VGChartz is defo not the right source for information data, the least they could do is update the american and japan statistics according to the monthly/weekly released data (by NPD or the one from Japan).. i would defo give them more credibility if they did that.. however, they stand with their numbers and don't care.. and are usually miles off (in a negative way) with PS3 and are miles off (in a positive way) for the 360.. haven't paid much attention to the Wii figures..

From what I understand, VGChartz is the only reliable sales data source for worldwide sales. Although it's less accurate than NPD, it still gives a worldwide statistic while NPD is limited to U.S. only.

The numbers may be off but not so much to be a concern here. Older statistics have a much better chance to be adjusted and corrected. The risk of inaccuracy lies within the Christmas '08 season, where the 360 outsold the PS3 by a huge margin.

So ms was not talking bs when they said they have a 8mill lead.Any way we all know the head start is major factor but u have to admit the sony should have handled the ps3 launch better, if they brought out the ps3 with a good price and more games at launch then i think it would have sold alot more than it did.I still think the 360 will finish 2nd this gen but i have a feeling it will be close,i wonder what the hell are all those ps2 owners waiting for.Iknow the ps3 is till a bit expensive but "come on" Sony needs u more than ever this gen...

I have both console so i dont really care who wins what, is ps3 fan boys i feel sorry for. They will find it hard to blive that ms is actualy giving sony a run for there money this gen when every one tought it could never happen.

I don't think the PS 2 owners are waiting anymore, I guess they are buying Wii's and 360's. Everyone that I new that had PS 2 now has 360 mainly because the online is so good.

ok good point but check this:

360 has a lead of 7 million rough
The Headstart for the 360 is 5.5 million
so its a lead of 1.5 million consoles
The 360 Lead is also because people know the product 1 year longer then the ps3. Wich is a crucial faktor in adaption rates.

The ps3 sold more in its first 20 months then the 360 did.

The advantage for the 360 was mainly generated after the immense price cut last fall. When sony launches the ps3 slim and/or reduces the price for the ps3 this spring. Expect that gap to melt in a few months.

RE5 sales for its first week will be 859,943 on x360 and 429,937 on ps3. see i should be hired at vg charts also.

Why does this data matter? As long as both companies are doing good (which they are) then that only means a better game industry doesn't it. If the game industry is doing good then that means all gamers everywhere are doing good does it not. The more competition one company has for the other that also equals better ideas, games, deals, and all around growth. Bubbles for those who agree.

How come these idiot fanboy articles keep forgetting to put in the FACT that the Playstation sold 6 PS2's to 1 Xbox last gen. That's right folks, 6 to 1 in favor for Sony.

Why don't they factor that in the equation, and the PS3 should be selling easily more than the 360, but it is not. That is failure on a monumental scale. Sony from going to a 6 to 1 to a less than 1 to 1 in direct competition with Microsoft. Talk about losing your fanbase in one generation.

That's the thing people are missing here, it's the fact that the ps3 is doing badly versus the ps2, not the 360. I still think this is mainly due to price. Before this December the highest selling month for the 360 was the month in which the original ps3 price was announced, which shows the fans felt shocked and weren't willing to pay that amount of money for a console, regardless of the value it represented. If Sony had released a minor ps2 upgrade with dvd and had it close to the ps2 price, you can guarantee it would be doing wii sales right now.

The advantage of the 360 with a year ahead and the price cut is really low considering that the PS3 is "more expensive" than the 360, and let's cut that advantage by dismissing the replacement buys that many people made, maybe the PS3 should be even ahead of the 360 right now or maybe it's ahead with real functioning hardware.

What's relevant is not which has moved more units. They are not even going after the same market. The 360, after falling to last place for most of 2008, has been repositioned with price cuts and UI redesign and is now aimed at the low end of the market while the PS3, with it's more advanced capabilties, is going for the high-end. The low end of the market is much larger than the high end so it's no surprise that the 360, after the price drop, moves more units. There are simply more customers at the low end of the market.

What's relevant is which is doing a better job at selling to it's intended market.

For example, the Ford Mustang is aimed at the low end of the performance car market where it's all about 1/4 mile, 0-60 while Nissan GT-R is aimed at the high-end technophile who wants and is willing to pay extra for superior all-round performance. Since more people can afford Mustangs, it should be no surprise that Mustangs sell more than the GT-R.

If people are trying to use sales figures to argue that one console is "better" than the other they are barking up the wrong tree. Everyone knows the PS3 is a much more powerful and forward looking platform with the Cell processor, standard hard-drive, standard Blu-Ray, and standard wifi. The question is whether the market is ready for such a product. The success of the Wii suggests that the market would have been perfectly fine with an upgraded PS2.

This means that until the mass-market is knowledgeable and ready for features like Blu-Ray, wifi media streaming to the living room, and web-browsing on the TV, the PS3 should not be targeting regular mass-market consumers.

