Starfield's Locked 30FPS Isn't The Problem - You Are

Bethesda announced that Starfield will be locked to 30 FPS on consoles. This has many players up in arms, but it’s not as big a deal as it sounds.

It's a matter of choice. No one is "right" here. You're allowed your opinion that it doesn't matter to you just as you are the opinion that it does.

RpgSama1082d ago

I think the issue is not having the choice, I'm sure there's a combination of resolution (1080p maybe or even lower) and frame rate that allows for 60fps, they just did not want to optimize for that

TheCaptainKuchiki1082d ago

I'm sure the game can be optimized to run at 1080p/45fps. They're just too lazy so they went with the "creative decision" excuse

343_Guilty_Spark1082d ago

It’s not that easy and DFs new breakdown indicates as much.

rlow11082d ago

Yes anyone can have an opinion, doesn’t mean their opinion is correct.

I would think it would be plain common sense, that the people making the game would know what’s best for it. Not a bunch of people that have no clue on the technical aspects of it.

The developer made a choice what’s best for their game. Get over it.

Christopher1082d ago (Edited 1082d ago )

***The developer made a choice***

Just FYI, this is the opinion. It's technically possible to do it either way. The opinion is on the choice of not doing it. The opinion isn't wrong because it's technically feasible either way and even developers have said that Bethesda made the choice and not that they know what's best. All levels of this are based on opinion, even with Bethesda.

Telling people to get over it is just you not caring about opinions, which you're allowed. But you being uncaring doesn't make your opinion any more valid than others.

BriBri1082d ago

Maybe they should force 30fps on PC then seeing as they clearly know best.

ApocalypseShadow1082d ago

You do know I'm going to remember this opinion and statement for the future right?

30 fps, 60 fps, etc, really doesn't matter to me as long as it's consistent. But if any Sony game in the future has any choices made by the developer, I'm going to pull this very statement that

"THE DEVELOPER MADE A CHOICE WHAT'S BEST FOR THEIR GAME."

Even though Sony's games run well, I don't want hear a peep out of the fans about anything. Including bugs, frame drops, lack of tray tracing, checkerboard 4K, service games, streaming, etc.

Developer's choice my man. Developer's choice. Can't wait to use your statement in the future.

Rude-ro1081d ago

@apocalypse
As if Sony fans did not get dragged through all that already since the 360 launched.

Literally everything you listed…
Guess by who? Xbox fans..
So if people are complaining, I would look at the culprits that did for two gens.
Maybe those fans that demanded 60fps over ingenuity, over graphics, over game engine advancements really meant they hate 30fps.

But yet you think Sony fans are doing all the complaining. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

fr0sty1081d ago (Edited 1081d ago )

The developer made a choice to not give the players the choice. Performance and quality modes, PS5 has been doing it for years...

EvertonFC1082d ago

I just don't understand why Phil just didn't say, a performance mode is in the works, were listening.
That's all he had to say, but no, it was "a creative decision" BS PR.
Wasn't gamers in general vocal in what they wanted this gen from the very start and both MS and Sony understood we wanted 30/60fps with options of Res/performance/40fps etc.
3 years into the gen and MS are gonna be releasing something without performance mode is just baffling imo.
What's hellblade 2 going to be 30fps? No performance mode ? Avowed etc.

Sniperwithacause1082d ago

That's one reason why I never could get into the Xbox brand. Always spinning words, and hiding behind PR BS like you said. #1 reason is because the controller just doesn't hit that comfort zone I need while playing long sessions. Anyway, I'm rambling. If their major games can't hit top specs from what the machine is capable of doing, then it will give you a glance at what some of the other games that will come from them will be limited to. Hey, but what do I know!? Only time will tell if MS can actually develop games that their machine was created for.

343_Guilty_Spark1082d ago

The game is Cpu bound. Dropping the resolution does not guarantee increased performance.

rlow11082d ago

Finally able to reply.

So as I understand what you wrote. Because the developer had choice, those who disagree with their decision are justified in sharing their opinion. Couldn’t agree more.

But that’s not entirely what I was going for. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But those opinions are weighted differently. For example, someone can disagree with the developers decision and even defend it. Vs the people (developers) who made the game and said this was the best option for now. Whose opinion are you going to take? It’s the same concept of armchair quarterbacks. Sure can anyone share their opinion? Yes. Obviously, theirs a big difference of standing on the sidelines or sitting in the armchair sharing your opinion. A whole another thing to be the one actually in the pocket throwing the ball. So the developers hold much more weight than some disappointed gamers.

In terms of caring about peoples opinions, sure I do. But when multiple articles on the same subject just keep on coming and the same people blaring their opinions multiple times in every article with all this doom and gloom. Am I supposed to keep on caring? Honestly, no. It’s like the boy who cried Wolf. Except some people on this specific articles are just trolling anyways.

Ultimately it comes down to those gamers excepting the developers decision and moving on, or not.

Regardless, the developers opinions and decisions hold way more weight because they’re the ones in the pocket.

