Japan Sales Charts: Astro Bot Barely Registers at Retail, PS5 Numbers Plummet After Price Hike

Astro BottomThe latest Japanese hardware and software charts are in, and they don't make for particularly positive reading if you're sitting on the Sony side of the fence. To start with, Astro Bot has entered in second place, but with just under 12,700 copies sold at retail, that's hardly worth bragging about. It's an incredibly low debut for a first-party PlayStation release. Here's hoping that digital sales are a lot more robust, because the spectacular platformer deserves all the success it can get.

What’s wrong with people? Astro Bot is amazing.

Lightning77490d ago

Angry rant incoming.

Because gamers these days are stupid that's why. They wanna complain about LS BS yet dont wanna support fun creative games such as these. They wanna play their boring Fortnite, Apex, roblox, Cod, Sports, Sports crap. Or whatever other LS shit there is. It's not us core gamers it's casuals who don't know better or they don't anything at all. If it's not a neon, shiny, goofy pastel cell shaded dumb lookin characters in arena world they don't care. They dont know real games.

My bad Mario Kirby etc sell because it's Nintendo who milks those Ip's for nearly 40 years now. A new Mario game look! Rush out and buy it quick! We've never seen a plumber and a pink walking ball before!

I swear this is the only real studio that can bring me my Sly and Jak games back. Media Molecule is the next and closest studio that can bring back those ips but they're working on a new IP right now. Tbh I don't really have all that much faith in them as it stands right now until I see what their game is.

If This game doesn't do as well sales wise then gamers failed us because it's there freakin fault.

Rant over.

Nooderus490d ago

These numbers are coming out of Japan, where the most hard copies sold of ps5 games are
Ff16, gt7, ff7r, spiderman 2, Hogwarts, horizon, armored core, etc.
Where is the " neon, shiny, goofy pastel cell shaded dumb lookin characters in arena world" in that?

Aggesan490d ago

My guess would rather be not enough marketing is the reason behind lacklustre sales. People buy plenty of games that are not live service, but in most cases those games are backed up by a robust marketing campaign.

EazyC490d ago

You're conflating people who post online (who are generally far more into games than the average consumer)

Crows90490d ago

No.
It's because the majority of gamers are casuals and unless a game becomes main stream trendy it will get ignored a lot.

The hardcore's are paying for it but that's about it.

darthv72490d ago

do digital sales count????

Cacabunga490d ago (Edited 490d ago )

Sly and Jak are great series but your rant against Mario Kirby doesn’t hold.
If Mario is still seeking to this day after 40 years it’s because they keep making it better and they do not give it up.

Sony could have done the same with Jak Sly but it takes too much genius to keep delivering after this longevity. Just see Ratchet. Still coming out but still the exact same game mechanics over and over.

OT: I like the fact PS5 sales going down after price increase. Sony being arrogant and greedy. We want switch 2, and fast !

DivineHand125489d ago

It's unfortunate. I noticed a few guys on my friend's list that are active gamers but haven't even booted up Astro's Playroom even though they had the console since 2021.

Agent75489d ago

Or the fact that games are £70, which converts to $90.

@Agent75
'Games suck because in another nation's currency it's more expensive!'

Great argument there...

Weird they say ps5 numbers plummet after price hike , kinda obvious considering before the price hike they sold out everywhere .......are these people being dumb ?

Juancho51490d ago

Seems like a troll article, but whatever, the game is a GEM and i hope more people try it.

rob-GP489d ago

Exactly what I just said. Even on Amazon they've fully sold out unless you buy from a third party.

Sometimes you wonder if Push Square is full of idiots or people who just simply don't like Sony

Jingsing490d ago

Nothing really, However Sony's direction and the PS5 Pro announcement sucked a lot of air out the room. When you hurt consumer confidence in your platform it makes people hold off.

Agent75489d ago

We must all be wondering how much the PS6 will cost. £700 for a PS5 Pro in the UK, which converts to $900.