WANNA GET HIGH: Do you think it's easy for Sony to drop the price at launch? They're not stupid. They would obviously drop the price if they could. Fact is that they were already selling at a lost. Correct me if I'm wrong but it took about $1000 to make a PS3 and they sold it for $600. MS is giving a run for Sony's money by using their own money to win (You know what I mean). The good thing MS did for Sony is by releasing XBL because I am sure that they would not have improved PSN in so many ways and yet still keep it free. After PSN has cross game chat and In-game music I'll think it's prefect. For now, it's good enough for the price of free. Plus the games are coming in for PS3 all the time; new IP's and old ones. Basically I'm satisfied with my PS3 and my Wii for parties and Brawl :D.

the 360 has not sold 27 million yet.,.those are all shipped to retailers...

watch at E3 M$ will announce that thay have currently sold 27-28 360's , just like they did last year...give out blouted figures because they flood the retailers with alot fo 360's...

how some of you always want to discredit SONY... Do you really think SONY expected to roll over the competition at their price point. I know they had some arrogance coming in to this generation but they were realistic. I do think SONY will overcome it's price and with it's very strong first party support they will do very well in the long run. The PS3 has a ten year plan. They haven't even reached the 25% mark. It's not to say they will sell 100 million consoles but I do think in the long run they will be pretty successful...

Please post some links (to repuatble sources) to back up your opinion that 360 has not sold 27 million yet, that PS3 is over 20 million, and that only MS reports "shipped" numbers". Without proof, your claims have no validity.

People knowing that PS3 is coming soon, is enough competition for Microsoft. Playstation brand has always been and still is the most well known console brand (maybe Wii soon).

Even if MS started year early, I can only wonder why PS3 has not managed to catch up yet. That's pure failure to Sony. PS3 should have surpassed 360 sales already according to success of PS1 and PS2.

Steady fanbase only started to crumble when PS3 was launched. Sadly PS3 is only now starting to show some signs of those promises Sony made before the launch which of course should have been reality at launch day.

Xbox360 managed to lure new player, not the Sony players, but what is really odd is that PS3 could not even lure the former Playstation brand supporters to buy it.

It is just SAD how PS3 fanboys still try to hang on to year early, year early, that's sad really.

I know it's about sales numbers, but damn, SONY PLAYSTATION should have won already. It has always rocked the gaming world... untill now.

The way I see it, there are 2 and only 2 reasons that the PS3 is behind. 1. The 360 was released a year earlier (say what you want but that IS a valid argument) and 2. The PS3 is too expensive.

Considering those things, the PS3 is doing pretty well and a price cut is all Sony really needs to start closing the gap.

I can sort of understand the lack of confidence in Sony this gen but let's just remember what the deciding factor in the Blu-Ray - HD DVD war was. Remember how everyone was on about how Blu-Ray was doomed and that the inclusion of a Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 was a complete waste of time? Turns out Sony might have known what they were doing after all.

When it comes down to it, it's far too early to start using the words win and lose (unless you're talking about the Wii, but that doesn't count). There's still a good 8 years left in this and things are going to change drastically in that time.

Basically, Sony have done this before. They kinda know what they're doing.

Saint Sony: You people's excuses have evolved over the years. Back then it was:
- Expensive
- No games
- No Rumble
- Mutli-platforms sucks
- PSN is a hassle

Now it's
- Sales under millions are flops
- PS3 is not selling well

Notice how times have changed. Sony fixed all the problems you were complaining about and some are almost fulfilled. PSN is very clsoe to XBL in terms of service and extras and PSN is still free. Keep on complaining man, keep on complaining.

RRoD buyers and the clowns that buy a 360 while their home unit is out for repair and then return the "rental" unit when their system comes back from depot. Yes, people do it all the time, and it counts as a sale for the 360. No, I don't agree with the practice, but it happens all the time.

I wonder how many of these "rental" purchases have skewed the sales data in MS's favor? Not that I care, I'm enjoying my games, but it's another factor that people HAVE to consider when you talk about sales #'s.

I don't want to play shooters without a mouse and I don't like jrpg so, the exclusive list does not include a lot for me at the moment.

Whenever the PS3 hits the 199$ price point I buy one though.

Indeed 360 was the first next gen console out there, but also 100% of the buyers knew PS3 is coming soon... yet not even old PS1/PS2 fanbase is buying PS3 now, so I guess Sony did mistake somewhere.

Anyhow, even if it was the first next gen console on the market, there WAS competition with Sony Playstation brand. PS3 was the most highly anticipated next gen console EVER.

Ps2 Base -140 million
Ps3 base -20 Million
How the hell can you justify that right now Saint Sony? Especially since the PS2 was virtually uncontested until the X-box came out, 360 came out first, & dropped the prices a couple times. Ps2 has a 140 million consumer base. Where do you think the rest of that 100 million could go?

