Just as Sony predicted, this year the PS5 will go past the PS4 and never look back.

Eonjay792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

Xbox down 11% and PS is up by 9% meaning a total relative market share swing of 20%. So the gap is 20% more than the last gen if I am thinking about this correctly. What is causing the Xbox to be down? Another thought: Remember when Phil said he considers PS and Switch to be part of Xbox... we maybe he is alluding to going full third party. After all, owning all those developers and publishers, it is in MS' best interest to put their games where the consumers are.

Plague-Doctor27792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

I bet the MW3 numbers will show the majority of Xbox 1st party game sales for the entire year are from Playstation users

rippermcrip792d ago

The cause is the same as it has been for a long time. They don't have great exclusives. Exclusives are insanely important for picking consoles.

Nyxus792d ago

Yeah going third party would probably be the best choice for them, especially given all the studios they now own.

Stanjara792d ago

Yup, MS made sure they can make money outside of consoles.
Numbers are all over... but they still sold 240k in US October.

I must see global sale numbers, but for MS is just another day at the office.

StormSnooper792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

Its not just a matter of exclusives but also good will. MS seems to be taking water everytime they overhype a game to heavens end, and then fall short of those rightly astronomical expectations. PlayStation on the other hand has consistently delivered, and over delivered.

I never thought I would EVER say that its a good thing for a console maker to exit consoles. But with the direction MS is taking… its hard to argue with that they might do us all a favor by exiting.

CombatEmu792d ago

"What is causing the Xbox to be down"

Not having compelling software this year (no, Starfield is not compelling sorry) and PC getting Day 1 treatment with Xbox consoles.

Xbox down 11% from the Xbox One is non-hyperbolically disastrous. The Xbox One announcement was a PR disaster and Microsoft lost a lot of goodwill from the consumers. Not to mention, you couldn't buy the standalone console without the Kinect until June 2014. Even then, despite those factors, it actually managed to stay not far behind the PS4 in the US for 3 years until Sony really hit the ground running with its 1st party games.

The Xbox Series came into this generation with a bunch of advantages over the Xbox One: no PR disaster, the Series X being the most powerful console, and the Series S having a low-ish entry price. So the fact it's doing worse is very bad.

Vengeance1138792d ago

Xbox is down because absolutely nobody needs an Xbox to play Xbox games with the large push into GP.
There really is no reason at all for MS to continue to pump out hardware when they want everyone and their dog subscribed to GP, so just do what MS does and force it.

crazyCoconuts792d ago

Yeah along with his earlier comments about not being able to win the console war, that's been the "read between the lines" message.
It's hard for us to say what's best for MS. The gray area around how many Xboxes out there do they need to be profitable, how many exclusives do they need to keep on Xbox to retain the people they have vs. the potential $ of making those games multi-platform... don't know, it's not an all or nothing proposition.
They may choose to keep churning out some exclusives depending on how those projections / calculations look for them.

ChasterMies792d ago

“Remember when Phil said he considers PS and Switch to be part of Xbox... we maybe he is alluding to going full third party.”

Phil started alluding to this when he told Kinda Funny that Xbox lost the console war. Microsoft wants to dominate gaming, and they see Game Pass as the way to do it. The problem is selling Game Pass on proprietary platforms. PS5, Nintendo, the App Store, and Google Play store are all walled gardens that want a % of the monthly subscription fee.

darthv72792d ago

Prolonged continuance of the 8th gen is what hurt XB more than PS. MS mandating that all newer games must be made to work on the prior was a big turnoff for many developers. Many of which just opted not to release their game on XB at all and instead went to PS and Switch. It probably also ddnt help that MS kept touting how Gamepass was the best thing ever.

From a consumer POV... its fantastic. Its easy to use and has a huge selection for every type of consumer. From a dev/pub POV... its a bitch to make any $$ at. Its great for exposure, but they rely on people buying instead of renting. Its all about the messaging. Series is a great platform... probably one of their best in terms of reliability and performance. Their messaging of play anywhere and how you want to is keeping consumers from buying because they are being told they no longer NEED to.

andy85792d ago

I only imagine if XB didn't have the 'cheap entry' to next gen what the numbers would look like

Cacabunga792d ago

Insane momentum.. Sony show us more 1st party games in the pipeline

specialguest792d ago

You people celebrate these victories like it's your hometown sports team lol. Do you REALLY want your rival console to fail and disappear only to have no competition? Do you people understand what that really means for the industry and especially for consumers??

