He's right. The Ps3 is a huge failure compared to the sucess that the Ps3 and PSX held. It is selling ok but it needs a price drop quickly. Sony has bundled every big game they have with the console and still hasn't chipped away at Ms' lead. The year of the Ps3 will be 2010 mark my words. I expect GOW3 to slipp to 2010 as will GTA 5, MAG and a bunch of other projects. They will be outsold in 2009.

a $100 price cut could make a HUGE change to the game industry. Unlike the PS3, Microsoft have very little further they can go to bring in new hardware sales by cutting their prices.

This CLOWN actually believes the 360 is a better value if it's the same price as the PS3? That's ridiculous. He's blowing smoke up your asses, people, everyone knows that isn't true. The PS3 has kept pace with the 360 for two years at a much higher price. If the PS3 and 360 had been the same price all this time, you bet your ass that the PS3 would be killing the 360.

He even says that they charge for Xbox Live because they don't believe they should charge people for something they won't use, making the insinuation that Sony is charging for the PSN via the extra cost of their console. Well, what happens when the PS3 comes closer to the 360 in price, then what? Then you're NOT being charged extra for it. You're paying extra for Blu-Ray and Wi-Fi, how's that? If the PS3 has a 100 dollar price cut, then what do you get with each?

You match up the 300 dollar versions of the two systems:

PS3 would cost the same, but you get 20 GB more hard drive space, blue-tooth accessory support, blu-ray support, wi-fi internet connection, and free lifetime PSN service. That's a helluva lot more value. The only course of action possible for the 360 would be another price drop, otherwise it WILL start to lose its lead.

Why do about 3/4 of Microsoft's public relations press statements talk about the PS3? Are they secretly afraid of their competition or something? They keep talking on and on about how the 360 is doing better than the PS3 and yet, strangely, seldomly mention anything they're doing themselves. "Xbox 360 WILL outsell PS3 worldwide this generation" and all that, blah blah blah. It's no doubt to anyone with an objective opinion that once the price of the PS3 (which already has a faster adoption rate) drops, it will begin selling like hotcakes. I just wish MS would talk more about their own console and things they're offering (in which the list in 2009 could be a tad beefier) more than beating out the competition.

Everybody seems to think Sony is going to drop price. But now there seems to be rumors that Rockstar might release GTA V this year. Now last I heard Sony is due some exclusive love from Rockstar in one way or another and if this game is it and does make it out this year along with the already mentioned excluisves the PS3 has (plus the price drop) it's going to be a sad year in Seattle.

The only point here is that there is only word to describe a price drop to $299 for the PS3: massacre. The 360 would be murdered if a price drop occured. Smart of Aaron though, he's putting the pressure on Sony to price drop and the media is following suit, just look at all these new price drop articles about the PS3. Aaron is playing a clever mind trick here, he says the PS3 will get a price drop and you know what that means? People are going to hold out until the "price drop" and sales will lower.

He (Greenberg) is making a mistake, though. A rumor about a PS3 price cut (within reach) will let people wait. No matter if they want to go with a 360 or PS3. I could imagine, Sony won't drop the price before they are ready (from their cost point of view). Especially in these rough times for a company to loose money is painful. Selling less with profit (and I think the PS3 is on about par now, cost wise and makes a profit as a whole in the gaming sector incl. PS2, PSP and licenses) today is something which you'd prefer instead of selling a lot with a loss. KZ2 as a blockbuster will sell systems - with or without price cut. It would be stupid to lower the price now.

Fact is there are people who are usually dead set on purchasing a particular console that aheed's to their needs specifically. Some people don't want all the technological gadgetry that comes with the PS3 and just want to play next-gen games on their Xbox 360.

Other people might just be waiting for a price drop. I don't know if they will keep the edge but I predict strong sales for Xbox 360 regardless.

