IMPRESSIVE!!! O.o

This video is a hard punch in the face of all Series S haters and lazy developers!

The most demanding current gen game to date runs GREAT on the Series S!

The Series X version has the superior performance over the PS5 version! The Series X on performance mode maintain consistent 60fps while the PS5 will run at the 50´s most of the time.

But we heard that the Series S was supposed to hold back the Series X version!

So how the Series X version is the superior port compared to the PS5? XD

Congrats Remedy! You guys did a remarkable work!

Jin_Sakai949d ago (Edited 949d ago )

“So how the Series X version is the superior port compared to the PS5? XD”

Now let’s have a look at the games that perform better on PS5.

• Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (PS5 boasts locked 1440p resolution in Performance Mode whereas Xbox Series X drops as low as 1188p)

• Battlefield 2042 (PS5 outperforms Xbox Series X with much more consistent frame rate)

•Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (In 120 FPS mode, the PS5 version sticks far closer to that target, with Xbox Series X dropping as many as ten frames more)

• Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 (PS5 version holds 120 FPS much more reliably than the Xbox Series X version)

• Call of the Sea (Improved resolution and framerate, better shadow quality and loading times)

• Control: Ultimate Edition (More stable frame rate in both graphics and performance modes)
DiRT 5 (Better filtering and texture detail in Image Quality Mode. Much higher level of detail in 120 FPS Mode)

• Far Cry 5 (60 FPS patch holds framerate much more reliably on PS5 than on Xbox Series X)

• Ghostrunner (120 FPS and RT modes both have much more consistent performance on PS5 compared to Xbox Series X)

• Ghostwire Tokyo (Xbox Series X version runs at lower framerate than PS5 version across all visual modes)

• Greedfall (Sticks much closer to 60 FPS on PS5 than on Xbox Series X)

• Gotham Knights (On latest patch, PS5 version runs consistently smoother than the Xbox Series X version)

• Hogwarts Legacy (PS5 version hits 60 FPS in performance mode much more reliably than Xbox Series X does)

• Immortals Fenyx Rising (PS5 has a locked 4K native resolution compared to the dynamic 4K seen on Xbox Series X in Resolution Mode)

• MLB The Show 21 (PS5 has a clear framerate advantage at the same resolution over Xbox Series X)

• Monster Hunter Rise (PS5 version outperforms the Xbox Series X version running at 120 FPS)

• NBA 2K21 (Xbox Series X version suffers minor performance dips when compared to PS5)

• Need For Speed Unbound (Holds 60 FPS much better than Xbox Series X)

• Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered (Xbox Series X framerate is nowhere near as consistent as PS5)

• Phoenix Point: Behemoth Edition (PS5 maintains 4K at 60 FPS, whereas Xbox Series X renders 4K at a maximum of 50 FPS)

• Resident Evil 4 (PS5 runs at 60 FPS more consistently in performance mode with ray tracing enabled than Xbox Series X)

• Scarlet Nexus (Sticks to 60 FPS more closely on PS5)

• Shadow of the Tomb Raider (Though resolution is slightly lower on PS5, the framerate sticks much closer to 60 FPS whereas Xbox Series X drops far more often)

• The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition (Runs at native 4K compared to dynamic 4K on Xbox Series X and loads almost twice as fast)

• The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition (Maintains 60 FPS much more consistently than Xbox Series X with 60 FPS mod applied)

• The Touryst (Supports 60 FPS at 8K – Xbox Series X runs 60 FPS at 6K and has poorer depth of field)

• The Witcher 3: Complete Edition (Has a longer draw distance than Xbox Series X version in both RT and performance modes)

• Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 (PS5 version has faster loading times than Xbox Series X version)

• Wreckfest (PS5 version maintains 60 frames per second without tearing compared to Xbox Series X version which drops frames and has tearing)

Obscure_Observer949d ago

None of those games are true current gen games!

Xbox Series S didn´t hold the Xbox Series X back on a true current gen game and that´s nothing but a fact!

There was nothing holding the PS5 version back and it still performs WORSE than the Series X version on the most demanding AAA game so far!

Just deal with it!

Shane Kim949d ago

Alan Wake is a linear game and still doesn't look as good as other games out there.

949d ago
bababrooks949d ago

Heading post is about Alan Wake 2 .........why the mumbo jumbo Jin ?????

