Devin Rardin: The console wars might be a crowd of fans whose passion turned normal business politics into an all-out war.

Both, when you have two or more businesses competing within the same market for a similar customer base there is always going to be competition to own market share and mindshare.

Sports Teams
Tech companies Apple / MS / Google-Alphabet / Facebook-Meta
AT&T vs Verizon vs T-Mobile
Car Industry

It’s just going to happen, there’s a limited number of consumers, and the goal is to get the consumers to invest into your brand, that’s just business / sales / and as a result reality.

It becomes a social construct due to preference and implicate bias. The issue is, with too much bias, tribalism takes place and common sense and logic go out the window as people begin to associate their being/identity with a brand and people devolve into an illogical mess, spending hours of their day in forums / YouTube comments / etc… campaigning/shilling for brands that don’t even know their names and wouldn’t attend their funeral.

darthv721063d ago

...and on a site like this, some take their biases WAY too seriously.

EvertonFC1063d ago

I think we're all guilty of that on occasion 🤭🤔

Minute Man 7211063d ago

So true.... some people look at sales numbers and that's "winning" to them but it should be looked at as the industry is growing and growth is good

jznrpg1063d ago (Edited 1063d ago )

Who is trying to grow the market and who is trying to shrink it buying publishers ?

If Ms was trying to grow the market and not kill it off and make it theirs I would actually buy an Xbox. And I did for 2 consoles but after Xbox One reveal their true intentions came out and it’s only become worse.

They are bad for gaming and that’s why I hate MS.

I love gaming and have been doing it for 40+ years and MS wants to come in and F it all up.

Marketing and advertising takes in billions from companies studying human behavior.

Ie companies use the natural human instinct to solidify consumers.

Microsoft leans into this heavily.
This is why gaming media exploded in 2005 when Microsoft made their push in 2005 with the 360.

People will buy products just purely off of defending against an ideal…
Or not buy products defending an ideal.
And this gets abused to the highest degree.

The further you push, the more you solidify.
So people on here can say what they want, blame whomever and point out flaws…
But at the end of the day, we are ALL sheep playing the farmers game.

I see so many saying “click bait” for ad revenue… and there will be an all out war in the comment sections..
And yes… people are baited.. but the ad revenue is just a perk.
The real target is traffic.
Traffic drives popularity per website searches.
This is why you see directed headlines that are a lot of times not what the article is saying…
More eyes see search results over what the results actually are.
This is called conditioning.
Microsoft’s favorite. Market conditioning.
Subliminal messaging.
Traffic.
Comment wars..

So they can drive a narrative and solidify consumers just off the pure natural human instinct to argue.

Remember… Microsoft rarely creates products.
They do not have a pull because of popular demand…
They have to create the appearance of.. “something”.

“Do not selll what the people want.. make the people buy what you are selling”.
Bill gates.

Bill gates literally wrote the book on marketing/advertising for the digital world.

You are right.., people will just fight… and people make a lot of money on that fact.

Redgehammer1063d ago (Edited 1063d ago )

The cola wars Ford versus Chevy versus Dodge, McDonald’s vs Burger King. People have been fighting those stupid “wars” because by and large, people and their tribalism perpetuate it, and at the end of the day, people just like a “fight”. I prefer a good debate, but I’m not above letting my distain towards a certain company leak out from time to time.

Regulators and judges are now in using the term. I guess it's that serious now. Before it was definitely a social construct.

Crows901063d ago

Absolutely...not much if a console war if you ask me.

isarai1064d ago

Just another word for competition, every industry has it.

IMissJimRyan1063d ago

Yes, but that's just the business side. Console wars refers to a social phenomenon too. Videogames are a product that a lot of people put a lot of sentiments on it. Most people identity themselves as gamers. It's only a few products have this effect. Almost anyone call themselves "fooders", "electriciters" or "watchers" even consuming those products.

When we talk about the social aspect of console wars we are talking about the central pillar of identity for some people. If playstation or Nintendo or other brand go bad, those people feel like they are going bad too. If you criticizing a company is like criticizing that person identity and personality. So console wars is about defending itself and the group you fell you are part of. It's more personal and deep.

isarai1063d ago

Every industry has it, Marvel vs DC, Disney vs DreamWorks, Milwaukee vs Makita, Ford vs Chevy, android vs iOS, etc etc

VenomUK1063d ago

@locomorales: “Yes, but that's just the business side. Console wars refers to a social phenomenon too. Videogames are a product that a lot of people put a lot of sentiments on it. Most people identity themselves as gamers. It's only a few products have this effect..”

An excellent description of the difference between competition and console war. 👍🏼

The console war / fierce fan loyalty is definitely exploited by some in the industry, I can think of one executive of gaming who and official Twitter account that has sometimes been used to do this.

staticall1063d ago

For some, reason to wake up in the morning, it looks like. /s

But that's happening with everything - what car manufacturer is the best, what programming language is the best, what phone brand is the top one, which state sucks and which doesn't, you name it. So every little thing (even the most minor one) to feed their superiority complex, to make other people know that my choice was the best of the best and your is wrong/sucks/you name it (even if you have to lie about it or ignore problems, or act like they don't matter).

ChasterMies1063d ago

The issue is settled. The console wars are not a social construct as Phil would like to believe. The war is real and Xbox lost. Microsoft put it in writing and submitted it to the court in the FTC hearing. “Xbox lost the console wars”. All these acquisitions are Microsoft’s way of getting the best terms for an armistice. Nintendo withdrew from the war altogether, and now lives entirely in handheld land.

crazyCoconuts1063d ago

You don't do the two biggest gaming acquisitions back to back as part of armistice. I think MS is very much going to battle.... With the biggest push anyone has ever made in gaming. Armistice would be going multiplat like Sega. MS is doubling down.

ChasterMies1063d ago

Without these transactions, I don’t think Microsoft would be in the console business.

Crows901063d ago

Slimiest push I'd say...it's not a big push in gaming since it doesn't grow anything or improve the medium.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio30d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing30d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit30d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing30d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