Yes the gap is getting bigger,but that dose not mean sony will stop making the ps3.People who think that the ps3 will end up like dreamcast are stupid.Sony is bigger than sega and sony is more than the playstation.Even tho they use all the profit on the ps2 for the ps3(which can never happen) they will still have money coming in from, music,cds.movies,phones,laptop s ....e.t.c.So they can never go bankrupt like %90 of blogers think.

Well it's not as simple as that.

In 2006 the 360 dominated the PS3 the few months it was out in the US and Japan.
The PS3 sold less in the first half on 2007 than the 360
In the second half on 2007 the PS3 sold more than the 360.
In the first half of 2008 the PS3 sold more.
After the 360 price-cut in the last half og 2008 the 360 took the lead again.

The next logical move is a PS3 price-cut that once again give them the lead in sales. In a couple of years they will both be at almost the same price point. That is were the winner will be decided and the sales will be 2-3 times greater that what they are selling today. Meaning a gap of 6-8 million isnt much.

It`s 200 euro for 60Gb model and 400 euro for PS3 80GB, and Arcade is even cheaper.

It`s 20k for Arcade and 30k for x360 with 2 games in Japan, vs 40k for PS3.

Even in strongest region NA, x360 is still cheaper.

During PS2 gen, xbox and GC were trying to match PS2 price or to sell CHEAPER, BUT PS3 is selling STRONG at 400$/Euros.
I see, M$ being desperate for sales, while Sony is holding STRONG. =)

Don't forget, this was first christmas where bluray was the only nextgenformat. Fanboys made a big deal of it a few months ago. Yes, the ps3 is more expensive, but it's more expensive because it has some extras that 360 does not have.

I mean, one could argue that even though you have to pay 50$ every year for Xbox live, more people are choosing Microsofts console for online play.

We can spin that too like the media did and blame the PS3's price as the main reason. The entire internet media is claiming the PS3 as doomed because of it's higher price. This article has clearly demonstrated otherwise.

It's true, the PS3 does need a price drop in response to the 360's recent one. However, the PS3 can stay more expensive will less exclusives and outsell the 360. It will be interesting to see what happens in '09 where the main change will be more exclusives.

The things that annoys me about these repeated analogies are the constant excuses as to why things has happened.

Really? What about MSG4, LBP, Etc. Shouldn't these hugely hyped titles have been able to carry the PS3 flag until the rest of the calvary arrived? Additionally, the author isn't telling the entire story, yes the PS3 did beat the 360 several months out of the year, however with the exception of the MSG4 month, it was by 20,000 - 40,000. per month. that's at best case 320,000 units, then in December alone the 360 beat the PS3 by 700,000+. It's not the quarterly scores that matter, it the score when the final buzzer rings. Too bad the writer could have written this article more like a journalist and less like a fanboy.

The 360 had the same headstart on the wii, but they are not complaining. Because it's simply a silly excuse to make little fangirls feel better about their purchase. Everytime the 360 beats the PS3, the same excuses comes from the PS3 camp making them bullet proof to reality; which is just silly. Then, when the PS3 wins a month or quarter, the same fanboys used the past months excuse for loosing and a booster. i.e. "The PS3 beat the 360 dispite being more expensive and the 360 had gears come out." But if the 360 wins, we hear "the 360 is cheaper, plus gears came out." Common guys you can't have it both ways.

Besides, EVERY ps3 fanboy on this site says the PS3 is worth the price and is a great value because it has more features than the 360. Well if this is true, then the 360 is not cheaper, They are both priced just right. And therefore asking for a price drop is ridiculous. You are getting what you pay for in each item. So that excuse is dead. If the 360 had a little over 5 mil lead when the PS3 was released and is now 8 million ahead, that means (Using the writer's logic) The 360 would be leading the PS3 by 2 mil+ had they released at the same time, or do you have logic to swing that in your favor also.

Bottom line folks, enough with the excuses. It is what it is. Perhaps the zune is not beating the ipod because the ipod had a 5 year headstart. The playstation name and brand should have carried 10 times the weight of the 1 year headstart the 360 had. Why aren't PS3 fans saying "Damn" The 360 is still beating us dispite then having the RROD problem. RROD along should have allowed the PS3 to catch the 360. So, instead of blaming everyone and everything else, try blaming Sony for screwing this up, you sure as hell would have blame Microsoft if the roles were reversed.

Sony definitely could have advertised both the games and the console a little better. Another problem I saw early on was that sony pushed the PS3 10 times more as a blu-ray player than they did a game console. Which to me appears as if they took their fanbase for granted thinking the playstation name would carry the PS3 without any advertisements.

I was one of those people that paid 599 for the original 60 gig model. Because I like to get thing first and be on the leading edge of technology. Sometimes, I question whether I should have waited, but I'm fine with my PS3. I just hope it doesn't break as it's now out of warranty.

