Hmm... could be at the point where 4k (and 8k) content would be able to stream at the same rate as 480p so it wont break people who have data caps.

ABizzel1928d ago

This sounds more like a benefit for multiple things.

Machine Learning for Video is ideally boosting quality of the image, thus removing as much of a need for decompression software which is great for clarity and higher resolution content.

The tech could also be used at a system level in something like a PS5 Pro or PS6 family for machine learning for games, allowing them to upscale better at lower resolutions like DLSS and XESS, which is great.

Or it could be used for streaming games, allowing them to natively stream at resolutions like 720p - 1080p through the internet, but display to consumers at 1440p - 4K thanks to machine learning, thus allowing lower bandwidth connections to have access to high quality streams. Not for me, but great for those who use it.

Eonjay928d ago

If you have seen the latest tests on the new PS5 streaming, you may have noticed just how sharp the picture is (at 4k). It sounds like the AI is reconstructing the image...a la DLSS? This is all speculation. 480p probably isn't enough to reconstruct 4k tho. Now that i thik about it could this this be how the PRO does 8k?

Ashley home furniture?! That's quite the acquisition 🤣

I've never seen you anything other than dissapointed. Maybe you should go out more.

Well that’s bullshit and you know it

I do, just nobody cares to remember a positive comment

Hey if you want to be a f****** arsehole and comment just to be a prick then sure, go ahead.

I do find it hilarious you say that yet some of your comments are pretty negative aswell so…pot calling the kettle

MetalGearsofWar928d ago

Do you suggest being impressed with everything a company does?

crazyCoconuts928d ago

It's a Positivity Contest!!
OK, boys, les' see those SMILES!! :-)

Obscure_Observer928d ago

Yes.

No Capcom, SE, T2, EA or Kadokawa

Looks like Sony doesn't have that ace upgrade their sleevs tô counter Xbox after all.

Tbf, I don't think this is the perfect opportunity for Sony to make any big acquistions with all the layoffs happening at Playstation Studios at the moment

Wintersun616928d ago

There is literally nothing to counter. Xbox can buy a golden egg laying goose and it will only lay silver eggs at best after that.

"all the layoffs"

Try harder troll.

Redemption-64928d ago

Seriously, you level of copium is getting depressing. Microsoft has laid off the most number of people. Hell the biggest came during the Activision acquisition, were they laid off 10K+ people. Don't recall you or your ilk say this isn't the right move for Xbox to laying off so many people.

I personally don't want any other publishers to be acquired, but if Sony was as desperate as Microsoft, they can buy Take 2, Square, Capcom, Sega or even EA. The best thing about MS/Activision acquisition is, regulators around the world would more than likely block any attempt by Microsoft to buy another large publisher

crazyCoconuts928d ago

I for one don't want to see more acquisitions regardless of what company. I don't want my world ruled by a few mega-corporations

Obscure_Observer928d ago

@Redemption-64

"Microsoft has laid off the most number of people."

Keyword: *Microsoft*, The vast majority of people laid off were Microsoft employees, not Xbox developers.

I heard a few people were laid off at 343i as well, but that´s it.

Playstation on the other hand, has been shutting down entire studios, cancelling games, while promoting a huge wave of layoffs across many first party studios and key people like Jim Ryan and Connie Booth. Bungie alone shrink a whooping 8% under Playstation in just one year.

Not a great look if you ask me, specially after the ABK deal.

"I personally don't want any other publishers to be acquired"

"I personally don't want any other publishers to be acquired, but if Sony was as desperate as Microsoft, they can buy Take 2, Square, Capcom, Sega or even EA."

I that was the case you would be jumping for joy. I doubt you would be here criticizing Sony for any publisher acquisition, let alone T2, SE, Capcom, SEGA or EA, which are the biggest.

You among others would be here making lame excuses on how Microsoft forced Sony´s hand by leaving them in a position they had no choice but to react.

Since this iSIZE acquisition sucks, you´ll say that Sony don´t need to react to Microsoft´s acquisitions.

It´s always a win win situation when comes to Sony, even when their situation doesn´t look good at all.

