Kill The Talk

This was an article written about Killzone 2 and all of Sony's failed marketing well before I got to experience the game first hand at CES. After seeing and playing the game at the "it wont stay in Vegas party" at the Sony lounge, I can now say keep talking, but at the time when this was written I thought differently..

We’d all love to give some words to Sony, i’m sure. I know I would.
There should be KZ2 ads before movies in the theatres.
KZ2 ads during the superbowl.
KZ2 should be sponsoring the next UFC PPV, heck, the next 2!
McKilleyzone meals at fricken McDonalds.

Sony better not slack off on marketing KZ2, I can't imagine them doing that, but hey, sometimes Sony suprises us all huh.

edwineverready6252d ago

Jeffps Jeff Rubenstein the head of the playstation blog about kz2 marketing.
I send him psn message to ask if there will be enough marketing for kz2. he said there will be a full marketing blitz.

GrandTheftZamboni6252d ago (Edited 6252d ago )

I work at a marketing company. I would like to see Killzone Calzone. Okay, I only work for their IT dept. On a more serious note, does anyone know what is the average rate of revenue return from commercials? I mean if you buy 1 million worth of commercials, how much more would you expect the game to sell? 2 million, 10 million?

lord_of_balrogs6252d ago

Well Halo 3 spent 30 million in advetising, and the game made I think 170 million in just 1st day sales. So yes marketing is extremely important.

Sarcasm6252d ago

I don't get why every journalist, 360 fanboy, PS3 fanboy, Microsoft, etc. all know that Sony is a bunch of Full Retards when it comes to marketing, except Sony themselves???

EARTH TO SONY... Get off your high horse, and please market the living day lights of Killzone 2!!! This is your chance!!!

Just show a 30 second clip of the most intense gameplay area in the game, then at the end of it show FEB 27th ONLY ON PLAYSTATION 3. SHOW IT EVERYWHERE! Superbowl, best buy, walmart monitors, movie theatres, whereever you can!

/vent

But I got my copy reserved :D

GrandTheftZamboni6251d ago

Any idea how is 60 bucks (per copy) split between developer, publisher, console maker etc.?

Da One6251d ago

Yeah but this is a first party game.......................... there is only one split and that's between Sony and the retailers, same goes for Halo 3(MS owns Halo, Bungie is just paid to make it)

So them marketing it like they did was the smartest(and also one of their best strength, marketing) thing they could have done

General Chase6251d ago

Its not all about internet hype and advertising on gaming sites. I, honestly, don't ever remember seeing commercials/Ads on television for Resistance 2 or Little Big Planet until after the game had launched. But, for the 360, I see Ads/Commercials weeks before the game launches. Sony's marketing team needs to get on the ball for Killzone, because, even though I own a 360, I want to see this game do well.

shazam6251d ago

im pretty sure you meant 17 million unless every 360 owner bought like 8 or 9 copies.

IcarusOne6251d ago (Edited 6251d ago )

I'm very excited about this game and I want it to do well. More and more it's starting to feel like the 5th Cylon, like the future of the PS3 hinges on KZ's performance. I want the PS3 to astonish us. I want this game to garner support and excitement for the console. But for that to happen, Sony needs to advertise it.

It reminds me of Casino Royale. When I saw this in theaters, my friends and I were watching the preshow entertainment, interviews and behind the scenes on upcoming shows and movies. Then between stories, Mad World started playing and Marcus Fenix held the statue's head in his large hand. And the entire theater - packed house - went silent. People whispered, "Sssh. Gears." It was awesome. It was a moment.

KZ needs this kind of add. Something to galvanize us all. Something to quiet a sold-out crowd for a summer blockbuster to the point you could hear a pin drop.

Agent VX6252d ago

I really don't get the whole MGS 4 thing. Yep, it was a good game, but not mind blowing like the media would have you believe.

Although I really think Killzone 2 could be Sony's biggest console seller so far, I think they are really blowing it by not advertising this title, and thus the Killzone 2 opportunity will be wasted.

Sony really needs help the generation, from their horrible sales so far. They better start spending some cash on advertising.

Unicron6252d ago

It's an opinion, which is all reviews are. Different people have different opinions. I could say the same about Halo 3 personally. To each his own, ya know?

Mr Tretton6252d ago

The media didn't effect what I think about MGS4. (It was mind blowing) And your single opinion on it is irrelevant on what that game was to other people. You 'not getting it' doesn't make it falsely good to other people. But of course, you're a troll.

And your statement could just as much as apply to Halo 3 not being as great as MS wanted people to...'Believe.'

Graphics Whore6252d ago

Intelligent people like intelligent games. That's all I'm saying.

Sarcasm6252d ago

"Intelligent people like intelligent games. That's all I'm saying."

And to understand the complex story of MGS4, being Intelligent is a requirement. So it pretty much excludes Agent VX. Married and does nothing but troll on N4G PS3 news. Sad.

Agent VX6252d ago

I personally liked MGS 4 more than Halo 3, as both titles were overblown. Never did fit in the whole Halo thing. In actual fact, I liked Halo 3 more for the single player mode than multiplayer mode. Now that is f#$ked. COD 4 completely ruined my experience with Halo 3. As for MGS 4, great single player game, multiplayer sucks!!!