Software_Lover949d ago

How many of those do you own?

I can never tell the difference between these comparisons. Unless one is on Ultra Quality and another is on low, most of you cannot either.

Just play the games people. It is not like the old days of sega/nintendo where you almost got an entirely different game. It's not like the days of xbox/ps2 where the xbox was just an obvious choice.

ModsDoBetter949d ago

Is this an article about Alan Wake 2 or did I misread?

Why are we now talking about other titles?

This happens every time one particular group gets a one up, the other group has to try and diminish it by citing other titles.

CrashMania949d ago

Don;t know why all the disagrees, SX may take this round but as you list there are many cases where PS5 performs better, or where it's very close, and it's not like it'll help sales on xbox either.

The fact of the matter is plenty of fanboys were downplaying the PS5 specs and trolling endlessly prior to release who have now been mostly quiet since because there's been no wide gulf in performance like they were claming. Nobody can proclaim the PS5 weak with gorgeous games like Demons Souls, Rift Apart, Burning Shores, SM2 and others.

343_Guilty_Spark949d ago

None of those look better than Alan Wake 2. You are such a cry baby 😭

Tedakin949d ago

You have a whole list just ready to paste? Wow.

Sonic1881949d ago (Edited 949d ago )

And to add to that, even Cyberpunk 2077 runs better on PS5 than the Series X. Let's not forget every PS5 exclusive (like Horizon and God of War) looks way better than Series S/X exclusives. Last but not least Larian Studios couldn't even release Balder Gate 3 on Series S/X on time due to the limitations and specs of the Series S

ironmonkey949d ago

damn thats alot. hopefully ms can get it together one day especially being the worst sales, worst ports, last place. things will pick up eventually. wouldnt surprise me a patch come out eventually putting ps5 performance back above xbox. ps5 kinda use to being better always.

Crows90949d ago

@obscure

If none of those games are "true " current gen games...doesn't that make it worse? Doesn't that even possibly suggest that they spent more time optimizing the Xbox version? Otherwise how do you explain less demanding games performing worse?

DivineHand125948d ago

That list of games is irrelevant to the current discussion. While I don't like how Obscure_Observer is using Alan Wake to take a shot at the PS5, the main point here is that we don't need to worry about the series s holding back current gen games. Devs just simply leave it with no performance mode. I expect the PS5 version to catch up in a future update and the frame time misses seem to be in some parts of the game not throughout from what I have red.

GamerRN948d ago

Control ran better on X, see Digital Foundry photo mode comparison

PrinceOfAnger948d ago (Edited 948d ago )

Now let’s have a look at the some of the games that perform better on SX

a plague tale requiem
Bright memory Infinite
The Quarry
Plus other 8 games
better on SX

Babadook7948d ago

Fortnite UE5 is better on ps5. And that’s an even better indicator of current gen than Alan Wake 2.

Spider-Man 2 and Burning Shores are both more demanding on current gen than Alan Wake 2.

949d ago
MrNinosan949d ago

@Kuklygamer
Okay? And Spider-Man 2 runs at 0fps on PC.
What's your point?

Or at a $500 PC, Alan Wake 2 runs at 5-10 fps, if at all.

goldwyncq949d ago (Edited 949d ago )

Objectively wrong. Alan Wake 2 at the highest PC settings would downright ruin consoles.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH949d ago

You are out of you mind if you think Spider Man is more demanding than Alan Wake 2…

PrinceOfAnger948d ago (Edited 948d ago )

"Digital Foundry"
Alan Wake 2 is the best looking game released so far this generation.

Alex said that in a video even john said its the best looking game this year.

So it will be like this in this year video
Alan wake 2
Phantom Liberty
Burning shores
Spider man 2

Giddy about <2 more TF to get you about 10 extra frames.

Behave yourself.

ForwardDude949d ago

Starting your comment with an all cap "impressive" says it all. Even you feel it's something out of the ordinary that a Series X game run better than a PS5 game.

As Jin Sakai is intelligently pointing, most games this gen run better on PS5. That's a fact.

No amount of chauvinism is going to change that. Nintendo and Sony released good games this month and they deserve congratulation too.

***This video is a hard punch in the face of all Series S haters and lazy developers! ***

Yeah, Larian Studios, such lazy developers.

Obscure_Observer948d ago

"Yeah, Larian Studios, such lazy developers."

