Stop Announcing Games So Early

With the news that the new Perfect Dark game is still years away, Tam and Lucy discuss why announcing games early can do more harm than good, even though there are reasons why doing so is to a developer and publisher's benefit.

Either way the studio or console maker would get hounded. Show something early just to make gamers happy that they have games and get hounded cause its to long or dont show much cause there not ready or far off and get hounded. It's a lose lose

I’ve been saying this for a long looooong time, that and quit showing “conceptual footage” and then downgrading a game at release.

Xbox currently being criticised for this, Sony being criticised for not showing theirs early enough. Proof you can't win.

SullysCigar1052d ago

Agree, but Perfect Dark isn't the half of it, look at Elder Scrolls 6 FFS - teaser trailer, build hype, 5 years later tell everyone they have at least 5-7 more years to wait and that the game is in early development. That just stinks.

Just want to make a correction. Stop announcing games so early if you are Xbox. If you are Sony or Nintendo then it's ok if you do it

TheEnigma3131052d ago

Because sony and Nintendo actually deliver. MS releases basura

FinalFantasyFanatic1052d ago

Sony and Nintendo tend to announce games that release in a reasonable amount of time, but Nintendo also drops games on the day they announce them as well on occasion. That just leaves Xbox which....

I don't even own an XBox but HiFi Rush told me to tell you it says hi

@Amplitude,
That one's an outlier, and I'm pretty sure it was in development before Microsoft even bought studio Bethesda.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
