umm is 726k units bad for a console that is twice the price of its competitor during a recession?! and besides, Sony made more profit overall then MS considering they moved a total of 2.2 million playstation hardware units all combined and also considering they are making big profits now on the PSP and PS2

Sony did outstanding if you ask me.. Like blademask said, the 360 sold pretty much the same amount of consoles last year at double the price and now its half the price it was last year and only managed to sell 180k more units then last year while the PS3 is the same price and still double the price and only sold 30 thousand units lest than last year.

Also sony moving a total of 2.2 million playstation brand consoles just for the month in december in the US alone is HUGE.. I mean you have to imagine with Sony making big profits now on the PSP and PS2 and breaking even on the PS3, i wouldnt be suprised if their console units total brought in more profit then the 360

My 2 cents: a console sells about the same ammount in one year but is hundreds of dollars more obviously in my book its the ps3. But in terms of market share? its a wash done.

Sony is definitely in trouble if this continues but they can look to one thing as a positive. Look at what each console sold both years..

2007 Year End Numbers:

360 4.618 mil
PS3 2.555 mil

2008 Year End Numbers:

360 4.735 mil
PS3 3.544 mil

The X360 had a $100 price cut and only outsold itself by a lil over 100k from last year. Sony sitting at the same exact price was able to jump almost 1 million units sold. That's the only positive for them.

Going forward Sony needs to drop the high end SKU, cut price to $299 and up the HDD size in that to 60GB instead of 40 (I'm sure they could upgrade the HDD for next to nothing). Go forward with just one SKU; a $299 60GB PS3.

An entry level 360 is half the price of a PS3 and sold twice as much in December. That's about right.

I expected more from the 360 and the ps3 did what I expected it to. I'm sure Sony and Nintendo will be happy with how they did, and Microsoft will be satisfied but will feel they could've done better. The amount of ads over here in Ireland is insane but I haven't seen one ps3 ad.

My take on this (sure, why not), I think the 360 price cut was a little to late. While I think the 360 sold phenomenal over the holiday season it was just enough to catch up to PS3's over all sales. The PS3 could surprisingly keep its last years sales goal with a marginal drop, despite the increased pressure created by the 360 price drop. After the holiday season it seams the number of sold machines is leveling out again, with a pending PS3 price cut (if at all) and PS3's big hitters coming as early as February, 360's advantage might be compensated again pretty soon. A little to late. As expected, though. We will see this comes middle of the year. Or maybe not.

Considering the current economic status, I find those numbers to be really good across all platforms. As one of the worst holiday shopping seasons in recent history, it seems people still love their video games. This should help keep all platforms afloat and ensure competition stays around. Good news for gamers.

For me all I care about is PS3 + 360 sales versus Wi. Its a matter of hardcore gamer preservation. I don't want Sony and MS to start catering to my grandmother! Sony hardware doing well. Price cut worked for Microsoft. 09 should be interesting.

Considering many a ps3 fan will say the unit sold well in spite of being double the price of the 360. Yet we don't really know if the sales of 360's were all arcades or not. you see simply because one is offered at half the cost doesnt mean it was the one selling the most.

I am sure MS and sony know which sku's were the big sellers. Sony has 2 and MS has 3 to try and tally up.

With nintendo it is obvious which sku sold the most considering they only have 1.

I am interested in knowing if more pro's were sold than arcades.

Well good numbers but at 199 for its entry level model it should be a concern to MS that the only way they are sustaining console sales from year to year is through price drops and not just any price drop but a drop to mass market price as this will give them less room to maneuver with regards to price drop in the future.

Wii. Although its still early days in this console war the wii is looking unstoppable.

2008 has truly been the year of the Xbox 360 with so many award winning titles and AAA features bringing a whole new demographic of consumers to the Xbox 360 platform, while the PS3 continues to languish in last position with another year of disappointments and failures the PS3 will find it difficult to stay relevant in the coming years as a platform as 3rd party developers abandon it for the Xbox 360.

I remember all the fandroids on this site rejoicing about their prospects for 2008, saying that this was 'the year of the PS3' but in the end this amounted to more broken dreams and promises which has come to signified the disastrous and morally bankrupt PlayStation brand.

The PS3 has seen significant erosion of its marketshare worldwide to the Xbox 360 and Wii, the two powerhouse brands which continue to grow from strength to strength while the PS3 struggles and languishes like an old mule that is no longer up to the job.

2009 will be another disastrous year for the PS3, and yet another victorious year for the Xbox 360 with even more AAA titles and features on the way for the Xbox 360 ecosystem.

As for the PS3, Sony it's time to put this mule down, otherwise it will take the whole farm with it.

How can sony fans say that sony is not in trouble ? Sony has been selling less PS 3's in last 2 months (the busiest shopping season nov - dec) then it did a year ago same time.

It is the only current console on the market to see a decline in the busiest shopping season compared to '07 for crying out loud !

Sales are already dropping off after only 2 years on the market (hype train has run out of steam and Sony out of promises).

If the PS3 still cost $400 next year, and it sold 700-800,000 in December 09, would people still say it sold good for a $400? The bigger picture here is ofcourse install base gap in North America isn't closing in Sony's favour, something many here predicted at the beginning of 08.

A $299 PS3 this year will sell better, but to close the gap it will have to do astonishingly well each month.

Pretty good numbers all around. Surprised that the Wii didn't sell more in NA for December but still damn good. My sister's significant other brought her a 360 arcade with Viva Pinata so i knew the console was going to sell pretty damn good this holiday.

Actually, I am only kidding, but all I have to say is that the NPDs bring out the best in everyone, it's the only reason I buy popcorn now, popcorn and Advil(because of the headache inducing laughter) are the two things needed for NPD time.

PS3 => 449 * 726,000 = 325,974,000

Thats the Average sales(considering the average console price of different SKU's for both companies) ......

Considering that the the 360's boost is due to a price cut, it becomes interesting if we assume the lowest price point of both the consoles. Sony on the other hand, had to bank on its 'momentum' (whatever that means)

XBOX 360 => 199 * 1,440,000 = 286,560,000
PS3 => 399 * 726,000 = 289,674,000

The XBOX might have made a tad bit more revenues than PS3 which would have been more than accounted for by the PS2 / PSP sales.

So, for XBOX haters => MS's Gaming division is doing awesome.
for PS3 haters => Sony's Gaming division is not 'dying'. If anything its doing better than MS's

And it would be interesting to see what strategy the XBOX pursues to counter that PS3 drops down to 299$, probably in the next quarter.....

All in all Gaming industry is well and flourishing, even in this screwed economy.Good news for the developers out there.....