Larian Studio is far from lazy, they had problems with split screen mode on the Series S yeah.

Still, BG3´s split mode on PS5 runs like crap and you can´t blame the Series S for it.

So, it´s gonna be really interesting if BG3 on Series X outperforms the PS5 version yet again, even with the Series S "holding the Series X back" the same way it did with Alan Wake 2.

We shall find out soon enough.

kayoss949d ago (Edited 949d ago )

Ladies and Gentlmen he have returned. But let me clarify something for our beloved Obscure_Observer since he's been gone for so long.

"This video is a hard punch in the face of all Series S haters and lazy developers!"
This game proved that the developers for the Series S have been lazy. So the Series S is capable of these performance, but the developers were too lazy or too incompetent to tap into its potentials.

"The most demanding current gen game to date runs GREAT on the Series S!"
It better be running great. Other developers have set the stepping stones for the Series S, they better not mess it up.

"he Series X version has the superior performance over the PS5 version! The Series X on performance mode maintain consistent 60fps while the PS5 will run at the 50´s most of the time.

But we heard that the Series S was supposed to hold back the Series X version!

So how the Series X version is the superior port compared to the PS5? XD"

Finally, it took them this long to optimize a game that the PS5 have already optimize. Its kind of hard to mess it up when someone else did most of the work.

Abear21949d ago

Yup, Series X should out perform as it is the most powerful console. It’s on the devs to take the time and optimize—too bad most devs don’t do this! I got a feeling many Xbox fans will enjoy Alan Wake 2 even more knowing it runs slightly better than another console. What that says about Xbox fans I’ll leave up to you to decide.

Cacabunga949d ago

How can the work be remarkable for the most powerful hardware to have a better performance? Why do you look so surprised?
What is surprising thing must be the opposite, when a very large number of PS5 games run much better than your box.

mkis007949d ago

12 tf vs 10 ... it should be the default. But it hasn't been. Ps5 performes above its weight class. It's thr reason why xbox series is going to have trouble pricing down versus ps5.

Vengeance1138949d ago

Hows that Baldur's Gate 3 split screen working out for ya on Series S? Oh wait... hahahahahahaahaha

TheEroica948d ago

So much Sony salt on these fries... Tasty!

maniacmayhem948d ago

It was all fun and games when a few kept on about Series S holding back this gen. But as you can see by the comments and disagrees a lot of people are in full damage control with bububu statements and personal attacks, which for some reason are not getting marked.

PhillyDonJawn948d ago

Of course, series X is the most powerful console. As long as the devs aren't lazy it'll always run the best

948d ago
948d ago
tagzskie948d ago

i know its cool to win a 6-10 fps with your prefered console, but lets not forget the issue of S. Baldurs gate 3, halo split screen? thats lazy developer? a highest rated game and a high change to win a goty and a 1st party studio? Xboys knows whats up more than developers i guess. A win is a win though ahahah

Sonic1881948d ago

All this will change once the PS5 Pro comes out next year 😂

Profchaos948d ago (Edited 948d ago )

Game still runs great on both systems not sure what your after here a golf clap maybe?

Also They stated it was compromised on series s

While Series S gets an intelligently compromised experience.

Copy and pasted statements

Series S is operating at or around 720p.
Series s lack of a 60fps option

So while the team has put out a quality xsx version and a very good Ps5 version the series s runs 720 30 and drops frames l ok ke the ps5 version

Also this is not a universal engine it's a in-house remedy game engine so there's optimisation work that has had to go into each SKU and it's likely we sell see more optimisation for all system via patches

This game doesn't represent console muscle it represents how a single engine runs better on xsx but but by huge amounts.

Kaze88948d ago

"Xbox Series S didn´t hold the Xbox Series X back on a true current gen game and that´s nothing but a fact!"

Then why did Thomas Puha from Remedy said in an interview that the Series S is a struggle to get to work properly. Yes it's not ruining the game or not be able to run on the S, but it really takes hard work to get it running due to it's lower memory and GPU power. Saying it's not an issue is just plain wrong. it's no wonder when memory heavy games like Baldurs Gate 3 had to drop coop.

shinoff2183947d ago

Lazy developers as if all developers have the same resources remedy has. Cmon dude

1nsomniac949d ago

Only issue I’m having with the ps5 version currently is the per pixel shimmering that they had with Control albeit to a lesser extent.

