2009 CES - Halo Wars Controls Demonstration

GamingShogun writes, "We got the chance to talk with Microsoft's Jim Ying about the control system implemented in Ensemble Studios' Halo Wars at this year's CES in Las Vegas, NV. Halo Wars will be released on March 3rd for the Xbox 360 platform with a demo out on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace starting February 5th. The game is set in the Halo universe in the early days of the UNSC-Covenant war..."

ANY RTS on ANY console = fail. look at endwar, solid gameplay and graphics but only sold 500k on both 360 and ps3

RTS was born on the PC should have stayed there

something what really annoys me is that halo wars will probably outsell killzone 2 just cause it has "halo" in the name

(btw there was no fanboyism intended)

Dark Collosis6341d ago

Really that is to funny considering that is exactly what people use to say about FPS games... UNTIL of course HALO came out... Ironic maybe

MGOelite6341d ago

no i actually disagree i think that FPS shooters are way better on consoles, you dont have to worry about hacks like auto aim and other things, and for some reason i think there easyier to control on console since the direction and x and y axis controls are very close to each other instead of your mouse and arrow keys.

these are my opinons btw some pc gamers will strongly disagress and say that there easyier to control

JokesOnYou6341d ago (Edited 6341d ago )

What does KZ2 have to do with Halo Wars? hmmm, maybe you should put more time and energy in buying and playing the games you like and stop trolling news about games you expect to "fail".

Sure the "Halo" name will definitely draw more attention to this game more so than the usual RTS on a console does but gaming history shows that many popular franchise "spin offs" have failed because either there was very little audience for that type of game or baiscly the spin-off itself sucked compared to other games. Halo Wars will be no different, it will succeed or fail based on the quality of the game itself and whether or not it actually appeals to a broader audience in some way MORE than what past RTS(on consoles) have been able to accomplish. It's funny you imply that the Halo name will sell this game whether its a good game or not, just like many on this site always downplay Halo3's success implying its just the name and past success carrying it, now of course that has some truth to it, just as any other enormously successful brand or franchise will have some "carry over success" due to its predeccessor but in the end every game or product has to stand on its own two feet, if it doesn't it will fail just like any other bad/medicore game.

JOY

MGOelite6341d ago

its not halo wars specifically, when endwar came out i said it would flop and i was right, but i think halo wars will sell 2-3 million, and only reason im saying killzone is cause its on the same time and can compare sales to a good game vs a well known franchise

xwabbit6341d ago (Edited 6341d ago )

I dk y people r getting halo wars. Its like the game Tom Clancy's End War... and that game's game play ... yeah.... we can see sails of how popular it was xD

dkp236341d ago (Edited 6341d ago )

Your point is to compare a well known franchise vs a good game, I am only assuming you have not played KZ2 yet, so maybe you could wait till KZ2 comes out before comparing the games instead of already coming to a conclusion that KZ2 is a good game....KZ hasnt really established itself after the original KZ being so terrible. Who knows KZ2 could be a good game, but it also could be a good looking game with repetitive gameplay for an FPS...

Sarcasm6341d ago

I agree with you MGO. Don't let the stubborn minded people annoy you too much.

However, if there is one console that should have had a bigger push in terms of console-RTS. Is the PS3. Why? Mouse K/B support.

If they would just implement more mouse k/b support for games like End War, or even something similar like Halo Wars (I know it's a 360 game, just using it as an example).

Sony has all these things in front of their faces that they could implement on their system to distance itself from the 360. But being the Full Retards that they are, they just let the opportunity slip right pass them.

They have the Playstation Eye, but hardly has any real support for it. Why not an FPS game that recognizes your face in certain areas? Why not have PS eye motion controls PLUS dualshock 3 control. Something like Bioshock where you had to hack the bots, instead have a PS eye mini game where you use your hands to connect the pipes or something. SOMETHING...

As much as I love the PS3, Sony are a bunch of goofballs when it comes to advertising their own products.

As for Halo Wars it's controls look ok but still a little clunky as least compared to a KB&M setup. Maybe one day RTS' will be on par with PC iterations but HW will not be the game to make it so. It'll sell mostly on it's name but still generate low numbers. Most RTS players are PC gamers and are waiting for the real biggies to come, Starcraft 2 and Dawn of War 2. Demigod is looking good as well.

InMyOpinion6341d ago

Did you guys even listen to what Jim Ying in the video had to say?

The controls seem extremely intuitive and easy to use. Unlike PC ported RTS games Halo Wars and especially it's controls are built for the 360 exclusively. I also like that they are bringing out a demo a month before the game drops. Classy move.

true that, if u really break down this game, only thing they are trying to accomplish is controls...and even if they have perfect controls, it wont come close to EndWar command system when fully mastered...halo wars is so plain, with NOTHING going on for it...but since 360 doesnt have much comin out this year, its only right to milk as much halo out of the players as possible

MGOelite6341d ago

the thing with pc is well you can do 2 or more things at once, e.g selecting and using right click with the mouse and doing summat with the keyboard, whereas with a controller you can only do one thing since the cursor is at 1 place at all times,

PC RTSs seem quick and fluid but console ones seem slow and blocky

kwicksandz6341d ago

the nothing coming out argument is as old as the ps3s no games argument. fan boys of both sides should just give it up, because it just makes them look ignorant.

kodiak6341d ago

Cant wait to play this game in xbox live
and some fanboys should stop posting about commands that they dont know

Firstkn1ghT6341d ago

This game is going to be a huge seller that's for sure. RTS games already work on consoles. But dude it looks like each group can do different things by a press of a button like the soldiers throwing grenades. Good stuff!

The Halo Wars Formula Has Potential to Fit More Microsoft Franchises

Halo Wars is still widely considered one of the best and most accessible RTS games around, and that formula could work with other Microsoft IPs.

I think Crackdown would fit in a more turn-based tactics system via Xcom then a RTS type game play. Being able to customize multiple agents, deploying that group in an crime infested urban zone, going against other super powered enemy and fodder type thugs. The potential for that is huge if they won't do another successful, ground breaking, GOTY open world outing like Crackdown 3....

P_Bomb1174d ago

I could see that. I feel like State of Decay could spin-off into something strategic as well.

giovonni1173d ago

Actually that would be kind of fly if they made it a turn base RTS.

lellkay810d ago

Crackdown tactics would be legit!!

Flawlessmic1483d ago

Halo 3 at the top is correct the only thing id change is swap infinite and halo ce around.

AuraAbjure1483d ago

Halo 4 best campaign and multiplayer. Halo 3 best story.

Are you trying to give people cancer?

AuraAbjure1482d ago (Edited 1482d ago )

Halo 4 has the hottest Cortana too which explains why the MC is the hardest in that campaign and why H4's multiplayer is the illest. Chief ain't afraid to take on teleporting enemies that can one hit melee kill.
