Astro Bot Review - IGN

A fantastically inventive platformer in its own right, Astro Bot is particularly special for anyone with a place in their heart for PlayStation.

Profchaos635d ago

I'm calling it early this looks to be a solid goty winner

solideagle635d ago (Edited 635d ago )

94 Meta wow, GOTY contender. it's been a while a platformer won a GOTY apart from Mario etc.

I hope that it sells really well in millions, they should do Holidays bundle with it...

@VenomUK
I agree with you but Sony's 94 Meta = above 95/96 range. Critics are unnecessary harsh these days. I know GTA IV will be 97 or 96 and I know some will say who cares about reviews but some do care....

VenomUK635d ago

NGL if this was a Nintendo game it would be getting elevens all round.

neutralgamer1992635d ago

That is very true because PlayStation exclusives are judged and reviewed much more harshly compared to Nintendo and Xbox

darthv72635d ago (Edited 635d ago )

My copy can't get here soon enough.

GTA IV.... that is 98 on meta. https://www.metacritic.com/...

solideagle635d ago

@darth it was a typo, I meant GTA 6...

MrNinosan635d ago

It Takes Two won like 3 years ago 😏
And did Mario ever win a big GOTY?

outsider1624635d ago (Edited 635d ago )

It's crazy Sony have both a Disaster game and the Best Game in the same month.🤣

-Foxtrot635d ago

@VenomUK

So true

You know those odd 8 out of 10 or the 7.5 one would have been a 9 or 10 out of 10

This is literally the Nintendo effect in action

94 is a fantastic score don't get me wrong, they should be proud but if it was Nintendo they'd be singing the game praises where it would be at 97 now

There's this mindset where only Nintendo can do fun, colourful platformers and with Astro Bot it's now clearly not true.

fr0sty635d ago

It's so good... and it has many of the best songs from the PSVR version, the soundtrack is classic.

VenomUK635d ago (Edited 635d ago )

@-Foxtrot You know, I was half-memeing about the Nintendo issue. But the writer of the IGN review explicitly explains that comparisons to Super Mario is the reason why he didn’t give Astro Bot a 10/10.

IGN Simon Cardy: “For those asking why not a 10 I just felt it didn't quite hit the masterpiece heights of the likes of Mario Galaxy and Odyssey, but it is about as far as Nintendo has been pushed regarding platformers.”

Of course he should compare it to the leading games in a genre, but myself having played Mario Odyssey which is a great game, I do feel it is isn’t a Super Mario 64, but is perceived extra favourably because it is a Nintendo game. The result being Astro Bot didn’t receive a 9/10 from IGN from this guy because of its 9/10 quality, but because it was a top tier game that couldn’t ever get a 10 as it’s not a Nintendo Mario game.

From Concord disaster to ASTRO BOT the GOTY contender. Sony should make a movie about this 😁

Jin_Sakai635d ago

Live service garbage to a single player platforming masterpiece.

Hofstaderman635d ago

Once again, all Sony has to do is to focus on what they good at; single player games and we will get GOTY material. Will be getting this game.

blackblades635d ago

Or y'all should just move on

-Foxtrot635d ago

Jesus

If this wins GOTY and does well sales wise then I’m hoping it sends the right message across the entire industry especially with a live service title like Concord flopping just before this.

Concord had 8 years of development, a big team and rumored to be 100-200 million budget while Astro Bot has a small team of 65, took 3 years development and I’m guessing the budget is much smaller.

It’s a big difference

Hopefully this starts a 3D platform revival and that Nintendo aren’t the only people who can make good platformer games

darthv72635d ago

If this wins GOTY, it proves Sony can still win even without big budget AAA first party titles.

jznrpg635d ago

@Darthv72 they need those as well. They should do both like they did with PS3

--Onilink--635d ago

@darth it needs to sell too. Otherwise executives still find a way to take the wrong lessons

We already saw with Hi-Fi Rush that even a critically acclaimed and award winning game sometimes doesn’t sell as much as we would think it should.

jaymacx635d ago

Getting GOTY isn’t enough to send a message if people don’t go out and buy this game. I hope every PS gamer buys this.

The Wood635d ago

Onlink hi fi didn't sell well because it was on subs and there was no marketing prior to the shadow drop. Gamespassers think or act like these games are free to make as well as free to play. Subs alone rarely make profits for a high proportion of games. If ms actually kept it off subs it may have sold a fair amount thus revenue

Flewid638635d ago (Edited 635d ago )

Even the first one was a blast but games like this don't win that kind of award. At best, a nomination.

