A PS5 Pro Will Feel Extra Unnecessary This Time Around

Forbes writes: "The specs indicate that Sony is at least trying to produce 60 fps on almost all games, and it would of course be the most powerful console on the market when it arrives, as they wouldn’t even bother with it, if not. But this time around, it feels like the PS5 Pro is even more unnecessary than the PS4 Pro was, and it’s going to be an odd release and a tough ask for an upgrade this time around."

mkis007866d ago

Funny how no one says this about graphics cards or CPU's every year. It's literally just releasing a 4080 after releasing a 4060 3 years ago.

SDuck865d ago

A piece of hardware for a computer isn't the same thing as a new console now, is it? You can update your graphics card for whatever reason and still have access to your game library. Same cannot be said with new consoles. Old ones stop getting support and suddenly a PS4 game cannot run on vanilla PS4 because devs only cared about optimizing it for PS4Pro.

RNTody865d ago (Edited 865d ago )

This is BS. The PS4 Pro was an interative upgrade and didn't stop a single game from running on the base model, including cross-gen PS5 releases. But much like any gaming PC, older hardware gets left behind and starts to limp at some point. Consoles are now giving players more options than they ever did to cater to those who want higher fidelity, ray tracing, performance or whatever else. The PS5 Pro will be an interative upgrade much like the PS4 Pro was and will simply unlock higher performance/fidelity with less trade-offs. It won't affect anyone who has a PS5 and intends to keep it. Hopefully it will add benefits like frame rate boost to existing titles, but apart from that it's not going to divide or disrupt the user base.

Cacabunga865d ago

Completely unnecessary.. i cannot believe i will one day ask sony for 1st party games..

fr0sty865d ago

PS5 Pro is needed for enthusiasts, which is what it targets. Those of us who want our PSVR2 games running at native resolution, 120fps, those of us who want ray tracing on every game, those of us who want 4k60 on every game... They can easily squeeze another 15 million sales out of that if they release the Pro this year, just like they did with PS4 Pro. I'll be there on launch day to pick one up, and I'll be gifting my sister my old PS5 along the way.

1Victor865d ago (Edited 865d ago )

@Sdu:”Old ones stop getting support and suddenly a PS4 game cannot run on vanilla PS4 because devs only cared about optimizing it for PS4Pro.”
Sure thing can I get a beer with that disinformation platter?
I never purchased the ps4 pro and won’t buy this ether and all my old and new PS4 games worked just fine and no developer locked their game to the pro model 🤦🏿
.

Edit: Don’t worry I’m sure Xbox will come out with a new series that’ll reclaim “ the most powerful console ever “ title and you’ll be happy 🤣

Exvalos865d ago

You obviously have 0 clue what your talking about. What is your gamertag I need to check to see if you even play games.

jarek98865d ago

Well, starting with the PS4 Pro all PlayStation consoles are backward compatible as well. Considering that the price of the console is similar (or lower) than a price of a new GPU alone, such comparison isn’t far fetched….

mkis007865d ago (Edited 865d ago )

except this "piece" costs more than the whole console. And no games are unsupported; stupid comment

anast865d ago

I think the PS3 was supported for almost 17 years. People still play the PS3.

kayoss864d ago

That piece of computer hardware (graphic card) probably cost more than the ps5 Pro alone.

I don't really agree with this.

A 4080 will still be useful longer term because that's just how PC is. You can get by with a 2080 now in 2024.

A PS5 Pro isn't going to play any PS6 games that are not cross generational. My point is that the PS5 Pro has less utility over time than an RTX card.

Not here to say you cannot or should not buy a PS5 Pro (personally, I'm not interested), but I don't really think it's the same.

babadivad865d ago

1080ti is still a good card.

mkis007865d ago

the 4080 was just an example of my point being new cards release every year but these refreshes have only released once going on twice...4 years after the console.

Sure cards have more utility, but they are outdated on the market way faster than consoles are to each other.

DarXyde865d ago

mkis007,

"Outdated" is a very strong word, mate. Tekken 8's minimum specs with UE5 put it at 1050Ti (released in 2016) and recommended is RTX 2070 (released in 2018). That's a modern game, my friend.

