Xbox’s ‘Keystone’ Cloud Console Should be a Handheld

Shaz from GL writes: “Even though the leaked documentation show that a handheld may not be in the cards for Xbox, I think it’d be the perfect match for Game Pass.”

The thing is those already exist. You can buy a Logitech G-Cloud, Abxylute, Razer Edge, Retroid Pocket Flip, and Portal by Pimax (yes, Sony named their "handheld" the same as another handheld that is already on the market). And they will work exactly like we could expect this Microsoft streaming handheld to work. They also come in many different prices and are usable for more than just streaming.

I think it's easier to market an official Xbox console rather than an ROG Ally, Legion Go or Logitech G Cloud. These are Xbox handhelds in all but name. But people don't really know they exist. Theyre not gonna show up in an E3 showcase for example. They're limited in marketing.

Also there would probably be a way better UI/UX experience since they could edit Windows for it(which seems to be a thing they're interested in for 3rd party devices as well)

But other than that. Yeah if anyone wants an Xbox handheld. It already exists. You could even count the Steamdeck since you can put Windows on it and play Xbox games.

@darthv72

I said it's easier and that they're limited. Never implied that they don't market them at all.

Jeez reading comprehension on this website is a real problem.

Those are different segments though. A native handheld on the veins of an Ally or Steam Deck is a completely different beast than a streaming handheld this article mentions. And yes, I agree that for a native handheld, there would be a lot of things that Microsoft could do, the most basically being to make it an Xbox rather than a Windows machine which would give it a much more optimized experience very close to the Steam Deck UI, but without the issues that comes with Proton.

But when it comes down to streaming. Then Microsoft can't really do anything that different from Logitech, Razer, Pimax, etc. Already did. Because let's face it, for that segment the optimal way is an Arm-based device running Android and while I can see the angle of it being easier to sell an official Xbox handheld, would it really make sense for what they are trying to do with Gamepass?

The current idea when it comes to the streaming aspect of Game Pass is that Microsoft wants to infect as many devices as possible. So having an "optimal way" officially endorsed by Microsoft feels like going in the opposite direction and could potentially alienate those partnerships that they made with so many companies, from smartphone controllers all the way to TV manufacturers.

......... Why, when you can just use your smartphone? Cloud=doesn't matter how powerful your device is, their hardware does all the work, you just need good enough internet, which is still the problem Microsoft cant seem to understand. They think they can duplicate Xbox Live all over again getting people to jump from 56k to DSL. But when you live in countries that have crappy Internet and data caps are a thing, you can't win. DSL was more affordable in Xbox Lives day, cloud streaming games in today's world? Nope. Too much going against you, and with streaming services costs constantly rising and piracy come back into the game with a bigger impact, the world's not ready for streaming yet

Zeref965d ago (Edited 965d ago )

I think the lower barrier of entry is a huge benefit of cloud gaming(you don't need to buy a 300 dollar console). Also no downloading means being able to try games without committing hard-drive space which helps when you have data caps.

There are also places that have decent internet connections but don't have easy access to consoles or they're simply not popular. Like Brazil or China and most Asian countries really.

Yes some countries are left out (those with bad internet) but there's a lot of countries that are left out of consoles as well.

Keystone was cancelled so what is the point of this? Phil already said they couldn't get the streaming stick under their target price point so they cancelled it.

Xbox are so reactionary, they will even copy bad ideas.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing20d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit20d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing20d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
