Is Concord already dead before its arrival on PC?

Just a day after its early access beta hit Steam digital storefront, Concord seems to be already failing to attract PC players.

It was dead when it was announced.

KyRo676d ago

I played it for a hour or two. It was better than I was expecting but I can see it getting stale so quickly like so many other Hero based shooters.

It's still baffles me how Factions 2 got canned but this was given the go ahead outside of the very very easy to see MTX potential.

OtterX676d ago

I would have been all over Factions 2. I don't have the slightest interest in Concord. I haven't downloaded the Beta, and don't plan on it.

Charlieboy333676d ago (Edited 676d ago )

Well it shouldn't baffle you. It is well known by now that Factions 2 would have required Naughty Dog's full attention and resources to maintain and update for the foreseeable future......meaning their narrative driven AAA single player games would need to take a back seat. They did not want to go that route and I for one am glad that they decided to cancel Factions 2 for that reason. They thought it was a good idea at the time but then realised it would change their studio too much.

KyRo676d ago

@Charlie no it's not well known. The reason it was canned was because of Bungies input. You really think ND would have created a game and though mid way through "uhhhh, guys how do we maintain this?". Factions 1 still lives on til this day. It seems you just want to disagree to simply disagree lol

Charlieboy333674d ago (Edited 674d ago )

@ Kyro No I am not "simply disagreeing". Factions 1 was just an extra mode tacked onto the single player game. Factions 2 was going to be an ongoing massive online gaas game with narrative elements similar in concept to games like Destiny. Can you see the difference? Bungies input was basically "well you need to do ABC for this to work and be successful in our experience" which is when Naughty Dog realised the scope of everything involved and decided not to continue with it.

The desperation is real when you have to used a close beta to claim a game is dead.

--Onilink--676d ago

Its a preorder only beta (which grants 5 beta codes) that has a concurrent player base of 400 people…

If that doesn’t tell you anything about the lack of interest people have for paying $40 for the game, I’m not sure what else could do it.

Will the free beta get higher numbers? Sure, i’d be surprised if it didnt. But the actual metric for abysmal preorder numbers is still there and getting high player counts during a free beta doesn’t necessarily translate to people actually wanting to pay $40 for the game

Redemption-64676d ago

Yes, we can judge it by it closed beta numbers on steam alone. Can I get the numbers on Playstation too or should we say those are abysmal too?

--Onilink--676d ago

@Redemption

Please read back the title of the article for me and next time, make sure to pay extra attention to the very last word…

Then come and tell me what I’m supposed to make of your response

-Foxtrot676d ago

Didn’t we all literally do this with Suicide Squad, Anthem, The Avengers, Babylon’s Fall so on?

No one batted an eyelid then but now it’s unheard of and wrong

Redemption-64676d ago

No, just you and your ilk. You all did the same for Helldivers 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and Midnight suns. Funny how people get triggered over, wait to see more or actually play the game to before hating.

-Foxtrot676d ago (Edited 676d ago )

Ooo someone’s got their panties in a bunch

Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t even a live service game so…

Yet you want to use the word triggered when..:well here you are

EternalTitan676d ago

Oh no,
What do you have to use to claim a game is dead?

Redemption-64676d ago

Maybe wait for the game to actually release? But thag might be too much for some people, so hey, let's use the closed beta numbers. All the same right?

CrimsonWing69676d ago

I mean how many of these are there going to be that can only survive with constant users playing and dumping money into MTX’s? There’s already a couple more popular already with major support. It’s just hard to think this game that hasn’t established a strong following is going to successfully add to that list. If you ask me, it’s just another drop in the bucket.

GhostScholar676d ago

Yes. Not even the ponies want it.

TwoPicklesGood676d ago

I'm enjoying it so far but they are going to have to put in work if they want to keep gamers long term. It's definitively fun.

Just like Concord, Highguard is checking out; will Marathon go the same way?

Story Mode on why live service games can't expect to thrive on just competence, that they need something more. In the case of Marathon, "With Bungie at the helm, the same Bungie that defined not one but two generations of gaming — with Halo in 2001 and Destiny 2 in 2017 — ‘just another extraction shooter’ isn’t going to cut it.

Bungies in for a world of hurt. These companies just never seem to learn.