Christopher1081d ago (Edited 1081d ago )

***Regardless, the developers opinions and decisions hold way more weight because they’re the ones in the pocket. ***

Disagree. Starfield will be played mostly on PC and that's your biggest market for high frame rate performance. It's important to know your audience and one thing PC gamers complain about are poor performing games for PC.

***blaring their opinions multiple times in every article with all this doom and gloom. Am I supposed to keep on caring?***

I mean, is that any better for us that disagree with the choice but are being told we're unreasonable and 60fps is just not possible when developers themselves say exactly what we do?

jjb19811081d ago (Edited 1081d ago )

I agree. Gamers are allowed to be upset or okay with it. People will keep telling me I'm wrong.

Btw, where's the guy telling everyone to refer to the DF breakdown?

senorfartcushion1081d ago

Not really if the option has to be programmed. If the game won’t play properly in 60 then the choice has been removed.

Christopher1081d ago

The opinion is on the choice Bethesda is making...

senorfartcushion1081d ago

They would have a 60fps mode if they were forced to do one.

Christopher1081d ago

That's the point, SenorFartCushion. That's the whole point. I'm not sure you understand that, though.

senorfartcushion1081d ago (Edited 1081d ago )

No studio needs should be forced to do anything unless it was chapter/mission select.

Also: stop sounding so dramatic; it’s just a videogame for god sake 🙄

Right. Blame the player, not the lazy developer and publisher who rushed an incomplete game.

Actually the writer is the problem. The bar should not be lowered when we are talking about a company that makes more money than a small nation. This kind of writing is anti-gamer.

Eonjay1082d ago

This. The messaging is kinda absurd. It wasn't okay when Gotham did it. Everyone expressed that and no one was chastised for wanting more. But Microsoft's PR overhead (aka their hordes of fan blogs and content creators) is so intense that they feel emboldened to tell us to shut the hell up when its a Microsoft game. They drunk their own Koolaid

Leeroyw1081d ago

This is screenrant. A very corrupted movie website that will take money for favours. And some of their politics are bonkers. They say it's our fault that people of colour movies fail when it's simply lazy writing and bad decisions.

Magog1082d ago

It won't be locked at 30 it will be capped at 30. Big difference. It's also a shooter from the gameplay shown. Expect that to feel muddy and awful at such a low Fps. 60 is a minimum these days if you are driving, flying, or shooting a gun.

The_Blue1082d ago

I'm waiting for the Starfield rerelease at 60fps. S/

Yui_Suzumiya1081d ago

Most games I play are below 30FPS and I don't have any issues.

isarai1082d ago

Lack of options is the problem. What is so hard about having a lower res mode for higher frame rate. This exact same argument and excuses were made for redfall, when are you guys going to learn to demand better and stop defending when MS clearly just gives you less so they can cut corners.

Andrew3361082d ago

So microsoft is making the game and decided to make it 30fps not 60?

IamFrasierCrane1082d ago

Yes, the Starfield IP is owned by MS. They 100% have the power to delay the game until it’s up to the standard of the console they created.

Chevalier1081d ago

"So microsoft is making the game and decided to make it 30fps not 60?"

Considering Spencer takes credit for the game referring to it as an achievement for Xbox/Microsoft games during the show then yeah. Can't just take the credit without the critism if that's how they refer to it now can they?

Gunstar751082d ago

You clearly aren't a Dev. Dropping the resolution had nothing to do with it. It's the CPU that is bottlenecked due to a design choice.

Do some research

BriBri1082d ago

As a dev, I call BS. I'll bet my job that the PC version can do 60fps with a similar spec at a lower resolution

Gunstar751082d ago

Maybe you should email Todd and let him in on your insight that nobody at Bethesda were able to work out lol

Rude-ro1081d ago (Edited 1081d ago )

Resolutions have major connections to cpu..
Distance, foliage, shading etc all heavily impacts cpu and dialing those back frees resources and can EASILY be done.
PCs have been doing that to games since day 1.

pitythefool1081d ago

Well Xbox guys said devs could just move the magic PC sliders to allow scaling for the series s.

Why can’t they just do that.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 1081d ago
Jin_Sakai1082d ago

Performance mode should be an option. Period.

The_Blue1082d ago (Edited 1082d ago )

What if that's just not the vision. Development shouldn't have to suffer from low end to high end. Everyone is so extremely cynically polarized.

Crows901082d ago

How is that not the vision if the PC version can do 60 fps?

IamFrasierCrane1082d ago

MS is already doing that with the Series S/Series X. The X version is suppose to represent higher end but for some reason the mark is being missed.

EvertonFC1082d ago

The vision this gen was gamers wanted the option to choose themselves res or performance, everyone but MS clearly didn't get the memo, cause Sony understood it cystal clear.

Christopher1082d ago

Are we talking frame rate here or the fact that Microsoft literally has two different consoles that developers have to account for?

PapaBop1081d ago

If the developer's vision is to lock their game to 30fps and not provide a 60 fps option in 2023, then their vision is flawed. Honestly I doubt it will effect my enjoyment much but options are good, many gamers now much prefer performance modes.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 1081d ago
Chevalier1081d ago

"Are we talking frame rate here or the fact that Microsoft literally has two different consoles that developers have to account for?"

