What killed Vista will make Windows 7 fly

Ars Technica writes, "I'm one of those users who has been using Vista with no problems ever since Microsoft gave out RTM copies to beta testers. However, as a writer, I've watched the media completely destroy the public opinion of Vista, leading many to stick with Windows XP or to look for alternatives, even before they had tried Vista. Even with SP1 out, many have not bothered trying Vista on recent hardware and therefore could not realize the fact that it really is worthy of being XP's successor. If I had to lay the blame on one party for Vista's poor public opinion, I wouldn't lay it on Microsoft, I wouldn't lay it on hardware companies incapable of producing good drivers, I wouldn't lay it on the fact that XP is so good, I would lay it on the media for blowing things out of proportions.

Yes, the problem is exaggeration (it's in this article's title too, in case you missed it); bloggers and journalists alike use their personal experiences to prove their point in their writing. The blame doesn't solely lie with us, as Vista was by no means perfect, but we did manage to amplify the problems beyond reason. And if the beta is anything to go by, Windows 7 is going to fly. This is, by far, the best beta operating system the software giant has ever released. The media has locked on to this, and is using exaggeration already, before Windows 7 is even ready for prime time."

I agree with everything said in this article.

Fact is Windows 7 will be better, but have many of the same problems.

"Windows 7 uses my ram!"
Windows 7 doesn't use fewer resources, it simply pushes things to the page file more aggressively. For those with a little knowledge, they will say "wow, less ram used, W7 is better." That's only half the picture. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and MS knows that doing something less than optimal is worth it to gain the support of those who know a little, but not enough.

Empty ram is wasted ram. When I play games Vista uses less than 300 MB of RAM. When I'm doing smaller things Vista might swell to take up 1.5 gigs, but that can all be cleared up in a split second (literally) once another program needs it.

"Windows 7 doesn't support my hardware, I even tried using the latest 2001 drivers."

"Windows 7 doesn't run this random program that wasn't programed to MS specifications."

"Windows 7 is slow because HP (or Sony, or Toshiba) installed their crap-ware suite and I don't know how to do a fresh install."

Windows 7 will be good, there is no reason not to wait at this point, but Vista is NOT as bad as many people idly suppose.

has anyone noticed that Windows 7's new features are a lot like Mac's OS X?? i mean, VERY similar.

Kushan6376d ago

That is a debatable issue, but even if it were true - does it matter? If one OS comes up with a good feature, I'm happy for other OS's to do the same. Nobody complained when IE finally got tabs because we can all agree it's a worthwhile feature, so what's the big deal if W7 borrows a few things from OSX?
Apple didn't invent the wheel, they "borrow" stuff all the time, it's a business thing and it makes sense - if it's a good idea, do it.

Elvfam5116376d ago

Never used Mac OS X but if there similarities then i guess they learn from a good OS.

So far its running really smooth for me i forgot one day that i was using it i thought it was Windows XP

Leathersoup6376d ago

My only fear about Windows 7 is what Microsoft is planning to do as far as licensing. I thought I'd heard that they were going to do some stupid payment thing. Does anyone know anything more about that?

Elvfam5116376d ago

That was a rumor but If they do that bs pay per how long you use it im sorry ima move on to some other windows.

Kyur4ThePain6376d ago

Wasn't that a patent application that was rejected?

Proxy6376d ago

Just because a patent is denied doesn't mean they can't use the technique. IDK the details, but it doesn't matter...

Windows 7 (or any OS) would never be licensed on a pay per use basis. However, pay per use would be a reasonable licensing option for things like MS Office; at least in corporate situations.

Elvfam5116376d ago

sorry i wouldn't buy that office product at all first you have to buy then pay for the usage that's really crazy

Proxy6376d ago

They can have other options available.

120$ for home users. One time fee, unlimited use.

120$ per computer it it will be installed on for businesses (quickly become very expensive).

Or: Free installation, but a few center per hour used.

Remember, it was always a rumor anyways, we don't know how MS would use it. However, I'm sure they would come up with a system that is reasonable. I doubt they would make home users pay per use.

Kushan6376d ago

Remember, Microsoft is a MASSIVE software company, that patent could apply to anything, or it could even apply to nothing. Sony filed for a Patent (before the PS3 was released) that would lock a disk to a console, so you couldn't use that disk on a different one (i.e. kill the second hand market). As far as I am aware, they were granted the patent, but nothing ever came of it. Go figure.

Windows 7 will definitely not do this, it wouldn't make sense to since MS would want to capitalise on people who only install Windows for temporary things, like games. You know, Mac users and such (MS Doesn't care that Apple is getting a larger market share - every apple computer can still run windows and quite a large number of users still need windows for something, so it's not really a loss, per se), as someone already commented, it'd likely be for office, or more precisely, "cloud" computing.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio66d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing66d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9266d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit66d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing66d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9266d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