It’s far worse in Alan Wake 2. What’s strange is they put that issue down to the way ray path tracing works with Control but Alan Wake 2 has no ray tracing on PS5. Kind of wish I’d bought it on PC though, however I probably would have needed to buy a new graphics card along with it.

babadivad949d ago

I liked the shimmering on some textures on Control. Made the textures on her leather jacket really pop. Looks almost muted on my Series X. (Yes, I have this game on both systems).

--Onilink--949d ago

The shimmering is definitely because of FSR2, it just doesn’t work quite as well when starting from lower resolutions. I believe they also mentioned it in the PC review. Its quite the difference when compared to DLSS at the same settings (and obviously consoles will use FSR)

On PC the other setting that affected it(though it carries a bit hit to performance) was the post processing quality being either low or high (consoles matching the low setting), since it defines whether the post processing effects like depth of filed is done after upscale or before

SyntheticForm949d ago

You may be right, but the shimmering/sparkling/fuzziness has been a feature of Remedy's games since Quantum Break. It's been full force ever since, though I still dig Northlight and the look of their games.

1nsomniac948d ago

Control has it on PC with DLSS. Although it’s much worse on Alan wake 2 that maybe due to me playing on console though.

lelo2play949d ago (Edited 949d ago )

Unless developers are lazy or incompetent, a multiplat game will run better on the more powerful console.
Question should be, why don't all mutiplat games run better on the most powerful console? Incompetence, laziness or something else $$$...

Vits949d ago (Edited 949d ago )

Laziness, while games should in theory be fully scalable between all consoles given how close they are in hardware. There are differences between them and their APIs aren't shared. So if a game is first developed for the PS5 (which most are given the market share) then it has to be better adapted to take advantage of the Xbox Series X extra juicy. Otherwise, you just leave the extra power on the table and that is exactly what happens with the majority of multiplats.

Alan Wake is unique in that it was primarily developed for the PC platform and incorporated numerous features that are also present on the Xbox Series. However, these features had to be adapted for the PS5, and Remedy did an excellent job in this regard given how close in performance the PS version ended up being.

Christopher948d ago

Yes, one of the richest companies in the world that just spent almost five times more on a single publisher for their Xbox division than their competitor did on acquisitions in a year for the whole company is having trouble getting multiplatform games optimized for their console because that company worth 1/10 their own value is paying developers to not optimize for their competition. Sounds legit and logical and definitely an issue Microsoft couldn't make go away.

maniacmayhem948d ago

A lot more logical than the Series S being a potatoe and holding back this gen which was being celebrated constantly on this site.

Where was the rational then?

Christopher948d ago

Not at all more logical. You know why BG3 doesn't work on the S? Because it doesn't have the CPU to handle local co-op. Logical. And if it can't handle something that the X is capable of... then it is setting the lowest common denominator in that and is... holding back the potential for CPU use overall.

948d ago
Rocketisleague948d ago

As a developer(not game but webish stuff), you spend your time optimizing the part that will impact the most customers. If your customer base is mostly on PS5 why would you spend the time on XBOX. In a perfect world all platforms would get equal treatment. In a business world some platforms get completely ignored.

Christopher947d ago (Edited 947d ago )

***As a developer(not game but webish stuff), you spend your time optimizing the part that will impact the most customers.***

Yeah, you see, what you just said is "we prioritize sales over here rather than sales there" when both of those sales are potentially over 1m, which is crazy profit to leave unfinished. Let alone the fact that this completely flies in the face of the largest market for most games, the PC, which tends to get some of the worst ports of games today.

So, no, to all of that nonsense.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 947d ago
Lightning77948d ago

It's theorized the Series X could be utilizing its full RDNA 2 feature set.

Only way to know for sure is to look at future current gen only releases. Exclusive games always utilize the full feature sets of their respective platform. Such as SM2 SSD or forzas RT during gameplay.

crazyCoconuts948d ago

Unless someone here is a legitimate hard core game developer, we're all speculating.
I could just as easily speculate that, since Xbox implemented DirectX 12 and nearly all these games are developed on PC architecture, the Xbox should be the EASIEST platform to get working well, and the fact that it often runs better on PS5 is evidence that there's something in the hardware/API that is horribly unoptimized or inefficient, not that developers are lazy.
We can speculate all we want, we don't know why. But what we can say definitively is that despite Xbox's TFLOP number advantage, it has failed to demonstrate a consistent advantage over PS5.

jbrock11949d ago

Gonna be honest, the only person I've seen play the game on Xbox had a bunch of bugs. Either the game is poorly optimized for the Xbox or the Xbox is just not as good at running it, not sure but I had no bugs on the PS5 for what it's worth.

