The Inquirer: Windows 7 is enough to kill Linux on the desktop

The Inquirer writes: "For the past three years I have been a Linux fan-boy using Ubuntu most of the time and Windows XP when I needed to play games or run CS desktop lay out stuff.

In a bid to focus my bile on something other than Apple for a bit I decided to play with the new Windows 7 beta. I was disappointed. It was pretty good and, if I am right, could result in the move away from Voleware to Linux and OSX being stopped in in its tracks.

Anyway I installed the 64 bit version of Windows 7 on my Phenom 9350e, quad core based machine with 2GB of very fast RAM."

Someone explain to me what Windows 7 does better than XP to justify me spending 200-400 bucks (AUD) to "upgrade"? To me it just looks shiny and costs more, thats it.

If a hosipal or office has 100+ computers why should they upgrade?

Cartesian3D6340d ago

we need somthing FASTER (and using less sources of PC) and having new significant Features(not just more colorful)

Windows Xp is perfect for gaming,CAD and other OS are perfect for Internet,Office,Graphic and other tools.

the only reason that microsoft can force people to spend money on their sh!t product(not that sh!t this time :P ) is exclusive content like DirectX10 (or 11 this time?)

ppisatosspot6340d ago

agreed the only thing in windows 7 worth getting is DX 10-11, but even then it doesnt warrent the $200-400 (AUD) pricetag.

If i wanted to i can mod my version windows xp with the interface of windows 7. Oooooo Shiny my preeeessssioussss!

jib6340d ago

might not be worth the upgrade for some but for those getting a new/building a new computer, you might as well get a new & better OS

me_p6340d ago

no need to upgrade and in anycase you can download beta, install it on a seperate partition and give it a go

Kushan6340d ago

Give the beta a go and see for yourself.
XP may be faster on an older machine, one that was sort of built with XP in mind. You know, single-core CPU, about 1Gb of RAM, maybe internal graphics (or even a decent graphics card, like a 6800 or whatever), but in reality, no PC for the last few years has been built like this, it's all multi-core, multi-GB stuff and W7 can take advantage of that in ways XP can't.
For example, during startup, XP (And even Vista) literally loads every system file in order, one at a time. That's fine, it works well and on a single-core machine, it's not going to be any slower. But Windows 7 uses threads to load multiple files at the same time, hence why it can start up so fast, but you'll only get that benefit on a dual-core (or better) machine.
That's just one example, you'd really need to read up on it a lot to understand that it's quite a different core to XP, designed for a different kind of system, but I can tell you with complete honesty that my Quad-core, 4Gb machine (with a Geforce 9800GTX) DEFINITELY runs Windows 7 faster than XP on nearly all fronts.
Plus, it's just damn user friendly, to give an example, when I installed Windows 7, it found literally ALL my drivers for me through Windows update, from my Xonar D2 sound card to my Logitech USB webcam. Windows XP didn't even find my network cards.

i cant believe an article from the inquirer got approved lol. does anyone know how terrible and non credible their so called "insider information" is?

evrfighter6339d ago

I understand your point about inquirer having no credibility. Except this article is based on his own experience and not information from a source.

In this regard it doesn't matter if the inquirer has no source cred.

darkequitus6340d ago

If you are scum that is. Are you scum? M$ might be able to handle people stealing their software. but smaller companies cannot. Theft is theft defined by law, not by c@cks with flaky - when is suits them as long long as they steal from me - morals

jerethdagryphon6340d ago

yea.... why pay or a piece of software thats just asa good as something you can have for free...

no thanks ill keep xp and duel boot the penguin

Viper76340d ago

You cant really kill linux, the users of Linux are far more loyal to their operating system (for a reason) and there are plenty of ppl with older hardware who dont care about any new games on their pc and they just want to do their random word processing, internet browising, news reading and plenty of office work.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing30d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit30d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing30d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
