Look at all the awesome tvs announced at this years CES....less than 1 inch thick plasma...240HZ LCDs with 120HZ LCDs the normal...1080p is now the standard in a HDTV....why would you not want to watch a movie in bluray if you have this kind of display tech.

There is nothing else that will show the full picture and sound on the current and upcomming tvs like bluray can.

Plus visio announced a $199 full feature bluray player with analog 7.1 bitstreaming audio out.

the Xbox 360 will never be able to do any of this...it is a deal format or platform for using on the best display hardware.

Netflix instant viewing is complete garbage. Unless you live under a rock and have you TV hooked up via antenna, the content is old and crusty. Cable and PC DVR easily beats it. New movie release on netflix yesterday, Art of War...LMAO..

The ps3 is "doomed" to be in third place. It's not going to die but it's also not going to ever take first or second place in the next gen race. So ultimately, the addition of bluray adding to the total cost of the console DID bring down the ps3.

I love movies. Since I went to Blu I can't for the life of me buy a regular ass dvd anymore. I wish I could. I'd save some money, but at the same time I look at it like this: Buy 2 disc Dark Knight for $22 or the Blu-Ray for $26? Believe me, maybe the best $4 I ever spent.

Bluray is supposedly under constant threat from digital downloads - discs on the way out, etc, etc... What I don't get is how that makes sense when digital downloads don't offer 1080p video?

The whole point of Bluray is 1080p - the extreme jump in quality and detail. That's the selling point. That's THE point.

I would have thought a more logical argument that digital downloads will be a competitor to regular DVD, since we're talking about equivalent image.

It's currently 100% infeasible to offer Bluray quality DD. Not only is there vastly inadequate infrastructure to support it (you could even argue that the current infrastructure could barely support SD DD en mass), but there's nowhere to store it either.

You're not missing a thing. Streaming 12gb movies on current available connection speeds is not a viable option in the US. It's going to be years before those connection speeds and storage for those size files become affordable for the average family. Not to mention it has to be convenient. Currently its just easier to purchase physical media. Blu-ray players and hdtv's are becoming more affordable, especially as an investment. If you figure you will use each for at least five years the investment is minimal.

Articles on here about a week or so ago kept saying that Blu Ray sales had risen by a lot.

I must admit I was very sceptical of Blu-Ray as a movie medium. I have a couple of older films remastered on to Blu-Ray and the quality isn't really there (such as Blad Runner Directors Cut).

I had also rented a few titles, and not really noticed a huge improvement.

However with the release of titles like Wall.E and Dark Knight - I have to say my mind has been changed. The detail and vividness of the production, and the audio quality is seriously impressive.

I've always been reluctant to pay the Blu-Ray premium price, but now any title that is packed full of special effects I buy on Blu-Ray.

If the price of Blu-Ray's keep dropping it will be picked up more and more. To me the only minor blocker to Blu-Ray is the high price compared to DVD. When an average consumer sees DVD players for £15.00 and films for £5.00-10.00 it's impressive that Blu-Ray is doing as well as it is!

I read the article and am disturbed that a TV will be jacked into the internet. Has anyone ever thought past the effects of convienance here? Hasn't cell phones, cable TV, and every other service based product taught people enough about how digital downloading will ruin ownership?

Quite simply, agreeing to "terms and conditions" is not my idea of ownership. I don't care if the button says "buy". Why? Regardless if they say you bought it, there is a server on the other end that holds the key. That key is Digital Rights Management. That key is also reliant upon the idea that the service will always be active. And how many PC games had servers shut down? Aliens vs. Predator? Forget it. I'll stick with the disc format, whether it be Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, or DVD. Convienance is just an illusion here and a short sighted one at that.

I learned my lesson recently when my alarm company won't replace the battery for my system yet wants to hold me to 3 years worth of payment because I refused to pay for a service that doesn't maintain it's own equipment. Why? It was in the terms and conditions. Let's see a 60 year old person climb on a ladder 10 feet high.

My cell phone company stole 10.00 remaining in my account because I didn't use my cell phone for 90 days. I'm sorry but terms and conditions, if read, can still change with or without notice to you. They can modify or delete the service altogether.

I have a 20 year game collection and a 10 year DVD collection. There is no extra convienance by downloading vs. stopping by the electronics department while shopping for food. Don't forget we still need to eat. How do you think I amassed such a collection? Really, the convienance of digital download is a joke. Hey, if you don't care about ownership then go ahead and have fun. Just don't pay purchase price thinking you're going to own it. Knowing this, I wouldn't pay more than the price of a rental. Nothing more. Otherwise, give me Blu-Ray so I can take care of it, like any responsible adult, and have the freedom to play it whenever I want. Freedom, to me, is the best form of convienance one could ever ask for..and in the end I'm the only one that has something to show for it.

The article was stupid and these arguments are just as stupid. BD isn't going to die off any time soon. It was one of the few products that performed well during this horrible economy. It's outpacing DVD on a day to day basis, It's hands down best video and audio quality ( stop with Download is better talk because anyone who has tried it knows it isn't up to snuff yet). Sorry to those who invested in HD-DVD or those who are unable to purchase a BD player but don't worry prices will drop soon and BD is going to be the only thing left on the shelves. END OF STORY.

The first time I watched one in 2007 right after I bought my TV i was instantly hooked. Yes its early in the Bluray life. Once players become 100-150 dollars and the discs drop to around 15-20 dollars(which are almost there). Also, you gotta have a 1080p TV to appreciate it. So, once all 3 of these pieces are in place it will take over. I'm expecting sometime this year.

BluRay to me was Ahead of it's Time but that Time is here Now.Sony took the Hard Way around this time but in the End they should Break even i Hope.

There's a ton of speculation in this article. It actually borders on rumor. I'm surprised that it was approved as news.

I don't believe that Blu-Ray is going to fail as a movie format. Right now it is still most appealing to videophiles, but DVD was exactly the same way when it hit the market. I remember buying my first DVD's for $30-$35 each, so in that regard things are exactly the same. I'll admit that at this point there really isn't a compelling reason for people to adopt Blu-Ray.

In terms of bringing the PS3 down with it, even if Blu-Ray fails as a movie format it is still viable as a proprietary format for PS3 games. So the success of PS3 isn't as reliant upon Blu-Ray as the success of Blu-Ray has been in regard to the PS3.

the ps3 (in my opinion) is the most attractive blu ray player, simply because it can also play games and go online.

if blu ray fails, the ps3 will lose some business.