Considering Microsoft are not announcing most of there exclusives yet we can't really say who will have the most. Im sure that in 08 the Ps3 had more exclusives but still lost out in sales.
We all know its the price which is hampering the Ps3 and they need a drop. the only thing that might hamper that is if Microsoft once again drops there which unlike Sony they can afford to do.
Either way im sure the Ps3 is fine and will continue to do well.

I really hate when people say stuff like this. If it's okay to just ASSUME Microsoft has a crapload of games to announce, then isn't just as valid to assume Sony also have some more games in the pipeline for 2009? and if that's the case then Sony's will the still have more games.

Besides, how many games do you think Microsoft will announce anyway? they have like five in-house studios and 3rd parties are going to have a hard time ignore 20 million more potential sales.

Sony even announced "Secret ps3 game", so I doubt they are keeping anything else from the press ;)

And even if Microsoft may get beaten in exclusives, there are still alot of multiplat games coming. It's not like either console has "no games for 2009"

The Gap is getting smaller you guys, if you add up the european, USA, and Japan sales, PS3 outsold them in 08 and they also outsold 360 in 07. I have absolutely no idea how the 360 has 28 million sold and made the gap 8 million. They must have sold 3 million more than PS3 in 08 which wasnt the case. The gap at start of 08 was 5 million. Somewhere the numbers are being blown out of proportion.

If it had anything to do with "a year headstart" the wii would be at 5 million sold instead of the 40 million + sold since its release....

The ps3 is over priced , The software is lacking for casual gamers , and in general is not a product the market really needs right now.

The 360 offers EVERYTHING the consumer needs at a price they can afford

You want to play some video games?
200 dollars will let you play video games on the 360!

You want to play some games online?
50 dollars gives you a year of the most feature rich online experiance on consoles.

You want to watch HD movies and dont want to pay 30 dollars a pop for blu rays?

360 has got you covered with a vast video rental program and if you already have netflix you can stream you movies directly to the console!

You have an arcade system and think you are ready to experiance new things like online play and more hard drive space for music and content?
360 is upgradable for the consumer so they have the choice

Sure you can spend 400+ dollars up front for all of these things and more on ps3, But why spend extra money up front for features you dont need or plan to use?

THAT is why ps3 is dead last and will remain there for the rest of the generation

i bought all the add-ons minus the hd addon i got the play and charge kit, wireless add-on, external cooler and 3 months live but maybe thats because i need them all i have the cooling fan on all the time all day all night to keep it nice and cold and im a computing student and i know if the buss memory gets to cold whtn you turn the thing on it will cause it to crach and eventualy break but im willing to give it a shot so far so good but what i dont get is WHY WONT IT PLAY FARCRY 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! games brand new not got a scratch/fingure pirnt and it wont play!!!!!

Yeh at the beginning of 08 the gap was supposed to be around 5 million. The ps3 was outselling 360 for most of the year until the price drop...so 360 sold 3 million extra consoles in half a year?

But at the beginning of January, it was suddenly 28 million. How they managed to sell 3 million consoles in 4 weeks is beyond me. That's Wii status right there.

But they've always been a bit murky in terms of sales figures. Not a big issue though since Sony and Nintendo don't care about anyone but themselves.

Because the PS3 is a 10 year product...the wii 2 will be out in less than 2 years...do you think all the wii people are gonna buy a wii 2 in less than 2 years? NO...no when the PS3 will be around $199 by then and have even better killer games...The Xbox 360 is actually doomed but it is not a failure...28 million sold is a good number but a lot of these are replacements. Microsoft will have to come out with a Xbox 360-2 or 720 and sell it for the same price of the Xbox 360 to make any sells.

Sony can wait another 5 years to release a totally new PS4...and when they do they will price it at $299 or less. They know the tech and they know price is the killer...look for a dual cell configuration with dual HDMI ports and the lastest bluray drive in about 3 to 5 years in the PS4.

Killzone 2 will bring lots of PS2 people into the PS3 fold...and sony is till rumored to be working on software PS2 emulation in all PS3s...so look for that. 2009 is going to be a good year for sony. We all know we are going to get a good price drop...but it could be bigger than we think...maybe even $150 price drop...

What sony should do is drop the price by $100..
Add 2 USB 2.0 ports to the back plus the 2 on the front.
Add a eSATA port
Offer 3 different colors white, red and black..
This is all to the current design...

If they redesign it and go slim...then go with a replacable SSD drive of 64GB and 45nm chips and two USB ports on the back...and price it at $299 and off 3 different colors, white, red, and black.

Notice we can already put in a SSD drive into the current PS3...and these drives are getting cheaper by the day.

And bluray standalone players will hit below $100 by this christmas 2009...

