Thoughts on Nintendo's next-gen console and recommendations for major changes in direction with PS6

The PlayStation 5 Slim seems to be selling well compared to the original model, but it seems like it is still not enough to outperform the PlayStation 4, according to a new report.

So what does that say about Microsoft's two consoles that won't even sell 50m?

darthv72742d ago

To be fair... Sony needs PS sales more than MS needs XB sales. Sony has other ventures, but nothing that bring in the same amount of $$ while MS makes more $$ from pretty much their server, windows and office line of products. They still see XB as a pet project even though it has done better than they initially expected. Which is why it is still active unlike other pet projects like Zune and Hololens.

Christopher742d ago

How does any of what you wrote change the comparison? In the industry of consoles do we ignore performance from a trillion dollar company just by default?

S2Killinit741d ago

Pet project? xbox was a pet project now? I mean, wow. Soo, everything MS has said so far.. I’m sorry Im lost for words.. What a ridiculous comment. Is that supposed to be in defense of MS? Im just curious. How about stop making excuses for them? I think that would be better for xbox fans.

dveio741d ago

"They still see XB as a pet project"

According to how Xbox is doing since the end of 360 era - you're absolutely right.

But looking at numbers:

Considering MS has spent close to $85bn for studio acquisitions alone, spends $1 to $1.9bn annually for Third Parties in Gamepass, $2.5bn for ID@Xbox since 2017 ... that's a pretty neat pet project.

And here you still exclude any costs for R&D for the consoles, any costs for First Party titles, shipping, marketing, personnel, etc.

In other words: MS has spent annual net revenues from 2023 or 2022 or all net revenues combined from 2009 to 2019 into Xbox Gaming Division. And that's for the numbers that only are publically available.

If you ask me, Xbox Gaming Division is a financial headache for Microsoft ever since.

And Windows fierce product placements and monopolistic actions were always a headache for the public.

But that's a different topic that's been covered enough in the media.

EvertonFC741d ago

Pet project ? Haven't they just spent 65b on acquisitions. I don't call that a pet project 😂🤣

Mr Logic741d ago (Edited 741d ago )

Lol. This is like when people claim Xbox is more profitable than PS while ignoring that the Bungie acquisition comes out of PS financials (and they still turn a profit) while all the Xbox acquisitions come from the MS wallet.

Rynxie740d ago

Ms Xbox is still around because they are buying out competition and monopolizing the industry. Ms couldn't buy out apple or monopolize the music industry.

Ms tactics has always been to buyout or monopolize. If they can't do both or either, they pull out.

anast740d ago

All branches of a business need to make money. Xbox losing money is why they are selling toasters and leaning heavily to mobile games.

@chris, there was no comparison. einhander's statement was intended to change the topic at hand. all i did was provide some context to help him formulate his own answer.

To address yours, in essence, because XB was never a key profit division... it means absolutely nothing to their two consoles like it does to Sony's. Hence why the topic should be redirected back to the main subject matter.

You, of all people, should know this.

Einhander1972742d ago

No, the comment was made in relation to the original article which was changed.

Chevalier740d ago

Except their Music division was their best performing division. So Sony doesn't only need their game division to carry them.

Says your mom won’t be getting you those consoles for Christmas. How unfortunate!

Does make an interesting point about the idea of a PS5 pro and if there really is as much of a market for it as people assume. I do think if there’s one thing to take from the switch’s success is that graphics are important, but good game and especially art design should be the priority.

EvertonFC741d ago

Sony will know the numbers of what the ps5 pro will sell from PS4 pro sales data.
I'm guessing the ps4 pro sold about 15m and Sony will be happy to accommodate that pro crowd with the ps5 pro with little work needed.
I also imagine with gta6 there will be more gamers willing to buy the ps5 pro this time around compared to the ps4 pro. How many PC gamers will be tempted to buy a ps5 pro not willing to wait 1 or 2 years for the PC version ?

Zeke68740d ago (Edited 740d ago )

@EvertonFc When PS4/Pro had sold a little over 100 million Sony said 25% of that was Pro consoles. So you are like vgachartz, undercutting the Pro with 10 million while it's almost twice of the number you claimed. The Pro sold somewhere between 25- 28 million.

FinalFantasyFanatic740d ago

I would think Sony has does a cost benefit analysis of some sort, they have data from their previous Pro model, so they probably have a ball park figure for how much they think they can sell.

EvertonFC740d ago

@zeke68

As of January 2020 PS4 PRO sold 14.2m consoles, data from the ABK acquisition leaked documents.
So actually I was right and you were way over 😂🤣

This dude once predicted xsx would succeed in Japan at the beginning of this gen, so ya.....

Unknown_Gamer5794741d ago

There were Xbox people who actually thought it would outsell the PS4. I’m not even kidding.

Eonjay741d ago

It's pretty much tied with the PS4. And, the Xbox people were right. It's passing the PS4 if it hasn't already. It is ahead in the US and Japan BTW. Only behind in Europe where stock was non existent

Eonjay741d ago

The whole thing is a scam. The PS5 was one week behind ps4 sales as of the week if December 9th meaning that the PS5 could very well be ahead if the PS4 by now. This is probably the last chance blogs have to try to pretend that the PS5 is really behind. Ignore it. It's a scam.

derek741d ago (Edited 741d ago )

What a bunch of nonsense, is the translation even correct? Since announcing 50 million sold and setting the 25 million target for the fiscal year, it's been a cavalcade of fud against all things playstation. Now Sony should copy the switch for the ps6 and the pro wont sell? Lol. When and if the pro is announced it will be the exact same pandemonium we saw with the ps5s release.

Kekewei741d ago

English-speaking readers might not be familiar with this guy, he's been talking shit of Sony since the psp days.

Best Adventure Game of 2025

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "While not carrying the same heft it enjoyed long ago, last year was one of the adventure genre's most commercially-successful years in this century. A Telltale-esque adventure eclipsing 3 million sales in three months would be the talk of the town were it not for another adventure game hurdling over 10 million sales in two. Though not all finalists reached those heights, each did share a greater amount of spotlight compared to similar titles within their respective sub-genres.

Past any sales thresholds and popularity contests, 2025 also deserves credit for its creativity; the last time our entire shortlist consisted exclusively of new IPs was for Best Adventure Game of 2020. An impressive year for the genre, with even greater potential ahead."