JohnMarble792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

Specialguest

You have a lot of negativity towards Sony and Playstation in your past comments, so a post like this from you checks out.

And yes, my favourite era was when PS2 was dominating, we were spoilt. So Microsoft failing really isn't a bad thing for gaming.

Hofstaderman792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

I have been saying this since the beginning of this year; the writing has been on the wall since Phil's defeatist interview. He himself stated that even with high quality games people will not turn around and buy an XBOX. He has been preparing us from back then already. What a chop, thats exactly what has and will always sell a console. Not services.

EvertonFC791d ago (Edited 791d ago )

GP and no Xbox gamers not buying games add to that 25m GP gamers dipping in and out of GP amd many of them actually not subbing for 12 month.

cammers1995791d ago

It's because Phil Spencer sucks at his job and is ruining Xbox.

Good. Let them keep floundering. They want to continue to ruin gaming for their benefit and our future nightmare, then let them drown. I'm not throwing them a preserver.

Good job again Sony for doing what even Nintendo has known for years: make great games, pull in the consumers who will buy. That other company refuses to do that for years. They would rather buy themselves into a poll position. I don't think so.

bababrooks791d ago

yada yada ....... each to there own dude !

DRambo791d ago

That's right, and we're discussing the consequences here.

recoctimocassirnff791d ago

I wish I could give you 2 agrees.

ms is called the cancer of gaming for very good reason.

Magog792d ago

Xbox would have gone third party 3 years ago if Nintendo and PlayStation agreed to offer gamepass subs. I don't see MS going third party until that happens.

darthv72792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

Maybe not so much 3rd party as they would full PC. They can give up the plastic box under the tv but they will never give up the PC (and now mobile).

Edit: is is still considered 3rd party if its their own cloud distribution? Releasing their games to everyone via their cloud based servers regardless of end user device/specs. Right now they release stuff on steam because its the biggest pc launcher but they also make their games on xcloud. Xcloud is what they have been building more into lately. And recently showcased a new cloud ai processor that is being introduced to help move that forward.

Magog792d ago

Self publishing on PC is third party. Ubisoft does it along with a host of others.

Eonjay792d ago

I think there is no chance that they go third party without supporting PS and Nintendo. They are already on PC.

crazyCoconuts792d ago

if we're talking no more Xbox exclusive games, I'd think it depends on how confident they are in their cloud sub strategy (GamePass via XCloud). If they believe heavily in that future, then they would believe that Nintendo and PlayStation are holding on to archaic models where the console is at the center of the business model.
They might think that future gamers will gladly move to phones / tablets / cheap streaming devices (yet to come) so PS and Nintendo will lose their hold because Xbox will offer a cheaper subscription on devices that either everyone owns or can own for next to nothing.
I don't believe this, but they might.

ThePacemaker792d ago

That’s incorrect. Sony allowed EA Play & Ubisoft+ on PS. Why would they deny GP?

Magog792d ago

They are on record as having denied it. The obvious reason is that unlike EA and Ubisoft MS are direct competitors.

tay8701792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

Not going to happen. Why on earth would Sony allow a direct competitor to have their gaming service on their store?

Aloymetal792d ago

And all this while having a rough start due to the chip issues. PS brand is a juggernaut around the planet!

792d ago
cammers1995791d ago

Yep. Everyone lined up trying to get PlayStation 5 and figured out ways despite chip issues while Microsoft couldn't sell Xbox systems lol because nobody wants one. Hilarious.

Father__Merrin792d ago

Xbox has gone down hill simply because of Phil Spencer and parroting of ganepass

Sonic1881792d ago

Don't tell that to Obscure_Observer

CombatEmu792d ago

People forget that before he became head of Xbox, Phil was the head of 1st party studios. The 360's first party offerings post-Kinect were not as good as they were pre-Kinect.

cammers1995791d ago

Phil Spencer is a narcissist and has an out of control ego. A combination that will only lead to ruin for a company and a brand.

Best Adventure Game of 2025

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "While not carrying the same heft it enjoyed long ago, last year was one of the adventure genre's most commercially-successful years in this century. A Telltale-esque adventure eclipsing 3 million sales in three months would be the talk of the town were it not for another adventure game hurdling over 10 million sales in two. Though not all finalists reached those heights, each did share a greater amount of spotlight compared to similar titles within their respective sub-genres.

Past any sales thresholds and popularity contests, 2025 also deserves credit for its creativity; the last time our entire shortlist consisted exclusively of new IPs was for Best Adventure Game of 2020. An impressive year for the genre, with even greater potential ahead."