It's Microsoft’s issue making those 2 consoles. If they've made that choice we should still hold them accountable for making sure the games run well. It doesn't matter if there's 2 consoles or 10 the system choice and choices made for their software all should fall squarely at their feet because regardless it's their products.

It’s not a requirement to buy games every month or whenever one is released. I don’t think people are going to spend $70+ on something they don’t care about.

GotGame81841d ago

I have talked about not being able to get into this game at launch. I still haven't given it another go, even though I think it looks great and has come a very long way since launch. Some people just want it to fail, even if it is a great game. I know why, we all do.

Starfield didn't just have the best sales for a week, but it was pre-ordered on PS store, with very nice numbers. I really need to start it again, on my PS5 though. So I can see how it is now. It has had some major updates.

I am looking forward to it all over again now.

Huey_My_D_Long41d ago

Its not that people want the game to fail. Its that Bethesda wont ever improve their games if you guys keep calling slop like starfield great games. Pure as that. Formulaic, chasing the trends, slop.

Like Bethesda has fallen off since FO4.

Ive a PC 4070, no interest in Starfield since the beginning since despite Bethesda owning some serious FPS legacy within their ranks...They just like seem to hate good shooting mechanics.

I dont see whats the appeal and thats ok. But how can you guys call it great? By what metric? The story? The Gameplay? The package all together? Hell I'm enjoying Crimson Desert, but I've got my issues with some design choices, but I do think the game is better as a whole than its individual parts. Is that the case for Starfield?
To be honest alot of you starfield stans dont make a great case for yourself, since I've never heard a starfield say what it is they enjoyed about it other just it being another Bethesda game that feels familiar yet new to them. Yall dont make the case on whats so great about starfield that keeps you coming back.
What does it do that makes it great that everyone like me is missing?

Like I wanted to like the Starfield, but after seeing its first trailer, it pretty much came out like I thought it was. Bethesda has been coasting off prestige for years now. and honestly starfield is proof of that.

CrimsonIdol40d ago

I'm fine with the game being janky Bethesda-core etc. For what it's worth it's more polished than previous games have been and the shooting mechanics are fine, feels pretty good even.

What I'm not fine with is it just being completely dull in every way. Even if they managed to resolve the structure of the game constantly sending you back and forth through maps and loading screens it's still going to be dull. The original The Outer Worlds did Fallout in space better, and that was hardly perfect (I haven't played the second one so I can't comment on that). At least The Outer Worlds had some interesting characters, enemies and locations. Starfield has none of that. They can argue that it's more grounded/going for realism or some nonsense (yet it's still doing Star Wars/Firefly style space travel) but it's fundamentally dull.

I dropped loads of money on a copy of this game at launch and I've no desire to get my money's worth out of it, I pretty quickly cut my losses and moved on. I don't know what happened to the writers for Bethesda, I presume they all moved on and have since been replaced by Jenny from accounting.

sweatyrich40d ago

I agree with @CrimsonIdol
I played the game to completed, but it's version of NG+ simply didn't appeal to me, so I never went back to it.
There's base-building, but it really serves no point, other than, there's base building. If you're into that, you have it, but I didn't touch it at all, as it wasn't part of the story ... At all.

The main character models are "ok", but the NPCs are just bad.

And IMO, people shouldn't be OK with a Bethesda game being janky. They're a big company, and should be jank-free by now!

MrBaskerville40d ago

I've given it another go and with the new more modular difficulty i managed to balance it a bit like Stalker 2 and it has been a lot more enjoyable this time around. The free roaming in space also helps a bit. Still prefer older Bethesda games, but it's growing on me
ever so slowly.

Jin_Sakai41d ago

Curious gamers. They’ll soon find out soon enough how trash it is.

Reaper22_41d ago

I dont think so. The games has been well received on PS5. Getting good scores too.

Jin_Sakai41d ago

Digital Foundry showed how bad the game runs even on PS5 Pro and crashes. It can’t even hold 60fps and not a looker to begin with. 🤷‍♂️

Grilla40d ago

I found out. I loved FO4 and wanted to judge Starfield for myself. I should have waited for a sale.

Putte41d ago

It's still as Bad as it was on Xbox. Of cause some playstation user's are curious and because there is a lot of them then the sales are gonna be somewhat okay for small time period. But still a very sad story what starfield turned out to be. Maybe the biggest disappointment in my gaming life.

Starfield: Free Lanes Trophy Guide & Roadmap

The Free Lanes update has arrived! Earn every Trophy in the DLC with the help of our Free Lanes Trophy Guide & Roadmap!

phongtro123_com41d ago

Solid, practical guide overall. The roadmap structure makes it easy to plan a clean run, especially by separating missables from cleanup. I also like that it flags potential grind points and suggests when to tackle them.

A couple of things that could make it even stronger:

Clarify any missable trophies/achievements more explicitly (and whether manual saves are recommended before certain choices).
Add estimated time for 100% completion and note difficulty settings if they affect progress.
Include brief build/loadout suggestions for tougher segments or challenges.
If applicable, call out any bugs or tracking issues in the update that players should watch for.

Overall, helpful for both newcomers and completionists, just needs a bit more detail in a few areas.
