Nintendo Hints It Will Continue Extensive Switch Support, Even After New-Gen Hardware Release

With the Switch being Nintendo's second best-selling console ever, it's no surprise the company isn't quite ready to say goodbye to the platform yet.

I can see this I've been playing a some recent games on the switch lately totk and Mario wonder and my main takeaway is there's extremely bright sections of these games present almost as if there's meant to be a level of HDR implementation despite the switch not having it at all.
Also paper Mario the thousand year door remaster has a strong focus on lighting again pushing up against the switches real hardware limitations

Along with the recent leaks of upcoming games featuring the European SNES button colours despite being on switch and largely using the same black and grey button layout for games since it came out.
It seems like all of this is hunting to a switch successor going the route of cross generation games at least initially and why not Afterall the switch has over 100 million in sales

They have a history of doing the complete opposite, so it's hard to believe they will.

Yeah I can see that everytime they announce we're still going to support X legacy hardware they don't.

The switch isn't the 3ds replacement

The ds isn't the GBA replacement

On that note the Nintendo always does backwards compatibility argument is really factually inaccurate.

SNES = no
N64 = no
GameCube= no
Wii = yes
Wii U= yes but only Wii no more GC
Switch= no

So in the home console space they have only done BC twice. Handheld fares better but no garuntee

Unknown_Gamer5794939d ago

Part of the problem too is they also have a lengthy history of changing up their media format, which makes physical BC impossible in most cases. They changed their cart format up until the N64, then went with mini discs, then did proper discs (it’s worth noting that Wii is only BC with GameCube, for obvious reasons), and now they have SD-style carts.

On the handheld front, Nintendo was much better at BC, having full BC up until the GBA. Then, the DS and 3DS shook up the cart format, and I’m pretty sure the GBA slot on the DS only played GBA games, with the DS and 3DS then only being BC by one gen.

Well of course, its hard to simply abandon roughly 90 - 1000 million players, wouldn't it? So yeah, expect a long cross-gen period just like PS4 and XBO went through. I know the Switch has sold over 135 million units, but I'm talking about unique players, as an example, I own 3 Switches, but I don't represent 3 total players.

Yui_Suzumiya938d ago

I'm just praying for backwards compatibility because I sold my Switch and game collection but want to repurchase a majority of those games again in the future and would like them to run on the new hardware.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle38d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