VariantAEC488d ago

@Agent75
Again with this 'but but but it's expensive when converted to another nations currency' argument. What is this nonsense. When I buy a game I know some will have to pay more for it in another nation. That doesn't turn me into a price warrior activist. What is your problem?

Moegooner490d ago (Edited 490d ago )

There was a limited physical stock and it even sold out on Amazon. Blame Sony not the gamers.

Pushsquare writers are incapable of critical thinking or researching facts, so no one should take them seriously any way.

repsahj490d ago

Nothing is wrong with me, I bought one. ^_^

EazyC490d ago

I would guess that it might be because people now associate Astro with freeware.

derek490d ago

@Jin, the games are provided on the platform it's then up to the consumer to make the decision. I bought the game, it's a fantastic game but these types of platformers are just not that popular with gamers outside of Nintendo platforms unfortunately. Hopefully it sells exceedingly well the Europe and the North America.

ChasterMies490d ago

Keep this in mind the next time this forum is overrun with people decrying Sony’s investment in games as a service. If ya’ll want single player games, you have to buy them.

porkChop489d ago

To be fair, I haven't seen much marketing for Astro Bot. If Sony wants people to buy the game they should do more marketing than just a launch trailer. The game is now getting a lot of word of mouth online though so hopefully that helps.

Flewid638490d ago

Sony hasn't really been a "Japanese" brand in a while. By the PS3 era most of the operations, thinking & decision making moved to EU and the rest of the West. A lot of the easter eggs and appeal in that game is lost on that market.

After PS2, that region has been mainly ruled by Ninty.

neutralgamer1992490d ago

Give it time in the rest of the world hopefully it does better. Japanese market is really different compared to the west. If Astro bot does poorly than we know Sony will push GAAS even harder

repsahj490d ago

From the start of the game, I was impressed by their implementation of the DS controller. I hope all games use DS features that well.

victorMaje490d ago

Truly! Playroom was 1 of the best implementation of the DS out there & Astro Bot now is even better.
Amazingly fun game!

CobraKai490d ago

My family and i love this game. I love the purity of it. It’s just a game. Nothing more and nothing less. Games like this are the very reason some of us got into gaming in the first place

Lionsguard490d ago

There's a reason why Sony moved their headquarters out of Japan. Japan is really just Nintendo's domain + gacha games. They never really had the same feelings for Playstation that the rest of the world had but Sony is quickly burning through that good will.

fsfsxii490d ago

Japan is just gacha/MTX infested games, and shoddily made nintendo games. Its a dead market with no prospective growth outlook, anyone with a basic MBA would relocate their HQ.

Lionsguard490d ago

Well I'd hardly call gacha games a "dead market" considering they make extreme ROIs. Sony wishes they had their own Genshin Impact but with the leadership they have in place, Sony attempting a Genshin clone would just be full of DEI monstrosities and then blaming players for not pulling for any of their characters. However, Japan is a mobile market first and foremost. If they can't game on the go, it'll be a hard sell.

Agent75489d ago

Nintendo can't compete when it comes to new/original games. Most of what they do is the same or recycled, yet their Switch game still warrant in £50 ($65) price tag. Every Nintendo Direct is the same old. 2D Mario, Mario Party etc. How many times has Mario rescued Princess Peach?!

90sGamingWasBetter490d ago

It's a great game, my Japanese brothers and sisters don't realise what they're missing lol.

DivineHand12555d ago

There are some deals to be had here, where there are a few games that are at a historically low price, but overall, it could be better.

For example, it is Black Friday, yet not all Sony titles are on sale, only a few of them.

Spiderman 2 is cheaper on PSN than on Steam, but this is an outlier.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is on Steam for $23.99, yet on PSN it is $69.99.
Helldivers 2 on Steam is going for $31.99 vs PSN at $39.99
Horizon Zero Dawn remastered and Forbidden West complete edition are also cheaper on Steam
Both God of War games are on sale on Steam, while on PSN the price is firm.