I would agree to that, if its still $200. But for freaking $100 bucks more you'd get a 80G HD, WiFi and a blue ray player ? Nobody can be that dumb to not see that all this is far more then the $100 price diff. Heck, that even puts low risk on getting a cheapo $500 credit card, just to make this work. Without droping the Arcade for another (at least) $50, I don't see how M$ can compete here.

That is, would Sony decide to lower the PS3 by $100.

I think the PS3 will sell great this year. There are a lot of PS3 exclusives I am excited for, XB360 not much excites me so far.

I think after the release of KZ2, that a few weeks after they should lower the price, as I think that they will have some increased sales due to KZ2 and then the lower price will keep momentum going afterwards.

Sad, really sad. Just concentrate on getting some great games out, of which so far I only know of 2 this year.

I agree with Greenberg simply because Sony refuses to cut prices on, well, basically ANYTHING with there name on it. Its time for Sony to realize that to make money, you first have to lose a little. i believe that Sony can catch up and possible pass 360 if they do a few thing. A) Cut your damn prices. B) Put out more games already. C) Stop acting like a power house and realize that you cant succeed in business if you refuse to give a little.

If Sony does this, then they may have a shot at a comeback, but not at there current pace and strategy...

Wasn't it last summer there was a $50- $150 price different and the PS3 outsold it? If I were Greenburg I wouldn't be giving the PS3 the credibly by saying it nearly every other word at his mouth. The PS brand may not be moving units but the name alone with a nice price point could have Greenburg scrambling for the 720. Nintendo and Playstation have there feet cemented in the video game industry the XBOX is just riding the wave of releasing early but as time go on and price point adjust and the power of consoles, and first party exclusives comes out that is where the real winner will emerge.

Nintendo and Sony dont have take shots at each other because they're veterans in the gaming industry, Microsoft is the underdog here and they have to talk themselves up to gain credibility which they don't have yet, How do you think the great Ali treated his opponents? You have to see yourself dominating and think big over opponents if you want to win, You have to see a future that doesn't exist to be able to reach it, The fact that they always mention Sony in their statements shows that they respect Sony as their strong competitor, They may not directly say it or praise Sony but they are acknowledging them, Don't you know that in business, it's rather unwise to mention your competitor's name even if you're bashing them because it simply means you're respecting them enough to give them free publicity? That's the reason why those Mac vs PC ads aren't very effective, Sony never ever mentions Microsoft, They never acknowledge their opponents, They need to do that, And it's that kind of thinking that got them where they are today, Remember when Kirai said "We don't care about our competition" "The first 5 million will buy the ps3 even if it doesn't have games" and c0cky things like that? Statements like that is what caused them to not be able to quickly dominate the market like they always have in the past, Now they're sharing ps2 gamers with Nintendo and Microsoft and that shouldn't be the case, It's very clear now the Microsoft is stealing a rather significant number of former playstation gamers especially since they've already surpassed the original xbox installbase in such a short time, Sony shouldn't allow this to happen, They shouldn't let all those years of hardwork to invade the marketshare go down the drain

That's just MS tactics. They try to lure Sony into a price war. M$ knows to win battles on the cash front. They have deep pockets and if you really want to compete here, you better have a full bank account. But the price war is what eventually killed Sega's Dreamcast. Sony is not that stupid. Been there, done that. I mean, they have been around for quiet some time now. I think M$ is just pissed that they simply ignored the 360s price drop an go with their own strategy.

I get so annoyed at people saying that the 360 is half the cost of the PS3. That is true only for the hard drive less, stripped down, pretty much useless 360 version. I don't beleive the elite 360 feature wise is comparable to the PS3, but at least that's closer. And something else noone talks about. Which console is the only console that allows you to purchase an off the shelf hard drive and upgrade your system. Not only does it not void your warranty, but they provide you instructions on how to do it. That was a master stroke by Sony. Last time I checked you could get 1/2 TB for around $150. Those kinds of decisions are the reason Sony gets my money.

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
