The Xbox One vision everyone rejected has become a reality, and I couldn’t be happier

Often called a 'launch disaster', you only need to look at the Xbox ecosystem now to understand the Xbox One's vision was actually ahead of its time.

I would argue that it goes even further than the consoles themselves. I recall the fearmongering that people had with the Kinect camera spying on them because it was always connected to the internet. Now? We have more than 500 million Alexa-enabled devices worldwide constantly listening to us and our families.

But 10 years ago privacy laws weren't as strict as today. The situation isn't the same

x_xavier_x784d ago

Could you provide some examples of "privacy laws" which have been amended in the last 10 years,

shinoff2183784d ago

Damn and he hit em with the law

headshotfrosty784d ago

Gamers weren't thinking about privacy laws. It was an irrational fear and fanboying. Simple.

Laws smmawrs

Read Edward snowdon.

Seraphim784d ago

what privacy laws? maybe overseas, but certainly not here in the US. In the US car manufactures have access to voice calls and text logs that go through vehicles. A court recently ruled they have every right to. How's that for privacy?

But MS was proposing more than Alexa. MS had developed and patented tech to allow kinect to pick up vital/medical, temprature, eye movements. MS also had patented a tech they showcased to a group of industry insiders allowing kinect to count the number of people watching a show/movie to charge consumers based on number of people watching a rented item.

One company invading your privacy doesnt justify another doing it too.

Besides, MS was using the kinect as a trojan horse. People wanted to game, and MS was coupling the kinect without a choice. At least with Alexa you are making the choice to get the device and you know it is listening because that is what it is sold for.

Looks like you people have short memory.

@x_xavier_x The California consumer privacy act(CCPA) which came into effect on Jan 2020, Virginia Consumer privacy Data Protection Act came into effect on Jan 2023 and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect May 2018. It is these laws that makes it so that you can choose what data can be collected whenever you visit a website or download an app on your phone.

It also allows you to have a say in what data Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo or anyone with an online service collects about you when you sign into your profile for the first time.

headshotfrosty784d ago

This has zero to do with always online. Any time you log online this would apply.

x_xavier_x784d ago

The CCPA only allows an individual to opt out of the sale of collected data. It also allows one to delete SOME of the personal information collected by corporations. This act (not law) only supports residents of California. The Virginia Consumer privacy Data Protection Act provides the same rudimentary protection for residents of that state,

The GDPR still allows data collection as long as there is a legal reason to do so, which can be as simple as a user agreement on a purchased product such as a gaming console or even an online game.

So, for the most part nothing has changed in the past 10 years in regard to "privacy laws" other than there are now some regulations in place that require companies to be more transparent in their data processing. It is now required that companies provide Individuals with a choice to opt out of having their private data sold, but this is not a new stipulation and has been in place for long before the arrival of the Xbox One.

Corporations are still collecting monumental amounts of customer's private data, more so than at any time in history, despite the implementation of these acts.

Always online/connected devices where an issue back, still are and should be complained about/fought against, only what MS wanted to do with used games made even more noise.

They were talking about the terms of how games were lent to friends, and expecting to be paid for that privilege.

Berenger784d ago

-It's the age-old debate between "being required" vs "sold as a commodity."
-When people have the option to buy a commodity, they don't feel forced into that ecosystem because they feel the value is worth the trade-off. (Gamepass, Spotify, Netflix, GPS)
-When you tell people they are "required" to do this, they will only do so if they have no other option.
-That's the biggest reason people rejected XBone. They were going to be required and they chose different products that offered similar experiences without being "required."
-Kinect being included in every Xbox one purchase (required) and always online (required) to enjoy the product, made it less appealing.

Everyone uses their console as a cable box and tries to control games with their bodies instead of controllers?

PhillyDonJawn784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

That was optional not required

Stanjara784d ago

MS was pushing it... pun intended.

cooperdnizzle784d ago

Nah all consoles came with a Kinect. So that wasn’t optional and when it comes to what you use the console for well,
That’s always optional. But they really did push the cable box/tv thing to the bone.

And when it came to always being online that was not optional at the beginning either.

This article is one of the biggest Xbox apologist fluff pieces ive ever read.

The articles mentions many minor nuances as if they are some revolutionary thing. What MS tried to do in 2013 was not good then and is not good now, trying to play all this up while not so subtlety bashing the PS platform for being 'the same' is laughable.

Clearly the majority of gamers didn't disagree, Series console sales are plummeting and somehow selling worse than the X1, which is imo is one of the most underwhelming consoles ever. Also stagnating gamepass numbers, which MS won't give out any real data on are a further indication that MS are obviously not giving us the grand gaming future that everyone wants, a ridiculous article honestly lol.

CrashMania784d ago

'didn't disagree'

*Agree, really need to wake up properly first before posting on forums lol

Pretty much this.

While I'd argue ms is more of a cancer on gaming now, than back then, if you're going to compare the xbone to the Series X, than you don't belong in journalism.

Actually, on second thought, if you're going to write such a manipulated article and push a narrative, you absolutely are doing the job of a journalist.

Lmao this headline is a gross overstatement.

Could Anthem live on? Tech allowing local server hosting existed, former executive producer says

BioWare's multiplayer shooter Anthem was terminated this week because EA no longer wanted to maintain servers for people to play the game on, and without them, no one can play the game. But the former executive producer of Anthem has revealed that BioWare had technology working, close to the game's release, that would enable us to host our own servers to play the game on.

EA/Bioware should allow us to host our own servers to let this game live on.

I'd be fine just playing it as a localhost and dumb as rocks AI bots. Just give me the choice.