When looking for the 2024 game of the year nominees, only Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Metaphor: ReFantazio are on sale on all digital stores.

PSN is looking better as the 2025 game of the year nominees are mostly on sale. Hollow Knight: Silksong is not on sale, but that is understandable, as the game was priced low to begin with.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach are all on sale. I am adding Split Fiction, as this game probably should have received a nomination given the universal praise it received at the start of the year.

In terms of deals offered on Black Friday, this is the weakest offering I have seen in a long time. I miss the PS4 Black Friday Sales.

The games you listed that aren’t currently on sale have been on sale many times and given on PS Plus. Not everything goes on sale at the same time. They had a PS Studio sale like a couple weeks ago.

PlayStation Portal: Best PS5 Games to Play with Cloud Gaming Right Now

Our list of the best PS5 games to play with cloud gaming on PlayStation Portal. From Astro Bot to Ghost of Yōtei.

I have been using the portal to play robocop, the plucky squire, Spider-man 2 and GoW Ragnarok. I know many were initially turned off on the idea of streaming games... but people really need to give it a fair chance now. Its way better than when it first launched. Stadia was onto something, But Google is not Sony (or MS) and so they had to take the fall so that the other services could rise.

Neonridr70d ago

I'm willing to wager most people who own a Portal also own a PS5. I'm curious to know how the device performs when solely streaming vs using it via Remote Play.

I guess I understand the benefits if you are away from your house, but at home I don't see why you wouldn't still want to just use remote play.

darthv7270d ago (Edited 70d ago )

remote play is handy if the game you want to stream is on your 5, and not already in the cloud service. I found that certain games may say they are streamable, but only if they are actually still in the service. Case in point... I saw that in my list of games in my library was Jedi Fallen Order. I wanted to give that a whirl but it said it was no longer available. I looked on my 5 and sure enough its still there and so I can play that using remote play, but not cloud direct play. I think its because it was a game I claimed from PS+, and it has since been removed. So it is not 'officially' in the cloud streaming list even though it shows as one I could stream from my library.

So I use the actual cloud streaming side for games I do not have installed on my 5. And it works great in my home. I have not tried it from another location, so I dont know how well internet access is outside of my home network. I get ridiculed for saying this but I use the cloud streaming services of both XB and PS as a way to guage interest in fully installing or even purchasing games. Its easier to load up the game via the cloud because you dont have to sit there and commit time to download/install.

If I like what I'm playing... I will do the full commitment and even purchase. If people dont look at this as trying to replace, but instead as a means to compliment the systems... they might find it benefits them more to use these services as a taste test / try before you buy sort of thing. I dont know why that always seems to ruffle people on here when I express how i use them, but it does.

Neonridr70d ago

@darthv72 - that's fair, thanks for the response.

The_Hooligan70d ago

I mainly play JRPGs or similar games on the portal. Currently remote playing DQ3 and it's great. I did play Spider-Man and FF7 intergrade, just to see how it feels when I first bought the portal and it played just fine. But to me, those games are better enjoyed with bigger screens. So games like DQ3 and Unicorn overlord, to me are better suited for portal because you don't need those quick responses from the controller and they are not graphics heavy that you need TV/monitor.

I did play Ghost of Yotei streaming on Portal today and again it played great. No input lag or anything but again a beautiful game like that to me is better enjoyed on a bigger screen.

Hypertension14070d ago (Edited 70d ago )

@darthv72

You're right about streaming. Once you have the proper hardware setup, it works really well.

I've already completed over 10 games on my portal and currently playing through silent hill, Its just really expensive and not everyone has access to super fast internet.

Abear2170d ago

I’ve been playing Dave the Diver and Deliver at all Costs and these are the best types of games to play on it imo. Stardew Valley is warm on the back burner, cannot wait to try Lumines on 11/11.