There was the report of several million broken 360s still stored in warehouses, waiting to be refurbished as replacement units. But that was a year ago. The number of working 360 units is probably within the 22~23 million unit range. It would explain why multiplatform sales are nearly identical between the PS3 and 360 (slight edge to the 360 in almost every case).

I was just going to say that software sales are the litmus test against Microsofts lies. The fact that every major publisher announced the PS3 as their biggest moneymaker this year proves that MS is using VERY inflated numbers for actual working 360s. By the end of this year the software gap will get even bigger in PS3's favor at which point I think developers will start to call MS on their spin and lies signaling game over for the 360.

No matter what the price difference would have been the 360 would be in last place if launched at the same time. With the way Sony dominated last gen even at a higher price than the 360, it would still sell more. Clearly the main reason they are in second place in console sales is due to the year to year and a half head start. The price cuts have helped maintain that lead.

I can't take this article seriously, VGcharts, really? Oh, this so sounds like someone learned a new word in school and wanted to use it. There should be no need to prove that a system wasn't a flop in sales if it actually wasn't a flop. If you deny November 2008 being a flop, you are a.) an idiot and b.) a fanboy which makes you really stupid.

Call it whatever you want, but as it stands, Wii is in first, Xbox 360 is in second, and PS3 is in third, and that is unlikely to change unless Sony drops the price and improves PSN, giving it some of the very basic features it still lacks. That's people's attraction to the Xbox 360, LIVE, fanboys will complain of it costing 50 bucks but if you can't afford 50 bucks a year, you are not only pathetic, but you shouldn't even own a gaming console.

Will PS3 catch up, possibly, soon, doubtful, we'll have to wait till about Christmas 2009.

I can agree with almost everything there until you start in with the cost of LIVE.

Considering the improvements on PSN over the last two years and it's still free, I'm not complaining. And while b!tching about $50 on XBL is also stupid, sadly, there ARE people out there who bought their 360's on a small windfall of money, and can't afford much else, at least not right away.

Agreed Slaughter, there are those who bought the Xbox 360 on a small budget, and that's why there is Silver. I believe that those who bought a gaming console on a limited budget should not be playing online. Heck, they shouldn't have bought a console until they got their financial status straightened out.

I also agree that PSN has come a long way, and its good that they are trying to do this for free, but it has a long way to go, and being free should not be an excuse for its stability issues for new titles that launch. Sure, every online service has its problems, but (nearly) every time is unacceptable.

You can even find the NPD numbers on N4G for the United States. Outside the United States, there are bureaus that do the same thing, I am just not sure what they are called.

The NPD data is for the U.S. While it may be a more accurate and reliable source, it still doesn't provide the overall picture of sales. Microsoft and Sony are each one entity. They receive money from the 360 and PS3 from other countries as well. So if you are saying NPD is your source then you are basically claiming that:

Wii is #1 in the U.S.
360 is #2 in the U.S.
PS3 is #3 in the U.S.

I'm just not going to even say it. If you looked at the most recent overall numbers (I would dig up them up, but I don't have time to be bothered), you will note that the Wii and Xbox 360 are ahead of the PS3 in Europe, and in Japan, I believe the outlook is Wii, PS3, 360, but I could be wrong.

They're no different than VGChartz. They have their sources and then using the magic of statistics they extrapolate and guess the rest. That's exactly what NPD does, but truthfully only the companies themselves know exactly how many units are shipped out to stores and if it's shipped, it's paid for.

The New York Times, New York Post, Forbes, BBC and Fortune have all used VGchartz as a source. If VGchartz is a good enough source for these publications, I think that speaks for itself.

but it's peanuts in the long run. Ps2 out sold ms and nintendo last gen by over 120 million consoles, and that number grows everday because ps2 is still in the market and still sells wonderfully for how old it is. And it's still priced at 129.99, over $100 dollars. sony could drop the price to $99 at the drop of a hat, but they don't have to. Anyway, the point is, Until the xbox 360, wii, and ps3 completely get pulled from the market NOBODY can declare a winner.

The 360 last year just barely past the original xbox's lifetime sales. The xbox sold embarassingly low, so that's not saying much at all, especially now that 360 has been on the market over half the time that the original xbox has been. And now there's already talk about xbox 720 coming out in 2 years? the 360 won't end up selling much more than the orignal if that is the case. So weak.

I think what most people are forgetting is that there is a world outside the internet. A world that doesn't listen (or care to listen to) internet articles.

And from what I'm seeing, there's a LOT more people out there not reading this stuff than otherwise. I run into people all the time still wondering what the hell happened to HD-DVD...you should see the look on their faces when they find out its been gone for almost a year. And I don't blame them for it at all...it got very little recognition outside the internet.

The apathy for gaming articles online is astronomical to put it mildly. At least to the general public. I've observed numerous people trading in and selling all different consoles for all different reasons, and never once was the reason because "I read something online that says this system sucks."

Thankfully, the gaming public outside the internet isn't so stupid.