I get that you mean outdated is not obsolete. And I'm really not saying a PS5 Pro is a waste of money. Just that I don't see much equivalence between annual card upgrades and a Pro.

ChasterMies865d ago (Edited 865d ago )

That’s because consoles have generations and PCs have new parts.

itsmebryan865d ago

@mk
Do you own or ever built a gaming PC?

Crows90864d ago

Well that's because it doesn't need to be said. It's common knowledge that it is not necessary to upgrade every 2 or 3 years.

Console gamers are the ones that seem to lag behind and the media sites eat it up as if they're all dumb.

Pro versions of consoles are entirely unnecessary...just like last gen....except for poor Xbox one...that one needed to relaunch itself

Jon61586864d ago

Because a GPU is one component of the system maybe?

Games are struggling to hit 4k and 60fps or 120fps and Ray Tracing is another story. PS5 Pro would help with all the above.

blackblades865d ago

Right, i say wait til its out before talking. Sports analyst say crap all the time and then the game happens and they were wrong.

JackBNimble864d ago

I thought everyone was claiming ray tracing and 4k 60fps on the original ps5 back in the beginning of the gen?

I keep hearing similar claims about fps and all that shit since the ps3 .

You guy's are not going to get high end pc performance on a $400/$500 console. Seems you fans buy into the hype everytime and it never is what they claim

purple101866d ago

No, just no,

Ps5 pro gonnna be legit.

Who’s doubting mark cerny at this point
He’s way more clever than us and has proven to make a good console
He will do it again specially with newer cheaper components as tech moves on every few years or so

Eonjay865d ago

It just sounds like Forbes is trying to cover for Xbox not having an upgrade. I mean the say: "The specs indicate that Sony is at least trying to produce 60 fps on almost all games"

That's the point right there. It's the only reason to upgrade at all, except for the 2TB SSD which is nice by itself.

BTW when the remodel the Series X and add in a larger SSD and nothing else, the same people will call it a must by.

repsahj865d ago (Edited 865d ago )

I am sure they will also make one if Pro sells very well.

crazyCoconuts865d ago

@repsahj - even if the Pro sells well it doesn't mean an XSX Pro would. Based on their numbers, only 25% of their Xbox sales have been XSX vs. XSS, which means there's a relatively small % of Xbox customers willing to pay the premium for an XSX. An even smaller amount would be willing to turn around and get a XSX Pro.
I'd bet there's no XSX Pro in the cards.

jjb1981865d ago

I was totally thinking this same thing. It would be "Essential for the massive library that is Game Pass which was brought to us by Lord Phil". Neither an Xbox One Series X Pro One X or PS5 Pro would be necessary but I would still want both and probably would buy both. I would have loved this generation to just waited a couple more years and pushed hardware that did 4K 60fps on every game no matter what.

-Foxtrot866d ago

Exactly

Developers whined for next gen during the PS4 and Xbox One yet have hardly taken advantage of what we’ve gotten.

Took them years to even let last gen go

When we got the PS4 Pro and the like they hardly took advantage of those, by they got into the swing of thing’s next gen was already around the corner and most thought to just focus on those instead.

Vits866d ago

I agree with you. It's really weird to give developers yet another crutch when they haven't even made that good of use of the current ones. There are so few full next-gen titles, and most of them don't impress. Providing even more base power for them seems like a very good way to worsen the issue.

-Foxtrot865d ago

It's also weird that some developers could pull off demanding things simultaneously like 60fps and ray tracing together for example but because others can' it suddenly justifies the need for new technology as its made out that "all developers are struggling". Fact is it's most likely possible it can be done but I think the sad thing is some developers aren't as skilled or talented as other studios who can pull it off.

If a couple high up, well respected developers who have managed to pull off insane stuff with current hardware turn around and say "we need new technology, what we have at the minute is becoming an issue, we can't push it anymore" then fair enough but I'm sure given the time and resources developers in general could squeeze more out of this gen.

Look at NaughtyDog during the PS3 we went from something like Uncharted Drakes Fortune near the consoles launch to The Last of Us at the end, the year the PS4 came out. The jump in graphics, visuals, animation, AI and the like was amazing, it was literally a prime example of a developer squeezing what you could out of a console and I just don't see many developers at the minute doing that yet.

