PS5 Best-Selling Console in the US in October, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Debuts in 1st

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the US in October 2023 in terms of units sold and dollar sales, according to figures from Circana (formerly The NPD Group). Circana includes the dates for the four week period of October 1 to 28.

"Launch month dollar sales of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 exceeded those of September 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man by a double-digit percentage."

https://twitter.com/MatPisc...

Einhander1972793d ago (Edited 793d ago )

"By Circana's numbers, Spider-Man 2 is already the fourth best-selling game of the year, behind only Hogwarts Legacy, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Madden NFL 24 in that order."

Note: This is ranked on dollar sales of full game purchases, so it doesn't include bundles.

VersusDMC793d ago

And it is only 8 days of sales as it only reports up to the 28th and SM2 came out on the 20th.

Eonjay793d ago

Well damn... but we shouldn't be too surprised. Spiderman's popularity is unmatched.

Einhander1972793d ago

It's kind of a shame it's tracked by sales and not units, because the Spider-Man 2 bundles are clearly going to sell millions on top of the full game sales.

neutralgamer1992793d ago

It’s sad that madden sells this much when the game has been down in quality for a decade or longer

Going from $60 to $70 by itself is a 16.667% increase, so that says nothing outside of accounting for the price increase.

The bigger statement is from Sony themselves giving specifics on 2.5m day one (their biggest ever) and 5m after 11 days.

8 days of sales for Spider-Man 2. It will become the best selling game of 2023 soon

Plague-Doctor27793d ago

Has a lot of ground to cover to beat Hogwarts, TOTK, and probably COD

mkis007793d ago

It may be possible. Xmas sales will probably dwarf what has released until now.

Jin_Sakai792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

Crazy how XBS are doing worse than XBO.

“Piscatella: In the US, PS5 is now trending 9% above PS4; XBS trails behind XBO by 11%”

YTD October
2023 PS5 ~4.24 m
2023 XBS ~2.19 m
2016 PS4 ~2.41 m
2016 XBO ~2.22 m

LTD (After 36 months)
PS5 ~16.16m
PS4 ~14.83m
XBO ~13.33m
XBS ~11.86 m

Spiderman 2 already selling more than Diablo 4 and Jedi Survivor for the entirety if 2023 is kind of crazy considering its only on one platform

Tacoboto793d ago

Agreed, Spider-Man's a beast! I'd have never thought it to exceed Diablo 4 right out the gate but it did.

It's weird seeing Starfield ahead of FFXVI *and* RE4 both too. RE4 is so incredible and multiplatform, and FFXVI was hyped and marketed like a full first party title. I'd have surely thought they'd have done better especially being out months earlier

Obscure_Observer793d ago

"It's weird seeing Starfield ahead of FFXVI *and* RE4 both too."

Not surprised at all. Starfield is a massive success on Xbox.

Einhander1972793d ago

It's w̶i̶e̶r̶d̶ "unfortunate" seeing Starfield ahead of FFXVI *and* RE4 both too. RE4 is so incredible and multiplatform, and FFXVI was hyped and marketed like a full first party title.

But personally I would say the thing about Startfied is that it could have been in the top three, I think many people expected that.

But instead it's behind MK1 a game that only sold 3m WW.

That said FFXVI outsold SF6 which was praised as a huge success with a release on 5 platforms. Though i will say Sony/Square really dropped the ball on FFXVI post launch marketing, the bundles didn't really last and they stopped pushing it in advertising and it hasn't had a big sale at retail or on PS Store. I feel like they could have squeezed a lot more sales out of it.

That's the keyword - on Xbox. This chart is dollar sales-based.

Steam must've accounted for a lot considering the market share of Xbox relative to PS, and the impact of Game Pass where Premium Upgrades were only $30 or $40, compared to these other $60-$70 titles that released to a much wider console audience.

Einhander1972793d ago

"That's the keyword - on Xbox. This chart is dollar sales-based"

This chart includes Steam, where by far the majority of Starfields sales were.

I mean, we can have a whole other discussion about the value of "players vs sales" ...

crazyCoconuts793d ago

Can't help but to wonder how many Xbox execs are looking at spreadsheets that estimate how many more units would sell if they put the games on PS. Articles like this just make avoiding that discussion harder and harder

Obscure_Observer793d ago (Edited 793d ago )

@crazyCoconuts

"Can't help but to wonder how many Xbox execs are looking at spreadsheets that estimate how many more units would sell if they put the games on PS."

Probably a lot, but still, Starfield proved that it doesn´t need Playstation to be successful.

It performed amazingly giving its only available exclusively on both Xbox and STEAM.

Some PS fanboys were expecting it to flop in sales, specially considering the fact that Starfied is avaliable on both Xbox and PC Gamepass.

Given its sales number and player engagement, specially on Xbox, I´m pretty sure that executives at MS are more than satisfied with Starfield´s successful release.

CombatEmu793d ago

@Obscure

And yet, Starfield couldn't beat the poorly done Metal Gear Solid collection in September. Not to mention, the average Steam review score keeps dropping and concurrent player count dropped below Skyrim's. It's a tale of coming out of the gate in a full sprint and immediately running out of gas.

Also, mind if you share how Forza is doing? For someone who's extremely invested on the Xbox, it's rather suspicious you don't talk about all of Microsoft's 1st party games.

Crows90793d ago (Edited 793d ago )

Re4 and ff16 didn't sell much...starfields didn't do well either but just enough better to beat out those 2...it's not saying much. As someone stated it is behind mk1 and that sold 3 million.

So yeah. Tells you where starfields is at. The game flopped hard in sales compared to expectations.

Gamingsince1981793d ago

obscure_observer really just lives in some weird other reality, the things he says are beyond delusional, they arent even close to matching reality, the front page even has a story of starfield being a flop and hes still going on about how well it has done........ it has to be trolling at this point, you can just make this stuff up and pretend its real and think everyone will believe you. its insane

people don't understand just how popular spiderman is. And for sony to have it as an exclusive is HUGE. This will be the #1 game almost every kid(and many adults) will want as their present. It will help sell the software and hardware (imagine how many parents will need to buy PS5 when they realize it's only available on PS

ChasterMies793d ago

“considering its only on one platform”

If you are only going to be on one platform, PS5 is the platform to be on.

Hereandthere793d ago

The main reason why exclusives will always drive sales.

Tacoboto793d ago

Well, October will be the only month of the year I guess we can say and relish in this

It's pleasant seeing a COD title *not* in the Top 5 Overall

Not bad. I wouldn’t spend money on Mirage but I will add ot to my library just in case I’m really bored someday. WoLong Granblue and Skate Story are nice.

jznrpg36d ago

I enjoyed it. A lot like Nioh which is a soulslike

S2Killinit36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Fun fact: From what I heard about the setting of Mirage, it would be the most authentic assassins creed to date as the real creed originated around those parts of the world.

Here's How Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Holds Up on the $1,000 ROG Xbox Ally X

A noticeable improvement over the Steam Deck, but those reflections are hilarious. You're definitely paying for better quality with that hefty price tag. I do like that density isn't really affected by quality, though.

darthv7292d ago

For the performance they were going for, increasing the reflections would not have been viable. The deck and rog can certainly be taken further into the quality mode, but obviously performance takes a huge hit..... but it does look good on a little screen.

shadowT92d ago

Yes, it runs somehow in low graphic resolution and with very limited effects. $1000 for this quality?

drivxr92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

Looks impressive for a handheld that lets you play anywhere other than a living room or a desk.

XBManiac92d ago

It works best with Steam OS, so don't despair.