Common enough with the cross talk, the wii has sold more than twice ass many as the PS3 so let's do this, compare every two wiis to the PS3, now at this price the wii is more expensive than the PS3, less advance, and still outselling it.

The playstation 3 has been out for two years now and has continued to loose ground to the 360 which has been plagued with RROD.

Have you ever though about how well the 360 may have done had RROD not existed. I know, I know that's microsoft's fault for releasing and unfinished product trying to beat sony to market. Yet, you are unwilling to blame sony for the sluggish sells of their poorly advertised movie player first console second, (sony advertised this thing more as a video player than a gaming console, and it bit them in the A$$) it's much easier to make excuses and blame others for your short comings. This is sadly becoming the way of the world.

Two years later, double the price point of the 360, and it's actually doing better than the 360 did during its first two years. I mean, at the end of 2007 there were 17.7 million 360s sold. At the end of 2008, it's estimated Sony sold around 20 million PS3s. Pretty good if you ask me.

Obviously not as successful as the Wii, but they are doing quite well.

Uh, you never mention that during that time period they 360 had this huge disease know as RROD. While you were doing your 2 year comparison as if all was even.

How would the 360 have sold had it not been for RROD?

I know that using RROD is lame, but so are these analogies of "you were here at two years and I was here..." One could also say "I had major hardware problems and you didn't have any yet I'm still increasing my lead over you."

Stop making excuses. Last place is where the PS3 is. These are the facts. You cannot deny this. You cannot spin this. You cannot ignore this. You cannot change this.

In the 2 years since the PS3 launched the 360 has expanded it's lead over the PS3.

It doesnt matter how many PS3 exclusives come out. How much better PSN gets. What Home evolves into.

There is no way the PS3 can eliminate that 8 million gap before the next generation of consoles is launched.

Listen to the post above.

With these numbers, *EVERY* PS3 3rd party exclusive just went multi-plat. Sony's **OWN** troubles (multi-billion losses) are going to mean CUT-BACKS in 1st party titles (as has already begun).

The PS3 **cannot** come back before the next gen starts -- were almost half-done this gen!

Wait until MS launches PrimeTime (mark my words) that will be when the Xbox 360 overtakes even the Wii when people see Massively Multiplayer game-shows with real-prizes in their living room. When MS rolls out rafts of social titles built around Avatars. When more people get wind of Netflix. When MS actually RELEASES info on the 2009 exclusives.

MS is going to utterly BURY the PS3 in 2009. Sony will try and move to PS4 as soon as possible (if at all).

Have you seen the NDP December 2008 Numbers? Its a bloody epic failure for PS3 *again* this year.

As the President of Sony Computer Entertainment, I declare that the Playstation 3 sales flop is definately not a fallacy. The Playstion 3 has been consistently lagging being its competitors in both sales and quality for a number of years now. We here at Sony are trying to remedy this issue but have been unsuccessful thus far. Due to Mr. Kutaragi's bad decisions in the design of the PS3, I am now stuck with the consequences of Blu-ray and the inferior Cell Processor. However, the future looks bright for the Playstation 3 as I am now in talks with Remedy to bring Alan Wake to the Playstation 3 gaming console. If we are unable to acquire this game, I'm afraid the Playstation brand as we know it will not surive beyond 2009.

As the Leader of The Microsoft Defense Force, I declare that the 360 sales cannot even surpass the Wii. The XBox360 has been consistently lagging behind the Wii and constantly breaks down like the piece of sh*t that it is. We here at Microsoft are always trying to nickel and dime our consumers because we sure do love our money. Due to my company's many, many mistakes with the console itself...including the dreaded RROD, I am now stuck with the consequences of the RROD and the inferior DVD9. That is why games like Metal Gear Solid 4 cannot fit and if the developers did try...it would span across many, many disks.

However, the future looks bright for the 360 as I am now in talks with Konami to bring MGS4 to the 360...despite it's inferior DVD9 setup.

No matter how much the sony fans are trying to spin, the fact remains that the 360 just keeps pulling away from the PS 3.

When PS 3 launched XBOX 360 had about 5 mil installed base worldwide. Now after 2 1/2 years the gap is at 8 mil so guess what - PS ain't winning jack sh!t - not on the hardware front and definitely not on the software front (one game in the top 20 during the busiest shopping season WTF?)

To sum it up PS 3 is firmly in 3rd for the time being, see you next year (again and again and again just like in all these past years LOL.

Okay to sum it up for you... know 5 people with multiple 360's (2 of them with 3 consoles and 3 of them with 2 consoles), if that is true without insinuating that Microsoft is messing with any figures, if that is the general rule for most "Hardcore" gamers, how far may Microsoft actually be ahead?

That is not to take anything away from Microsoft because of them PS3 owners are getting decent games (you know trying to keep up?) Microsoft are doing well and the price cut has done them wonders, but the figures will always be a little sketchy at best IMO.