Considering the record breaking success if Wukong, my prediction is that it'll win.

Profchaos635d ago

Wukong is a tremendous game and it's success is in spite of the critics bit because if them unfortunately those same critics are heavily involved in these awards

Petebloodyonion635d ago

Don't worry this is the era of fun so it was always sure that this would be the GOTY winner

I reckon this will start a whole new generation of kids into Playsation this Xmas

Specially if they do a bundle / discount

Game is £49.99 in the uk https://www.hotukdeals.com/...

neutralgamer1992635d ago

Hopefully this game does really well and Sony can understand where their priority should be and it’s definitely not on games as service

90sGamingWasBetter635d ago

My 5 year old son loves Astro, he's already a PlayStation gamer.

darthv72635d ago

Has he played Knack and the Ratchet games too? Those are good for young ones to start out on, especially Knack.

outsider1624635d ago

Knack is actually a good game. Both of them. I don't get the hate for them though.
I really hope Sony makes a Knack 3 with the same love Rift apart and Astro both get.

ocelot07635d ago

Currently sitting at 94 on metacritic and 93 opencritic.

There's the sony magic we know and love. Concord was hopefully just a real bad fart that led to a follow through but was quickly cleaned up.

I_am_Batman635d ago

4th best rated 3D platformer of all time on metacritic. Only beaten by the 2 Mario Galaxy games and Super Mario Odyssey.

It's kinda crazy that Team Asobi is already competing on that level with an IP as young as Astro Bot. If this succeeds they'll probably get even more resources and freedom for their next game. Seems like the Astro Bot IP will have a bright future.

ocelot07635d ago

Oh wow that's incredible. I do believe Astro Bot is going to be Sony's new Crash Bandicoot. First Astro game spite bring VR only was one of the best psvr games. The tech demo for ps5 was so good it spawned this game. Now this one is now a potential goty. Another killer IP from Sony.

fr0sty635d ago

I honestly knew this was Astro's future once I played Rescue Mission for PSVR... that game in VR rewrote the rules on what a good platformer is... so much better than anything you could ever do on a flat screen.

Falloutxii635d ago (Edited 635d ago )

Does sony now how a potential mascot? Surprised they didn't push sackboy as one but tbh sackboy looked more generic and simple compared to this.

Profchaos635d ago

Watching some of the video reviews and the game has that certain something like a spark that made so many platformers in the past like Mario 64 and crash legendary.

Yeah I think this could actually be it a proper mascot game that's exactly that

DarXyde635d ago (Edited 635d ago )

Sackboy had (and I say *has) great potential.

You might say he's generic, but Sackboy has always been one that you project yourself onto. He's whomever you want him to be, which isn't that different from Astro bots in my opinion

gold_drake635d ago

im still surprised we havent gotten a trilogy remaster for ps4 and 5

Rimeskeem635d ago

Well Astro's look is actually comparative to PlayStation. Sackboy was supposed to be just a simple customizable guy. Astro actually has the look.

Kakashi Hatake635d ago

Sackboy is a blast with Co op. Don't sleep on that game. It's possible to like both.

DOMination-635d ago

Sackboy was pushed back in the day but this does feel like it can finally deliver a mascot on similar levels to what we've seen from Nintendo.

andy85635d ago

Damn and here I thought Final Fantasy might win a GOTY. That's an astonishing score, 94. Can't wait to play it.

I_am_Batman635d ago

I'd still consider Rebirth the favorite going into the Game awards. A lot of outlets probably gave both games the same score and when it's time to vote, I could see many of them leaning towards giving it to bigger/more ambitious game. Either way both of them are bound to win some awards. At least this makes it more interesting to watch.

andy85635d ago

I'm not sure, I mean remember It Takes Two won it

-Foxtrot635d ago

Rebirth was fun but it had its flaws

A lot of side filler, too many mini games, felt a little stretched out story wise to squeeze in a third game and then there was the ending, how they handled that iconic Aerith scene.

It’s still up there but between the two I’d rather see a platformer take the crown over another open world game.

andy85635d ago

Let's remember a lot of them were optional. You didn't have to play one single game of cards for instance

Might have to finally grab, stellar blade

Pergele192d ago

Such good deals, such wow.

