Why would Sony issue a demo for the potential system-selling "Killzone 2" only to people who have pre-ordered the game? Sony explained their unusual strategy to MTV Multiplayer, and dated a version of the demo that's for the rest of us.
What's a game demo good for? Showing off a game before it's released? Helping consumers decide whether to buy the game it's part of? Spreading buzz?
If these are a company's priorities, conventional wisdom is that a publisher releases a demo far and wide across Xbox Live and/or PlayStation Network. Really huge games, arguably, don't need a demo. So there was no demo for "Grand Theft Auto IV" or "Gears of War 2." But a less popular brand or an unproven one, say "Skate 2" or "Too Human" will get a demo. So to do some majors, like "Resident Evil 5."
And then there's the case of "Killzone 2," the lavish, graphically ambitious first-person shooter slated for February 27 release that could become the defining game of its genre for the PS3. It's getting a demo, but the demo is only being issued as a pre-order incentive for consumers at GameStop - or so has been reported up until now.
Why would Sony do this?

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.
1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland
I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.
Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.
Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!
The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer
Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱
The Amsterdam-based studio reflects on its humble beginnings, beloved franchises, and growth through the years.
Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.
32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III
Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.
I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.
Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.
The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.
"Killzone 2, for example, will have a downloadable demo launch in North America the week that the game is launching, for consumers who prefer that option."
Well, that's good. So people who are on the fence (will there actually be any??) can try this out the week of.
Per the article: It’s slated for release as a download to the PlayStation Network on PS3 for Thursday, February 26, a day before the game’s official release date.
again i say negating the need for the gamestop pre order. unless you are truly tapping your veins to play the game. (i am too) but pre ordering with gamestop for a demo that will come out anyway and for a game that i'm buying anyway. seems kind of silly to me.
i pre ordered with amazon.com to get the HOME Killzone 2 Outfits. plus i have a friend at gamestop who hooked me up with a demo code for KZ2 :)
February 19, but at least there is a public demo.
I don't agree with GameStops practices so really didn't plan on buying Killzone there just to get the demo.
Amazon, on the other hand will get my cold hard ca...credit card.
(Gets card from freezer with no explanation of why it's there whatsoever...types Amazon.com...ever so gently...ever so gently...)
Hmmm....I still have a $5 pre-order for something at GameStop. I wonder if I just switched that over if I'd get that demo-code anyway?
Yes . . . Yes . . . finally I can apply the Finger Pyramid of Evil Contemplation toward GameStop.
Finally...
am i the only one who think that stephen totilo, the guy on the mtv gaming blog is a 360 fanboy? most of the time when i read his bs blog he seem to be harsh on the ps3
(maybe its just me)
GTA IV and Gears 2 were well established franchises. These games pass the "Frat boy test." Meaning you can ask any meat-head in college and they can tell you all about these games.
Killzone cannot pass the Frat boy test. While the series is by no means a "no name" franchise, it certainly does not have the millions of zealot followers like the previous mentioned.
Killzone 2 will be the first step into the canon for most. It HAS to be advertised to the nines, which means it needs a damn demo out NOW! I'm so pissed at Sony's arrogance right now...