Wintersun616927d ago (Edited 927d ago )

@Trollscure_Trollerver

"It´s always a win win situation when comes to Sony, even when their situation doesn´t look good at all. "

Yes it's a very bad situation when Sony outsells Xbox 3:1 on consoles and sells through an astonishing 2,5 million copies of an actual game of the year contender in 24 hours. Can you imagine people wanting to actually pay for a game? Of course you can't, because you haven't played a game worth paying for since Halo 3.

Obscure_Observer927d ago

@Wintersun616

Sony is celebrating amazing selling numbers for PS5 consoles and yet people are getting fired, studios closing and games canceled. Now that Spider-Man 2 is out, you don´t even know what to expect from first party studios in 2024.YAY?

Those are the facts and facts don´t give a damn how you feel. (neither do I)

You celebrate sales, I´ll celebrate games!

To each their own.

Gamingsince1981927d ago

"You celebrate sales I'll celebrate games" yet you champion the console that gets the least games and the least rated games .......so weird

So can someone translate what this company Sony bought does?

928d ago
StarcrossedBits928d ago (Edited 928d ago )

Actually made an account so that I could answer this. The reason that Sony Interactive Entertainment bought them is because of their PlayStation streaming plans.

Videogame streaming is a video feed essentially. There's rapid x264 encoding that happens to compress the full feed to something that can stream over the internet. IIRC PS5 has a built in chip that handles the on-the-fly encoding. But as you can see from the streaming demands for 4k titles, the bitrate is still very high and you need strong internet to stream at high quality.

This company enables AI and machine learning to optimize the video feed on the fly to lower the bitrate, thus lowering the internet requirements to stream PS5 games from the cloud and theoretically, even for Remote Play.

This purchase was solely for the benefit of their streaming plans. iSize isn't going to magically make game streaming flawless, but it could make a big difference. Imagine being able to stream 4k/8k without needing to burn 15mbs-30mb/s. For folks with data caps, that is a game changer if the difference is big enough.

Edit - This also makes a big difference for streaming over cellular. You can do Remote Play over cellular data but it warns you against it, because the bandwidth and total data demands will blow through most people's data caps quickly. It is a very different story than streaming Netflix over cellular data. This company could theoretically enable PS5 streaming over cellular data, without it destroying your data cap or requiring 5G bandwidth.

Eonjay928d ago

Thanks for the explanation. Do you think this could be used for the new PSP? It weird because I think they won't pull the trigger because it will effect playstation sales but it appears the can pull the trigger if the wanted to.

SyntheticForm928d ago

Then I'm happy, as I find streaming to be one of the main areas SIE fall short.

Zenzuu928d ago

Literally in the article.

*iSIZE has a team of talented engineers and technical experts who have developed a suite of software solutions to optimize video. For example, the company built an AI-based perceptual preprocessing solution that allows conventional, third-party encoders to produce higher quality video at a significantly lower bitrate*

Knightofelemia927d ago

Yeah well not all of speak that much techno talk.

PhillyDonJawn928d ago (Edited 928d ago )

Monopoly. FTC CMA need to stop this

TheColbertinator928d ago

I am contacting my local congressman. The authorities will stop Sony's plan to monopolize the industry. Mark my words.

Charlieboy333928d ago

@ both of you above. MS buys up Bethesda and Activision with a huge number of developers and IP. Sony buys a small video streaming company. MONOPOLY!! You guys are truly idiots.

Barlos928d ago

Do you think maybe they were joking?

BeHunted928d ago

Sony keeps saying they dominate gaming subscriptions. It does sound like a monopoly.

Shane Kim928d ago

Guess maths aren't your strongest skills If you find an equivalent between this and Zenimax & AB.

Barlos928d ago

I mean if this carries on Sony will have bought the industry. I guess they're fed up of constantly playing second fiddle. PS5 sales pale in comparison to the mighty Series S. I think if this acquisition doesn't succeed, then Sony may exit the industry by 2027.

Outside_ofthe_Box928d ago

And once Sony is out the picture by 2027, Microsoft's uncontested dominance will allow them to acquire the career moment, Nintendo, under Xbox Game Studios umbrella to saves us all from the evil Google, Meta, and Amazon from ruining the industry! Thanks Microsoft and Phil!

MrBaskerville928d ago

If you read about Ps5 on Twitter you would come to the conclussion that they are doomed, despite hitting record sales numbers.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio19d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing19d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit19d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing19d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

But all of the great games have been made by humans

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.