People forget that the PS3 did not ship in Europe until the following March and other parts of the world were waiting until the summer.

The 360 has played all of its trump cards: It has released a year early, It has released its final, full Halo release, has used up its deep price cut maneuver, and the graphics have reached their peak with Gears of war 2. The ps3 has been keeping up with the 360 for the past 2 years and has yet to show any of its trump cards.

The Ps3 has not yet had a deep price cut, it's obvious that there will be one this year, hopefully with the lowest model down to $299, which is still well above the price of the 360 and Wii, so there will be another opportunity in the future for another price cut bombshell. Sony has yet to release Gran Turismo 5, which is Playstation's best selling game series ( GT 3 A-spec alone has sold as much as Halo 1 and 2 combined last generation), you can believe people will buy the console for that title alone. Because Playstation hardware is more future proof, it will be on the market longer than any other console this generation. PS3 will just begin to show its true graphics and processing power this year, starting with Killzone 2. Even with this game, it has been said that games in the future can surpass it.

There are still 100 million + consoles to be sold this generation, in comparison to the amount of consoles sold last generation. so this war is still years away from over.

Why would 100million people buy an expansive console for just that one title (GT5)? Aren't there cheaper alternative that also have good games. Wii is like the PS2 now. Not 360 or PS3. I don't see casual gamers jumping on the PS3 bandwagon anytime soon because it is alot more expansive than it's competitors. If it becomes alot cheaper, probably.

Out side of the fanboy war, People only see that there are 3 systems that play GAMES and that 2 of them are cheaper than the other big black one, which do you think they gonna pick up?

Why would anybody buy a 360 for halo when they could have got a wii for cheaper? (just remember that in 2007 the 360 was more expensive, and no one plays halo for single player, so you need a hard drive, don't even argue that.) The quality of games on the wii just isn't there. The games aren't challeging enough for people to play them longer than a few hours.

Yes there is a new casual crowd that the wii has tapped into, but I don't believe that this crowd bought a console last generation. This is an entirely new market that nintendo created, and that is just wonderful, but it won't effect the HD consoles too much. The 360 has already sold past the original xbox even with the wii in the market and has at least one more year in the market.

You asked a alot of questions, but i can't answer them. I said that only time will tell who will lead and who chases. If Nintendo of all people can pass Microsoft with their 1 year headstart, then PS3 can do it as well, and believe that that fact scares the crap out of MS! My whole point was that to call this war over with sony as the "loser" is completely retarded because no one will be dropping out of this race for at least a couple years more, with the ps3 having 8 good years left in her.

Your right. We cant play Blu-Ray movies on the 360. What is I gonna do? Oh thats right, I forgot. I bought my 360 to play videogames. I am pretty sure that the 3 year library plus additional games to be released this calendar year will keep me plenty busy. But I appreciate your concern.

the ps3 is not flopping, nor will it die and go away.
But it is nt doing as well as the 360 at this moment nor anywhere as well as the wii. Its doing great on its own considering the higher price but in all honesty its not doing that well. Its not flopping by any means but it will get picked on more becuase they should be in first place, they are sony, ps1 and ps2 should have secured them at least second place and thats a bit off now.

One thing to take away from the "X system led the way for most of the year" is that it doesn't matter if you lead the race all the way up to the end, the one that crosses the finish line first wins. So 4 months essentially wiped out the lead for the battle for second place.

As far as the race goes, the Wii won 2008. Just like it won 2007.

Nothing in this console race will catch the Wii, and will probable out sell both systems but you got to relise that gamers buy PS3 and 360, everyone else buys a Wii.

Personally I own a Wii, I played it and liked it but after a while the novelty died off and it now resides in my younger sisters room for a downgraded form of Rock Band.

I find it funny that VGChartz is bad when it is anti-PS3 but it is perfectly acceptable when it is pro-PS3. The PS3 clearly is not a flop, but it certainly hasn't lived up to the reputation that previous generations of PlayStation have set for the brand. Comparing PS2 to PS3 will show that.

Although I understand your comment, please don't' forget when the ps2 was catching heat about putting a so-called cheap dvd drive in it's system. Also, did you remember the ps2 launch lineup? All they really had was madden, ssx (One of the most underrated games of all time) a cheap track and field game, and timesplitters.

Right around year two is when we saw the developers begin to create legends like: Devil may cry, Tekkon, Twisted Metal, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Jak/Daxter, Ratchet/Clank, GT, MGS, and many other games. (At this point these were all Playstation exclusives, which Sony's competition did not produce.) That is the difference between Sony and Msoft...innovation. Killzone 2 will only be trumped by Crysis..(YES, I have played the Beta and everything from AI, Jerry Bruckhiemmer/Michael Bey explosions. sound, to the lighting effects... completely embarrasses any game on the 360, and some on the PC) K2 is only in 720 freaking P!! 360 fans will be ps3 fans by this summer. (Just like I bought a Xbox 1 when I saw/played Halo: Combat Evolved and Chronicles of Riddick.)