I think it'll get a month or two before it disappears... We don't need a 3rd Halo esque game. We already got Halo and Destiny

-Foxtrot75d ago

Probably not as fast but it will eventually

It seems it will have its dedicated hardcore fanbase but as soon as the next shiny GaaS game is out they’ll move on or go back to the one they were already playing for months

Redemption-6474d ago

The hate for this is so forced. Saw some people being triggered the game has a positive rating on steam. Marathon doesn't need very high players to be successful. It needs a consistent player base. For example, look at a game like Warframe. Within the last 3 years, the game normally gets between 50K-70K on steam a day and has only gone above 15OK 3 times in 6 years. I seriously feel like this game doing well long-term might put some very miserable gamers on suicide watch.

CrimsonIdol74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

It's not hate that's killing these games, it's apathy. Nobody gives a shit or is asking for Concord, Marathon, etc. the crux is no-one cares, so it won't make the money wasted on it and it will fail. I'll admit I quite liked Marathon as an IP but any nostalgia or goodwill towards that was lost the moment I saw the visual diarrhea on display in that first trailer.

Redemption-6474d ago

Nobody gives a shit, yet a bunch snowflakes do nothing but keep hating, funny how works. They people who supposedly don't care about it, cry about them the most. You never asked for any of the games that exist. They were made. You didn't ask for Destiny, Warframe, Witcher, GOW, TLOU, GTA, Expedition 33, Arc, Zelda or a majority of gamed that exist. Devs make the games they think people might like, most, especially indies fail, but some find a base and become successful, even if for a little bit.

It used to be entertaining watching hiw easily triggered games make some people. Now it's just pathetic. This type of hate I am referring to is not exclusive to live service games. GOY is a single-player game, yet we all saw the hate from a certain group of gamers. Bet these same gamers will be ready to start their hate campaign when the new naughty dog gets gameplay. Those same gamers already started attacking Wolverine.

The desire to constantly keep hating on almost every other game be it single-player or live service games will have more negative impact on games than some studios known for making live service games making more live service games

Again, nobody cares, except for those who constantly cry about it.

Michiel198974d ago

@redemption oh no, people attacked a game that hasn't released yet, does that bother you? kinda hypocritical to call other people snowflakes then. I don't get why people are so bothered by it, it shouldn't change your enjoyment or view of the game at all. You think no one ever said anything negative about Ratchet and Clank, or Sunset overdrive, or spiderman and according to you thats way worse than shitty live service games, but what did actually change for Insomniac? thats right, nothing! if the creators arent bothered by it, you probably shouldnt be either.

TriniOutsider74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

Really it's not hate? Alt-right gaming YouTube channels have been all over Marathon, the Destiny fanbase, and the Arc Raiders fanbase. All want it to fail, why because the colors are too bright and aren't casual enough?

Y'all gotta let go of Concord as well. The gaming community loves chasing games that are long and gone. Almost like they're chasing down an ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend.

CrimsonIdol74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

Ooof you guys are so sensitive. I mean, believe whatever I guess. I've no horse in this race but I'm pretty certain it's going to fail. Don't hate me for truths you find hard to swallow. I'm not saying there isn't hate for this game. I'm saying that's not what will kill it. You just need to make money with whatever supposed market there is for this. That won't happen.

CrimsonIdol74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

"They people who supposedly don't care about it, cry about them the most"
"Again, nobody cares, except for those who constantly cry about it."
...he says, while crying about it. You're absolutely right in a completely un-self-aware kind of way.

Multiplayer people may care. I’m a single player gamer so yeah I don’t care about these games. Casuals are a different story though. If a game gets popular they’ll jump in.

hombreacabado74d ago

its going to go free to play in a matter of months

74d ago
Profchaos74d ago

Yeah that's what i was thinking.

it's not for me but i think it will make a dedicated fanbase happy for a long time

MinnesotaFatts74d ago

The hate is justified; the people managing these companies want us to consume whatever bullshit they drop at our feet whenever the fiscal quarter turns over. Marathon's problem is Highguard's problem is Concord's problem is AAA gaming's problem right now: the c-suite suits WHO DON'T PLAY VIDEO GAMES are chasing the lowest common denominator, applying business theory to an inherently artistic medum. They all want a formula to catch lightning in a bottle **without letting the artists make art**. There's no creative vision or passionate pursuit behind games like Marathon, it's all spreadsheets and focus groups and what's charting on Twitch or YouTube.

