The First PlayStation Portal Unboxings And Impressions Are Arriving

The First PlayStation Portal Unboxings And Impressions Are Arriving

The PlayStation Portal, Sony’s new dedicated device geared at PS5 remote play at home or anywhere there’s a Wi-Fi connection, is out in select regions as early as next week and we’re now starting to get the first glimpses of the Portal in the wild thanks to early review units.

So I will be paying close attention attention to reviews but there are two reasons I want this. First I am always gonna prefer a controller over a backbone and... I know I. Not the only one getting older here and I need a large screen like this. My phone screen isn't gonna cut it for me.

Neonridr799d ago

the backbone is a controller though. If you had said you needed Dualsense features I could understand that statement.

Eonjay799d ago

I meant I prefer the DualSense controller over the Backbone. You know the Portal is technically just a controller too.

Neonridr798d ago

@Eonjay - yeah, a controller with a screen. I too would prefer the dualsense after using it.

LastAvenger798d ago

I like my backbone. I was playing Hogwarts from it at work yesterday with ease. However the dualsense handles would be a great improvement. Also I have the iPhone 14 Pro Max and it still works with the backbone but the left side has to just out farther than the right. I really need this as an away from home solution.

Cmon you know what he meant he prefer C's over A's # no knobs can compare men of culture understand

As a fellow old person... i know exactly what you mean. However, in my situation I find myself feeling the urge to go into my game room and play is becoming less and less. I like to play my switch, evercade, steam deck, psp/vita and 3ds more as I can just kick back on the couch with the screen that is closer to my face.

I have this coming in the mail next week and I believe this will help me to enjoy my PS5 more as a result. I have a nice mesh network in my house and using remote play on my vita has worked well and i expect this will be even better as its not only bigger and quicker but dedicated.

I was planning to get the logitech gcloud but I see that one you have to pay extra for an app in order to do remote play on PS. I hear it works great for xcloud though so that may still happen.

derek799d ago

@darth, yep I pre-ordered one 2 can't wait that screen is huge. Hope it's comfortable to hold. There are many times I have no desire to go downstairs to play on the big screen. This will allow me to play and finish alot of my backlog.

crazyCoconuts799d ago

I'm embarrassed to say that I use the little compartment in my steam deck case for my reading glasses lol
Evercade? Nice!
You're not the same darth I'm always disagreeing with, are you? Lol

Eonjay799d ago (Edited 799d ago )

@darth
Totally agree!

@crazyCoconuts
Nothing to be ashamed of!

Profchaos799d ago (Edited 799d ago )

I'd bet money that this will receive homebrew firmware to open it up to pretty much all streaming services and possibly some local emulation of older systems nes, SNES PS1 seem likely

The only thing keeping me from using a backbone, are those small joycon-like thumbsticks, making it a pain to play shooters and alike. If they would update the controller and include bigger thumbsticks, comparable to those on the DualSense or XB1 controllers, I'd definitely consider a backbone. Until then, I expect the Portal to be a much better alternative

TiredGamer799d ago

Don’t understand the backlash over the Portal.

You are not going to get a Vita 2 from Sony. They’ve been there and done that, and it makes little sense to split limited development resources making cut down games for a separate platform. It made sense back in the PSP days when developer budgets and game expectations were reasonable, but not today when the public expects first party titles to be big budget affairs. Times and lofty expectations have increased too much, and today’s gamers are unwilling to spend more than 1996 level prices for individual games.

The Portal seems like a fantastic dedicated device to play your system remotely with 100% integration and perfect controls. No added Bluetooth lag from wireless controllers, no tiny screen, and no added overhead from translating the experience to a separate non-dedicated device.

The great thing about this is that it is completely optional for the player. No one is forcing you to buy it, and you’re not missing out on a different library of games if you don’t. Additionally, this is a relatively small investment from Sony, so they’re not splitting their assets trying to support two distinct game platforms at once. Win-win for both Sony and the players that this appeals to.

AdonisIsBeast799d ago

No need to split dev resources, they can make it an all digital handheld similar to the Steamdeck. I’m getting the Portal but no need to cater and defend Sony when they could have actually given people a device that is more practical.

derek799d ago

@,Adonis, you mean play games locally? Nah that device would be much more expensive and is antithetical to promoting the purchasing of a ps5, why would Sony do that? The portal addresses a specific need, that being a handheld device to play your ps5 games on, nothing more nothing less. They probably will add cloud functionality down the line when the ps5 reaches a saturation point.

TiredGamer799d ago

I’m confused. You wanted Sony to produce a standalone handheld system that could play PS5 titles locally? That’s impractical. The Steamdeck is around $500 and less than 2 TF of performance. Sony has no interest in going down the ugly road of the XBox Series S, and I’m sure most developers would agree.