The thing is we'll get the PS5 Pro and the Next Mid Gen Xbox, we'll get some cool shiny things and features then within a couple years developers will most likely be getting dev kits for next gen consoles and they'll just move on, forgetting about mid gen consoles. So in the end I don't know why they don't just wait it out and blow us all away even more with next gen because if we get a preview into next gen with the mid gen consoles, we are less likely to be wowed next gen and its the main reason why some people go "Doesn't really feel like a massive jump does it?" upon entering next gen.

Einhander1972865d ago

C'mon, guys have you seen Alan Wake and Avatar on PC or tons of other games that look way better on PC than on console?

Obviously there is need for more power, these developers are already scaling things back for console, these developers are already making games for hardware more powerful than PS5.

What you are saying is kind of silly when you put it in perspective of what is already being made.

Vits865d ago (Edited 865d ago )

@Einhander1972

The number of people comparing consoles to PCs in this thread is really bizarre. Consoles aren't meant to compete with PCs in power; they are meant to compete by having a fixed hardware configuration that allows developers to OPTIMIZE their titles for them. The moment you change from optimization to simple having more raw power, you are stripping out what make consoles their own thing.

And let me tell you a secret. In raw power? Consoles will always lose.

Einhander1972865d ago (Edited 865d ago )

Optimization is irrelevant in this discussion and this isn't a pc vs consoles issue either.

Developers are already making games that can take advantage of more power than the current consoles can manage.

This is what I'm saying, almost every game has been cross gen, remasters/remakes of old games, multiplatform with lesser platforms, or started as a last gen game. Yes they are still good and even great games but they are not built with this gen in mind from the start, only a handful have been, and don't even get me started on the 1st party stuff. Going into the 4th year of this console and we've only had 4 games built ONLY for the PS5 to take full advantage of it, and 2 of them from the same dev, if this were any other generation it'd be over a dozen.

Einhander1972866d ago

But of course the xbox fanboys can't wait to have the shortest generation ever to get a "next gen" console that's more powerful PS5 Pro and that's ok with Forbes. Which of course is is just console war BS considering that vast majority of them didn't even spring for the more expensive console this gen and just want a gamepass box for the cheapest possible experience.

Sadly for them though that rumor came from a nobody fanboy who just wanted to deflect from the PS5 Pro and not an actual insider like Tom Henderson and then was just regurgitated around. I read that redgamingtech had information, so I watched his video and he was of course just repeating the first person, then I read Jeff Grubb had information so I checked what he said and of course he was just regurgitating the same rumor. No actual person has claimed any real information nor has their been any chip leaks and Microsoft's internal documents said 2028.

PS5 Pro doesn't need to be the main platform, but there are plenty of people who will want the premium experience including myself, and with PlayStation being the lead platform on so many games due to it's market share and the fact that people on PlayStation still buy games I am confident it will do just fine, like the PS4 Pro did.

shinoff2183865d ago

For real I didn't even get a ps4 pro till I had a ps5. I get and have no issue with people wanting a ps5 pro I'll get one eventually but for other purposes(same as why I got a ps4 pro, my uncle had one on old firmware like 8.72).

Einhander1972865d ago

Same for me, honestly, when the PS4 Pro was launched I didn't get it, I didn't really see the need. But then I got my PS5 and started playing all the PS4 Pro games and saw the difference.

I'm looking forward to the PS5 Pro, it should be a nice bump and bring consoles closer to PC, and if they can get existing games quality modes running at 60 fps or close enough to it for VRR it'll be awesome.

badz149865d ago

what the...

why did you 2 even go for the PS4 Pro AFTER you already got your PS5? just doesn't make sense! I had my Pro when I got the Spider-man Special Edition and find it very hard to return to the original PS4 I had since launch after experiencing performance mode. it's just so much better. now my PS4 Pro is collecting dust as I have permanently moving on to the PS5.

Einhander1972865d ago

badz149

PS5 plays PS4 Pro games with all the PS4 Pro features.

Ironmike865d ago (Edited 865d ago )

What load cods wallop xbox owners can't wait for new gen to start iam still waiting for this gen to start on both consoles never mind just xbox
