support for video formats (I assume they are commenting on Netflix which is also using VC-1), Microsoft has in house codecs that they will obviously support, how could DivX not see that?

Ju6373d ago

They are complaining, that MS is bypassing them by quote:

"Currently, Microsoft does support DivX, which is fantastic, but the company has brought in some third-party support for the Xbox 360, and we are not very happy with that."

The keyword here is "third party". They either use some free portion of DivX or a gpl code or whatever just to bypass them. Funny that this is MS doing this :) LOL.

Bladestar6373d ago (Edited 6373d ago )

Of course they want Microsoft to implement their product... that's their bread and butter... their business depends on these sort of partnerships.

The xbox 360 is primarily a game console and second it provide services like Netflix, and a ton of movies and shows from companies that Microsoft established hard to get partnerships. Microsoft needs to protect those partnerships and ensure that wherever functionality they add do not screw some of those partnerships who were willing to work with them.

Take Sony for example, made the PS3 Primarily a blu-ray player and a linux server... well.. why do you thin they are on 3rd? and as far as game developers are concern the software attach rate is the worst of all.. hurting their game developer partners...

What's going to be next? Allow the xbox 360 to play all PC games... so xbox 360 game developer are not able to sell their games?

Microsoft also needs to care for their revenue streams...and enabling certain features may hurt some side of their business or partners business.

There will be not much of a business if companies run their business that way...

Also as Elven6 commented in the Gamer's Zone... Microsoft have their own Codec which works great... Codecs like WMV HD (VC-1) and technologies like Silverlight... why the hell would they pay royalties for some functionality they already have?

With someone who exhibits some level of intelligence, you really do not do yourself any justice with ridiculous statements like this. You comment had some good points, but you just have to push it to be so ignorant. Do yourself a favor and go outside and get laid.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle64d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