AdonisIsBeast799d ago

I will lighten up my opinion on this if it connects smoothly. I have good internet (not high end gaming speed but pretty fast similar to what most people probably have). If it lags like it does when trying to connect to remote play on my laptop then my point stands.

DivineHand125795d ago

The problem with the playstation portal is that is that while it does serve a niche for those who want to do remote play, it should have at least provided the option for cloud gaming. This device is mostly useful to digital only gamers. Physical only gamers can only play the game where the disk Is already inserted as you can't swap remotely.

It also makes it so if you want to use a wireless headset officially, you have to purchase the new expensive headset or air buds as it is not compatible with the pulse wireless headset.

Mkbhd did a great job explaining that part.

bangoskank799d ago

This is enticing but I'm gonna hold out for the inevitable OLED version.

jznrpg799d ago

6 more days I’ll have mine

repsahj798d ago

I will also get one! So excited!

jznrpg798d ago

Me too! It’s not going to replace my play on TV but it’s going to give me extra playtime on top of my that and that’s why it’s really exciting to me.

repsahj797d ago

@jznrpg
...same! I hope I will not abandon my nintendo switch. XD

Barlos799d ago

It arrives next week, but I can't have mine until Christmas

I have been using the portal to play robocop, the plucky squire, Spider-man 2 and GoW Ragnarok. I know many were initially turned off on the idea of streaming games... but people really need to give it a fair chance now. Its way better than when it first launched. Stadia was onto something, But Google is not Sony (or MS) and so they had to take the fall so that the other services could rise.

Neonridr70d ago

I'm willing to wager most people who own a Portal also own a PS5. I'm curious to know how the device performs when solely streaming vs using it via Remote Play.

I guess I understand the benefits if you are away from your house, but at home I don't see why you wouldn't still want to just use remote play.

darthv7270d ago (Edited 70d ago )

remote play is handy if the game you want to stream is on your 5, and not already in the cloud service. I found that certain games may say they are streamable, but only if they are actually still in the service. Case in point... I saw that in my list of games in my library was Jedi Fallen Order. I wanted to give that a whirl but it said it was no longer available. I looked on my 5 and sure enough its still there and so I can play that using remote play, but not cloud direct play. I think its because it was a game I claimed from PS+, and it has since been removed. So it is not 'officially' in the cloud streaming list even though it shows as one I could stream from my library.

So I use the actual cloud streaming side for games I do not have installed on my 5. And it works great in my home. I have not tried it from another location, so I dont know how well internet access is outside of my home network. I get ridiculed for saying this but I use the cloud streaming services of both XB and PS as a way to guage interest in fully installing or even purchasing games. Its easier to load up the game via the cloud because you dont have to sit there and commit time to download/install.

If I like what I'm playing... I will do the full commitment and even purchase. If people dont look at this as trying to replace, but instead as a means to compliment the systems... they might find it benefits them more to use these services as a taste test / try before you buy sort of thing. I dont know why that always seems to ruffle people on here when I express how i use them, but it does.

Neonridr70d ago

@darthv72 - that's fair, thanks for the response.

The_Hooligan70d ago

I mainly play JRPGs or similar games on the portal. Currently remote playing DQ3 and it's great. I did play Spider-Man and FF7 intergrade, just to see how it feels when I first bought the portal and it played just fine. But to me, those games are better enjoyed with bigger screens. So games like DQ3 and Unicorn overlord, to me are better suited for portal because you don't need those quick responses from the controller and they are not graphics heavy that you need TV/monitor.

I did play Ghost of Yotei streaming on Portal today and again it played great. No input lag or anything but again a beautiful game like that to me is better enjoyed on a bigger screen.

Hypertension14070d ago (Edited 70d ago )

@darthv72

You're right about streaming. Once you have the proper hardware setup, it works really well.

I've already completed over 10 games on my portal and currently playing through silent hill, Its just really expensive and not everyone has access to super fast internet.

Abear2170d ago

I’ve been playing Dave the Diver and Deliver at all Costs and these are the best types of games to play on it imo. Stardew Valley is warm on the back burner, cannot wait to try Lumines on 11/11.

I like that they have been able to correct (sort of) one of the Portal's biggest flaws, but it sucks that they restrict these features behind a paywall.

Cacabunga79d ago

That would be a killer app..
right now the cloud streaming library isn’t that big. This would def be something I would gladly use

repsahj79d ago

Yeah. This is useless to be honest. If you have a premium subscription, I am sure many of your games in you library are also in it.

darthv7279d ago

this would be a nice feature to have. I have plenty of games that show as being able to be streamed... just not via the portal. I use another app on my steamdeck that lets me play those but I'd much rather have the real PS controller feel of the portal.

repsahj79d ago

Cloud streaming for your digital library should be included with just the lowest tier only. What's the point of having your gaming library if you can play all of it if you have a premium subscription?

Dandizzle79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

that would be sick!!
