Sony CES 3D tech already outdated, something better coming

During CES, Ars was shown a "great" 3D display at Sony's massive booth. While the Sony representative wouldn't tell ars how the effect was achieved, a well-placed source just passed ars some information about what technology the screens used to show those PS3 games in three dimensions, and then explained why it will never see the light of day. What will we see in the future? Standardized, full-resolution 3D displays.

"The LCDs Sony is using use a technique called 'Micropolarization' (often abbreviated as Xpol)," Ars was told. "Put simply, the display is layered with a polarizing filter that actually polarizes every other horizontal line of the display to 'spin' the light in a different direction. The glasses you're wearing (provided by RealD) only accept light spinning in one direction to the eye it is covering. That's how each eye gets a different angle and, ultimately, how your brain interprets 3D."

DOOOOOMED

XD

for the sake of my bubbles, im just kidding.. christ. u guys are like pitbulls sometimes.

Lord Anubis6340d ago

Nah, sony know their technology better than anyone else.

gamesmaster6340d ago

i dont really see this tech taking off anytime soon, not unless we can have it on our existing hdtv's. which most of us have recently purchased.

sony will stay on top of this until the times ready and the tech is right.

Aaron Greenterd6340d ago

That's weird. For some reason there was another company who has outdated tech, and it wasn't Sony.

Gosh, I just can't remember what company that was....it's right on the tip of my tongue! I remember because they are using old media that scratches the discs, and the tech gets really hot and fails. Man what was the name of that company?...I'm drawing a blank here.

Ah well it will come to me at some point. But I swear it's like right under my nose....

Harry1906340d ago

Not sure if you really read the article, but it appeared that Sony itself was going to provide this new standard albeit in a different form than the demo they showed at CES. We must read carefully.

nordberg6339d ago

We don't need a better tech for now (which probably need a new TV :(). The CES game a played look stunning in 3D (Grand Turismo Prologue and Wipeout). I want a patch for the two games in my home as soon as possible. By the way, i also played Killzone 2, not bad but only 2D, seems outdated with all the 3D game at CES :).

NVidia also have many PC games in 3D at CES: Burnout Paradise, Farcry, World of Warcraft. Intel have stunning jacket which give you sensation when others shot you on the body (played with far cry 2).

gaffyh6339d ago

Anyone else think that this story only got into the top stories list because it seems like it's a negative Sony article?

marinelife96339d ago

It's going to be tough to convince people to plop down another $2,000 for a decent HDTV with 3D technology. Some will do it however.

Sony pushing the 3D technology they showed at CES doesn't sell any new TV's for them. They'll push the new standard so CE companies can sell more hardware.

Mozilla896339d ago

According to the article this tech will be outdated when Sony themselves come out with something better they've been working on.

Do we really need 3D in our homes right now? I get enough of a headache grinding on Fallout for 8 hours, don't know if I need VATS in my eye.

Granted, hollywood somehow miraculously decided to back a format that most theaters and all homes are not equipped for, but people in general are just now beginning to switch over to HD screens, do we really need to outdate them any time soon?

Aclay6340d ago (Edited 6340d ago )

"Do we really need 3D in our homes right now?"

No, we don't "need" 3-D, but it sure as hell would be cool to have it.

When you look at the products that Sony produces, they aren't about giving people what they need, they give you more than what you want and they give you stuff you don't really "need" because that's what Sony is all about.

evrfighter6339d ago

http://www.nvidia.com/objec...

tech already exists and fallout 3 is on that list.

IcarusOne6339d ago (Edited 6339d ago )

Since the inception of television, movie theaters have always worked to separate themselves from TV. At first they did this with color. Then they did it with surround sound. Now - with home theaters as advanced as they are - 3D is the new trend in a time-honored and typically successful tradition of convincing people to go to the movies.

I for one will be giving this tech the benefit of the doubt.

Godmars2906340d ago (Edited 6340d ago )

Sony shows off 3D, now days after we get an article that says "something else better" is coming without saying what it is exactly to steal Sony's thunder.

If Sony can pull it off with current versions of HDTVs, versus some 5-10 ten years down the line tech that does it itself at 2-3 times the current costs while needing another infrastructure overhaul, which do you think people are going to get. If they get it at all?

At least Sony's offering a taste of what the tech could be. Which is what it or a later advanced version would need to establish itself.

Voiceofreason6339d ago

According to Sony it is already here in the PS3..

ActionBastard6340d ago

Of course it is! Everything Sony does is outdated or a copy or a fraud or an in justice to the American gamer or killed Caylee and on and on and on...

Xi6340d ago (Edited 6340d ago )

I mean, just look at how much people bash windows, how they're always being called liars about their sales figues, etc.

ArmrdChaos6339d ago (Edited 6339d ago )

No, the problem is that Sony isn't doing anything new here and they are being proclaimed as technological gods. They have been using the 3D glasses gimmick in movies for years now...regardless the means in which you project it.

You want to impress me...make it work WITHOUT the glasses and eye strain...then you got something.

And how about the arrogant title for it? REAL 3D...like what they are doing is anymore impressive than what NVIDIA showed. So everyone else is just BS 3D? Besides...it isn't even a real 3D projection...just tricks to fool the eye...irony at its best.

Is this tech cool...sure. Is it worth a try...sure. Do they deserve a nobel prize...no. If it were MS tech...most of you would be saying the same thing right now.

Voiceofreason6339d ago

Kinda true. Sony doesnt really do half the stuff you guys give them credit for. Like Cell for example. The only involvement Sony had in Cell was paying the bill. The new Eyetoy features that everyone was so happy about were developed by other companies and Sony bought the rights to use it. Nothing wrong with that as most companies do these things. However that does not mean they invented the product just because they bought the rights to use it.What most of you guys are doing is the same as crediting Dell with creating windows simply because it comes installed on Dell PC's when a person buys one.

sak5006339d ago

NO sony is master of innovation. Just look at motion control sixaxis, hard drive in a console, network capable console, dual analog sticks, camera built-in notebook screen (cough cough asus), HOME a virtual community etc.

novcze6339d ago

^^^ to those three above me, everyone knows that Sony itself didn`t invent every technology they use, but Sony have money to push things mainstream. Exactly how they did it with PlayStation 1 y`know.

Joey Greco RULES6339d ago (Edited 6339d ago )

way to bring in caylee on this. youre worse than nancy grace. lol.

@armedchaos & sak: youre right man. none of these things are new. the "real 3d"(actually RealD) brand is another company(just thought i'd tell you lol) who has been doing 3d for a while now, and has nothing to do with sony. and the technology for 3d w/o glasses exists, just not sure about the eyestrain yet, lol, but its out there, has been for a while now. sony is a great company, but they get too much credit for things they DID NOT CREATE.

@novcze: all the things they were talking about, WERE ALREADY MAINSTREAM.

i smell brownies. mmmmm.

novcze6339d ago (Edited 6339d ago )

2 Joey Greco RULES:
I think my definition of mainstream differ from yours . . . look at motion control in sixaxis or dualshock 3, every sold PS3 have one of them, that is something like >20M of hardware and there is also software for them. Who else made this technology so wide-spread?
Anyway 3D with some glasses on my nose is no-go.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio24d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