Chris12948d ago

Gonna be honest, I saw a Playstation troll make up a story to defend their precious console, so that makes it OK for the game to run like crap on my PS5, for what its worth.

Alan Wake 2's Upgraded PSSR Delivers A Vast Improvement

DF: "Alan Wake 2 is one of our games of the generation - a proper technical showcase - but with the arrival of Sony's upgraded PSSR upscaler, it's also a key proving ground for the capabilities of the revised technology. In its 60fps performance mode, the game's complex foliage, dense geometry and demanding lighting are paired with an internal 864p resolution, upscaled to 4K. It's a challenge that the original PSSR couldn't handle, sometimes comparing unfavourably with the original FSR2. However, the upgraded PSSR is a revelation by comparison."

I've already completed this game and everything else there is to do in it sadly, so I have no need to go back and enjoy the added enhancements that the new PSSR brings to this game. But I definitely want to go back and check out Control as I still haven't finished up all the DLC for that yet.

Ashunderfire8679d ago

O definitely do Control is a longer game than Alan Wake 2! Plus there is an Alan Wake tie in with Control, plus you face off against a scary boss! That guy was hard asf man.

Jesse Faden the main character, has so many upgrades to her movesets, and object of power gun. Playing this game now to prepare for Control Resonant.

It’s a terrible and boring game.
No way I will ever go back to it . I really do not like Remedy’s touch

Kornholic79d ago

Sadly? You mean you can't replay a game just for the fun of it?

Neonridr79d ago

I've played through the game numerous times. It was my favorite game of 2023. I have so many other games to play. Could I go back and play it for a few minutes to appreciate some extra clarity in the distance? Sure. Would I rather play a game I haven't finished or played yet and enjoy the PSSR updates brought to those titles instead? Yes.

isarai_lee78d ago

I mean im kinda with Neonridr on this, like when i game is so good you get everything you can out of it, a slightly shaper image is cool but not worth the hassle of install/update etc

andy8579d ago (Edited 79d ago )

It's mad they can take a 864p image and make it close to a 4K image. This tech is gonna do so much for console gaming

fr0sty79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

the crazier part is, sometimes enabling this kind of AI upscaling tech actually produces a BETTER image than natively rendering at 4K (and to be clear, I'm not talking about DLSS5's AI slop that takes creativity away from the game developers).

isarai_lee78d ago

That's just outright not true

andy8578d ago

Dunno why you're getting downvotes there is actually instances of this happening. Stellar Blade being one of them. DF reported the PSSR mode looks better than the native 4K mode. Im assuming its PSSR from 1440p or higher. So imagine with the 2.0 update

__y2jb79d ago

Strange that the other story on the frontpage with AI upscaling involved is receiving a hugely negative response in the comments but a Playstation AI upscaler story...well that's just great!

isarai_lee78d ago

No it's still bad, just not nearly as egregious, but there's definitely a sizeable (and growing) group of gamers who dislike any TAA/DLSS/AI upscale in general, myself included. Every time there's some update to one of these upscaling methods I roll my eyes because only when we improve from the issues can we address the issues, but when talking outside of an improvement or update suddenly there's no issues and we're The crazy ones for criticizing AI upscaling

andy8578d ago

That's because one is changing the art (characters faces) and one is making things look sharper. Isnt because it's PlayStation.

Such a weird post by them. Apparently they just mean the system wide toggle. Which is perfectly fine. This is based off a post they made after this post.

Eonjay84d ago

Not sure what's weird about that. The update being system wide is basically free marketing for any game using the tech. I assume they already have access to the update and are happy with the results.

mkis00784d ago

Its Just the wording, as they didnt have to do any work for it to be supported.

jznrpg84d ago

Why is it weird for a dev to let people know their game runs better now? If they didn’t mention it that would be weird

mkis00784d ago

I just mean they worded it like they did a custom thing...which they could do by tweaking base resolution if the upgraded pssr allows it with no image drawbacks. I'd be down for that.