DivineHand125192d ago

There are some deals to be had here, where there are a few games that are at a historically low price, but overall, it could be better.

For example, it is Black Friday, yet not all Sony titles are on sale, only a few of them.

Spiderman 2 is cheaper on PSN than on Steam, but this is an outlier.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is on Steam for $23.99, yet on PSN it is $69.99.
Helldivers 2 on Steam is going for $31.99 vs PSN at $39.99
Horizon Zero Dawn remastered and Forbidden West complete edition are also cheaper on Steam
Both God of War games are on sale on Steam, while on PSN the price is firm.

When looking for the 2024 game of the year nominees, only Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Metaphor: ReFantazio are on sale on all digital stores.

PSN is looking better as the 2025 game of the year nominees are mostly on sale. Hollow Knight: Silksong is not on sale, but that is understandable, as the game was priced low to begin with.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach are all on sale. I am adding Split Fiction, as this game probably should have received a nomination given the universal praise it received at the start of the year.

In terms of deals offered on Black Friday, this is the weakest offering I have seen in a long time. I miss the PS4 Black Friday Sales.

jznrpg192d ago (Edited 192d ago )

The games you listed that aren’t currently on sale have been on sale many times and given on PS Plus. Not everything goes on sale at the same time. They had a PS Studio sale like a couple weeks ago.

PlayStation Portal: Best PS5 Games to Play with Cloud Gaming Right Now

Our list of the best PS5 games to play with cloud gaming on PlayStation Portal. From Astro Bot to Ghost of Yōtei.

darthv72208d ago

I have been using the portal to play robocop, the plucky squire, Spider-man 2 and GoW Ragnarok. I know many were initially turned off on the idea of streaming games... but people really need to give it a fair chance now. Its way better than when it first launched. Stadia was onto something, But Google is not Sony (or MS) and so they had to take the fall so that the other services could rise.

Neonridr207d ago

I'm willing to wager most people who own a Portal also own a PS5. I'm curious to know how the device performs when solely streaming vs using it via Remote Play.

I guess I understand the benefits if you are away from your house, but at home I don't see why you wouldn't still want to just use remote play.

darthv72207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

remote play is handy if the game you want to stream is on your 5, and not already in the cloud service. I found that certain games may say they are streamable, but only if they are actually still in the service. Case in point... I saw that in my list of games in my library was Jedi Fallen Order. I wanted to give that a whirl but it said it was no longer available. I looked on my 5 and sure enough its still there and so I can play that using remote play, but not cloud direct play. I think its because it was a game I claimed from PS+, and it has since been removed. So it is not 'officially' in the cloud streaming list even though it shows as one I could stream from my library.

So I use the actual cloud streaming side for games I do not have installed on my 5. And it works great in my home. I have not tried it from another location, so I dont know how well internet access is outside of my home network. I get ridiculed for saying this but I use the cloud streaming services of both XB and PS as a way to guage interest in fully installing or even purchasing games. Its easier to load up the game via the cloud because you dont have to sit there and commit time to download/install.

If I like what I'm playing... I will do the full commitment and even purchase. If people dont look at this as trying to replace, but instead as a means to compliment the systems... they might find it benefits them more to use these services as a taste test / try before you buy sort of thing. I dont know why that always seems to ruffle people on here when I express how i use them, but it does.

Neonridr207d ago

@darthv72 - that's fair, thanks for the response.

The_Hooligan207d ago

I mainly play JRPGs or similar games on the portal. Currently remote playing DQ3 and it's great. I did play Spider-Man and FF7 intergrade, just to see how it feels when I first bought the portal and it played just fine. But to me, those games are better enjoyed with bigger screens. So games like DQ3 and Unicorn overlord, to me are better suited for portal because you don't need those quick responses from the controller and they are not graphics heavy that you need TV/monitor.

I did play Ghost of Yotei streaming on Portal today and again it played great. No input lag or anything but again a beautiful game like that to me is better enjoyed on a bigger screen.

Hypertension140207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

@darthv72

You're right about streaming. Once you have the proper hardware setup, it works really well.

I've already completed over 10 games on my portal and currently playing through silent hill, Its just really expensive and not everyone has access to super fast internet.

Abear21207d ago

I’ve been playing Dave the Diver and Deliver at all Costs and these are the best types of games to play on it imo. Stardew Valley is warm on the back burner, cannot wait to try Lumines on 11/11.