People can get as mad as they want, you can't argue with real stats. I'm not talking about watered down data, I mean what this article used with it's argument. I can't stand the 360 because I have had 6 of them! (Believe it or not.)

Msoft brought out a faulty system, one that required three different Core processor chips to fix the RRod and heating problems. (The so-called answer is the "Falcor" chip, I think) 1st was the "Vallahalla" chip, and I forgot the name of the other piece of crap. If anyone thinks I'm lying...look it up. (I'm sure I misspelled the names of the chips, but they did indeed exists) I mean, it's not a mattter if your 360 will RROD, it's WHEN. (That is in regards to the 360's before the latest 60 gig, and most 120 gig's seem to be a lot better BUT still loud as a MACK truck.) People will come back to the ps3 when all the insane games and PSN upgrade are completed this year. In fact, didn't Xbox Live have tons of lag issues in 08? (Gears 2) PSN seems to be ok with FREE online play.

How could the PS3 be loosing money for Sony? The xbox was made for poor people!On the other hand, the PS3 is targeting the highend market. You pay more for it but you get a blu ray player, wifi, internet and of course games! You can also use it as a computer if you install yellow dog linux! No design flaws, no red ring of death, you can hardly listen to the noise of the fans! Jesus, it's almost perfect. And looks very nice in the living room under my 47" LG tv! I'm not trying to say the 360 is bad, because that's common sense, what im trying to say is that if everybody could buy a PS3 they would strait away! lol By the way, the xbox is white cuz it's full of Bill Gate's wan*!

I hate when they compare how many units were sold of each. I hate to bring this up again, but is anyone taking RROD into consideration? My friend is a hardcore 360 gamer, and he's on his fourth 360. Not fourth FIXED, but he's bought four of them. He doesn't like to have to wait for Microsoft to fix it, so he will just buy a new one. I've heard of MANY other 360 owners who do this because they want to PLAY. My friend even got his third one sent to him after buying the fourth one, and the third one came to him broken! Not RROD this time, but the video card blew out on it about 5 min after he turned it on. My friend is a huge, I mean HUGE 360 fanboy, and he's been slowly sliding towards favoring the PS3.

i don't have enough time to look up the actual correct data, but the ps3 sells fine for a 400 dollar console. the ps3 was 600 when i bought mine, and the x360 was 400 when i bought it. the only thing that is making me unhappy about this gen, is that the xbox360 games feel like upgraded ps2 games. the ps3 can not put out their games fast enough. MGS4 and uncharted are exceptional games but not everyone wants a few awesome games over a console that produces many "ok" games. well, maybe me but i am in the minority.

Most people can afford a Ps3 they just choose not to buy one. You act like its a hundred thousand dollars or something. Most people can easily afford one but don't buy one because they would rather save the money and buy a 360.
360 has the games the majority want simple as that. Disagree all you want but the facts say otherwise. The 360 sells more hardware and more games. Don't spout nonsense saying otherwise because the facts are facts.If people wanted a Ps3 they would buy one. They arn't and thats all there is to it.

Actually he is. He plays his xbox on Saturday evenings only. But sending it off for repair was going to take 4 weeks. As thats his only day he gets time for gaming he brought a new one. Its also the only time he gets to really chat to his friends who live away all at once via xbox live.
I have a demanding job also but still have time to play a console, though not a lot.. So you were right in your assumption that his friends are all on xbox live.
I don't watch a lot of tv (maybe an hour or two a week)but when my tv went i brought one the next day. Same thing.
Not everyone on here works at McDonalds you know.

The 2 biggest reasons people say the PS3 doesn't sell as well as they think it should,

1. The PS3 costs more.
2. The Xbox 360 had a one year headstart.

Both are good reasons, but you have to ask, why is this the case? It's not like anyone forced Sony to build an expensive system. Nobody forced them to use Blu-Ray (that is what caused the one year delay). These were things that Sony had control of, it was their console strategy. You can't use a planned strategy as an excuse when it is convenient. Sony felt the price was justified and the system would sell at $599. They also felt Blu0Ray was important enough to include to wait a year to launch. If you feel differently, blame Sony.

Sony needs to reduce costs a bit more and drop the price. This is a tight position for them because they can't drop the price until they start seeing profits on every console sold. In order to do that, they need to bring the costs down drastically first. I really hope they can accomplish this by mid '09.

As long as software sales pick up and production costs come down, Sony will be profitable soon. Once they can be consistantly in the black, they will have room to make a price cut and seek increased sales more agressively. The games division has been in the red for three years now. Sony will not look for a fourth. The price cut will come when it is beneficial to Sony, not the legions of fans around the world that want to see their team win no matter the cost.