But back to the issue... Killzone 2 should be heavily advertised. If I already didn't own a PS3, I would buy one because of Killzone 2. But it isn't advertised??? MGS 4 never blew my mind graphically, and maybe it is because I played Crysis on the PC. But Killzone 2, while not graphically superior to Crysis, is easily the best looking title on any console, and it does look fun to boot.

Quit with the fanboy talk, and blame Sony for not getting the word on this title.

As for Sarcasm's comment... typical goofy fanboy trash talk. It's too bad that this site has to be plagued with this kind of trolling.

Unicron6252d ago

It's true. Sony needs to advertise this game heavily, and if they don't, they only have themselves to blame.

General Chase6251d ago

So, being intelligent is a prerequisite for the Metal Gear Solid Franchise. I'm sorry, but I think we all missed something between Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4. Did Snake wake up one day, at 2AM, get out of bed, look in the mirror and see that he was old? I'm wondering what happened. How did Liquid Ocelot get control of such a large army? Why are there nano-machines? There are so many questions that needed answering that made teh game bad story-wise. Sure, I could have looked at the Codex thing that the game has, but I want to experience it through Snake's eyes.
Plus you wouldn't believe the amount of used MGS4 games I have seen at Gamestop...I guess there must be tons of people out there that must lack the intelligence to play the game because of the holes in the story.

IcarusOne6251d ago

MGS4 was awesome, but not divine, and it certainly wasn't promoted well enough. And now it looks like the same fate will befall KZ2.

And Mr. Tretton, as you said, everyone's entitled to their own opinions. And calling Agent VX a troll simply because he doesn't share your overzealous adoration for Kojima just makes you look like an absolute a$$.

Giriath6252d ago (Edited 6252d ago )

It's ridiculous that the entire game industry is telling Sony to market this game, and we have yet to see any such activity (that isn't backwards pre-order deals). Usually everyone hates advertisment in their mail and in the middle of their TV show, but now people are actually begging Sony to advertise. I guess that goes to show how pathetic SCE's marketing division is.

And I agree with the author: the Xbox 360 wouldn't have such success if Microsoft didn't market it so superbly. I guess the same can be said about Nintendo's Wii.

Sarcasm6252d ago

It is ridiculous when you have even their own "Fanboy" brigades telling them how crappy of a job their doing.

Giriath6252d ago

Do you imply that I'm a fanboy, Mr Sarcasm?

bassturd6252d ago (Edited 6252d ago )

I dunno...I think Sony is starting to get it. In the US I see as many Playstation 3 television ads as I do 360 ads. Sony is putting on a lot of ads for the Playstation Network. I've also been seeing ads about downloading movies on PSN. So they are doing it. You know they commercial where the guy is unpacking the PS3 and downloading movies and stuff with his friends.

As for advertising games....I was about to say they don't. But actually...Motorstorm Pacific Rift had tons of TV ads. MGS4 did. Little Big Planet also did.

So I dunno...I don't get all the hate. They have yet to put out Killzone 2 ads but I'm sure they will.

Sarcasm6251d ago

oh my bad, it wasn't directed at you. i'm just reiterating what you're saying.

what i'm saying is even the hardcore ps3 fanboys agree that Sony's advertising sucks.

callahan096251d ago

I wouldn't say "We have yet to see any such activity."
Every time I go into GameStop there's Killzone 2 posters everywhere, and they ask if you'd like to reserve it. That's got to count for something. Most gamers in the USA seem to get their games from GameStop, so having Killzone 2 posters all over the stores already is evidence of a mounting marketing campaign from Sony, and it'll contribute to some sales, for sure.

Not many games get a full marketing blitz more than a month before release. If any. I can't think of any that did. Not even Halo 3 was marketed to the extravagances 5 and a 1/2 weeks prior to its release. I'd say that if we don't start seeing commercials by February 1st, though, it might be time to start wondering what Sony's doing on. Feb. 1st just happens to be the Superbowl. So, I really hope to see a kick-ass Killzone 2 commercial during the Superbowl.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 6251d ago
Mr Tretton6252d ago

Well, the game is still far away from release for a big marketing blitz just yet. Does anyone have any idea when they started seeing GTA4 or COD4 ads? Certainly not more than a few days before release.

There is an early ad in Game Informer so far, at least.

General Chase6251d ago

If the game, any game, is about a month away, that's when commercials need to start a slow trickling in on T.V. Then, it needs to begin a slow, but steady, pick up in advertising. I don't want a game to be out a week then start seeing this gigantic increase in Ads. It needs to start before the game comes out. So, by this logic, which I am sure is flawed, I want to see a plethora of commercials by the time a game has a week before coming out.

Blaze9296252d ago

Sony finally started they marketing in full blast last month December and i saw commercials left and right...now its back to not seeing squat again. I dont think Killzone 2 will be much different. You'll see it...but not how it should be.

Lord Vader6252d ago

Sony's financial condition may have something to do with the lack of advertizement. But the internet Hype surrounding this game is insane.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX494d ago (Edited 494d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne494d ago (Edited 494d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro494d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken494d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown494d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72494d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken494d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya493d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast494d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood494d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro723d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72723d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_723d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga723d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos723d ago (Edited 723d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23723d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000723d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin723d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole723d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix723d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989723d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor723d ago (Edited 723d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

1Victor1027d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1027d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491026d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381027d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1027d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1027d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381027d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1027d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761027d ago

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1027d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1027d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

lukasmain1027d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