Gunplay is solid for this game and has been what I've been looking for in awhile. But everything else comes off as mid/nothing special to me.

Levii_9274d ago

I hate these types of games so i’m not the best judge of them but what i saw online was one of the most boring shit i’ve seen in a long time. Concord and Highguard looked more fun to me.

BAD MODERATION FROM N4G - fair but humorous and critical comments were hidden with the Spam label being incorrectly used for the cover up.

DarXyde187d ago

It feels more like them being bitter that no one supported it, but maybe it's me.

I'd appreciate them bringing back Warhawk—sadly I don't see that happening.

hombreacabado186d ago

hell yeah bring back warhawk. i thought helldivers 2 would fill that itch but not quite. that to me was the funnest online experience i ever had on playstation. last of us online was also a fun time but warhawk was quite cool made so many friends on that.

DarXyde185d ago

You and me both, mate. I'm totally a single player gamer through and through, but there was something about Warhawk that was absolutely captivating. Could play for hours.

Gamersunite880187d ago

Oh lord. This is hilarious. It's not Nintendo doing it this time. Lol

Lexreborn2187d ago

Did people really think they would let people potentially profit off of what THEY said was trash? It’s actually funny people even tried this

Commentby187d ago

The Sony overlords these people worship

StormSnooper187d ago

You gotta admit it’s weird that anyone out there wants to play it considering we were told it was shit.

Fishy Fingers187d ago

Profit? Hosting community servers would cost the mod team money, not make it :/

StormSnooper187d ago

Yeah, now they like it? Make up your minds people.

jambola187d ago

The people who liked it like it
The people who didn't like it, didn't
They made up their minds, its just different people with different views, I can't believe i have to explain this

InUrFoxHole187d ago

The overwhelming majority of people think its a dumpster 🔥. Even sony can make trash my man. I personally liked it but I also liked the last 2 medal of honors and people didn't like those either

franwex187d ago

Wow. Can’t have it cannibalize sales of the official game, right?!

Former Firewalk Studios Developer On Concord: "It Was The Most Beautiful Car That We Crashed"

A former Firewalk Studios dev called the canceled multiplayer first-person hero shooter, Concord, "the most beautiful car that we crashed."

twistedvoxel.com
Relientk77259d ago

The most ugly car crash you mean, especially the characters. The game was a generic ripoff of Guardians of the Galaxy and Overwatch. It was awful stop trying to defend it. It is dead and I hope it never comes back. The "best" part of the game was probably that it actually ran.

Alos88259d ago

They went in thinking it would be automatically successful because it was a Sony game, but in the end it didn't have the audience they expected.

Notellin259d ago

Because PlayStation is just a third party machine for the next Madden and COD to the majority of owners.

Cacabunga259d ago

Beautiful or not, it’s gamers who decide and not developers. If gamers criticize something the devs better listen.
In the end we crushed those gaas plans.

GamingExplained101258d ago

There's no automatic success, no one is that naive.
They thought their ugly characters were going to reshape in people's minds what they think is attractive. This is why the ugly female developers keep making ugly characters in games that resemble them ie. Spiderman writer inserting herself as Mary Jane.
Women think status is attractive, so they insert themselves in status positions in media, games etc and believe men will find them more attractive because of that status. Instead, we just don't buy their games, since men are not attracted to status.

RaidenBlack259d ago

But as far I can recall, it had pretty good launch performance and minimal bugs

INMATEofARKHAM259d ago

Hard to have bad performance when no one plays and the servers never take a load...

Krablante259d ago

O please give me a break 🤣🤣 you made a turd. Open up your nostrils and smell it. You’re not going to learn from your horrible mistakes with this attitude

Notellin259d ago

Muhammad Ali Bari is the worst AI generator of articles in all of gaming.

CrimsonWing69259d ago

Y’all might want to start listening to your consumers before going through with things. Or at least have a finger on the pulse of what the people you’re trying to sell a game to are wanting to fork money over.

dveio259d ago

There can be a lot trash talk and logical criticsm and a game can still sell millions. Concord though didn't pass its test of release.

That's tough, that's unforgiving and it hurts.

But it had its chance. It should be benficial for everyone to dust it off and to just move on.
